Air pollution is a big problem for cities. Many people are dying from it. But how can we tell the air quality(质量) is good or bad?
Joris Lam has invented a birdhouse that can tell us about the air quality. On a tree next to a canal (运河) in Amsterdam, a small birdhouse will shine bright green when the air is clean. If you are standing near the birdhouse, it will also give you a free Wi-Fi connection. So Joris’s birdhouse is called TreeWifi. It can be put on a tree around your house to test the air quality. People can see a screen with information about local air quality and how to improve it. TreeWifi is a simple way for people to know about the air pollution around them. If the birdhouse doesn't shine, people will care more about the environment. It tells them to change their lifestyles. For example, to protect the air, they can ride bikes instead of driving cars.
Joris and his team are trying to make some changes to the birdhouse. In the future, the heat of its green light will be used to keep birds warm in winter.

Since the outbreak(爆发) of the pandemic(疫情), it has made its way around the world. It has a strong influence on our daily life. People have found a way to protect themselves by wearing face masks(口罩). We must wear masks anywhere in public. But the masks are onetime items. This means that we need to discard(去弃) them after one or two uses. The world has seen wasted masks strewn(散布在) all over the streets and filling up garbage bins(垃圾箱).
Experts have pointed out that the materials used in masks are difficult to degrade(降解). It will take at least 100 years for them to degrade naturally. Environmentalists become quite worried because a countless number of wasted masks have ended up in the sea! They are polluting the sea! The sea animals suffer(遭受) a lot and so do we humans. If the sea animals eat them by mistake, the rubbish will be hard to digest(消化) and stay in their stomachs forever. The bacteria on the masks may kill them too. They will not only largely influence the ecological balance(生态平衡) of the sea, but also can spread some more dangerous illnesses. People will also leave these harmful things in their own bodies and may become ill when eating these sea animals.
In general, the harm of wasted masks to the sea is serious, so we must take action to stop it in a proper way right now. We should leave them in a safe place and find a wise way to recycle them.

You may think that there is nothing you can do to help. That’s not true. There are many things you can do to reduce pollution and save energy.
Cars burn gasoline(汽油). This will produce a lot of CO2(二氧化碳) into the air. Some people believe that too much CO2 is making the earth warmer than ever. They think CO2 thins the clouds above us. The clouds keep us away from the strongest sunlight. So try to walk, ride a bike or take a bus. And if you drive a car, drive at a steady speed. This can save some gasoline.
The biggest energy use at home is for keeping warm or cool. So turn the air conditioner off when you don’t need to use it. Use lights that save energy.
Use fewer things that cannot be used again. When you buy something, consider those made from things that can be used again first.
A lot of water is needed for a shower. In one week an American family uses as much water for showers as a person drinks in three years! Buy a waterworks (供水系统) that uses less water, or take shorter showers. This can cut the use of water.
1. What will gasoline produce into the air?2. How can you save water according to the passage?
3. Do you think it necessary for us to save energy? Why or why not?

My brother David makes some predictions. Here are some of his ideas.
First, people will have less work to do.
People will spend most of their time playing sports and traveling. So people will become stronger and healthier, and they will live longer as well.
Second, computers will control (控制) the cars and people don’t need to drive. So there will be fewer and fewer traffic accidents (交通事故).
Planes will be very popular, and most people would like to take a plane for their trips. As for robots, they’ll be very popular with human beings. Every family will have a robot. Robots will do dangerous and heavy work for people.
Third, people will be able to live in the sea, on the moon or on other planets. The earth won’t be crowded or noisy any more. So there will be much space for people to plant trees. There will be less pollution.
Finally, water shortage (短缺) will become one of the most serious problems. If we don’t save water now, people will start wars for water in 100 years.

It’s the first time I write to you, my Children. I sent you many messages in the past, but you didn’t take them seriously. So I decide to write you a letter.
First, let me tell you more about our family. Dear humans, besides you, I have many other children. Some of them fly in the sky; some of them swim in the water; some live in ice-covered places; some run in the grasslands.
They might be very close to you, or even live in your house. But there are others that you may never have the chance to meet.
You bring them home to be your pets, friends and helpers. You put them in the zoos. You kill them for their meat and fur. And you even hunt them for fun. They bring you money and happiness, but they also bring you illness and death.
I hope you remember that wild animals are not your food, clothes or furniture. They are not killers, either. They are, in fact, your brothers and sisters. You should grow up together. I’m worried that one day you will be lonely if you keep killing them.
So, grow up, humans. Grow up to be more loving and caring. I hope you and all the wildlife can live happily in my arms.
Yours,
Mother Earth

Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem and affected (影响) the environment.
According to the United Nations, in 2020, people around the world produced 53.6 million tons of e-waste and only 17.4% of e-waste was collected and recycled. According to the report, in 2020, Asia generated the largest amount of e-waste, about 24.9 million tons, followed by the Americas (13.1 million tons) and Europe (12 million tons), while Africa and Oceania produced 2.9 million tons and 0.7 million tons.
It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine (城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals (有毒化学物质) can get into the earth or air. They will do harm to environment and affect people’s health.
To help reduce (减少) e-waste, we can buy longer lasting e-products. If you have unwanted e-products, find a new home for them. You can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs. For example, Xiaomi company now recycles people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones.

One way to clean the air is to build a new kind of clean car. That’s what several of the large car factories are trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Engineers are now working on it. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that can make people pleased.
To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, Americans have to make some changes in the way of their life. They have to cut down on the number of their cars and they are encouraged to travel and go to work by bike. But this change does not close down – many workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. And the problem of their pollution would become less important than that of losing jobs.
Americans may live a happy but sad life for a long time because of the car problem.

Ready to build a new space
Shortly after the Shenzhou ⅩⅢ crew returned to Earth in April, the door of Tiangong space station opened again! On June 5, it welcomed another three Chinese astronauts—Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe.
This is China’s Shenzhou ⅩⅣ mission, the ninth manned spaceflight for China. The astronauts will stay 400 kilometers above the Earth for six months. During the Shenzhou ⅩⅢ mission on Tiangong, astronauts tested many key technologies. This was to help the proper “working team” the Shenzhou ⅩⅣ crew, to complete the building of Tiangong. The crew have a busy schedule. They will work with ground controllers to connect the Wentian and Mengtian spacelabswith the Tianhe core module(核心舱). Wentian will be launched(发射)in July and Mengtian in October. Astronauts will use a robotic arm to move the labs to their final position.
The crew will also enter the two space labs for the first time. They will install equipment (安装仪器)and do scientific experiments. They will also do two to three spacewalks. We can also look forward to fun lectures given by the astronauts! When their mission is completed around the end of this year, the Tiangong space station will become fully operational. The crew will meet another three astronauts from the Shenzhou ⅩⅤ mission. The six astronauts will work together for five to 10 days inside Tiangong, before the Shenzhou ⅩⅣ crew fly back to Earth in December.
The Tiangong space station is expected to serve for up to 15 years, officials said, noting that it will also be open to foreign astronauts.
