Colorado has more fourteeners — mountain peaks (山峰) over 14,000 feet — than any other state in the US. Many people believe that Colorado’s 53 fourteeners are reachable by only the most experienced mountaineers. In fact, climbing those fourteeners is hardly an impossible task for most climbers.
Surprisingly, unlike climbing Denali (the highest point in North America), a climb to one of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks seldom takes more than a day. Pikes Peak is a well-known difficult climb, yet a college teacher in his middle seventies makes the climb every day in the summer. A friend of mine, Carson Black, in a day, once climbed four fourteeners. Three of them — Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, and Kit Carson Peak — are the most difficult in the state. Only a handful of climbs took more than a day.
Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks are also easy to climb because they often require no special climbing tools. The climb to Capitol Peak is probably the most difficult, yet most climbers who carry ropes don’t use them when they see the ridge ( 山 脊 ) is not very frightening. The highest peak in the state, Mt. Elbert, is so simple to climb that one man rode a 24-year-old bicycle to the peak last year.
Another sign that climbing Colorado’s highest peaks is not very difficult is the number of climbers each summer. After going down from Torreys Peak one weekend in August, I counted over seventy cars in the parking lot. On a weekend of another August, I passed fifty people in different stages (路段) of Mt. Elbert. Last year, 4,226 people climbed Longs Peak. Its parking lot today is about a quarter-mile long.
In a word, Colorado’s peaks are not hard to climb. Most of them take only a day to climb, require no more than simple climbing skills, and are topped by many people each year.

There are many springs in Jinan such as Fairy Spring, Black Tiger Spring, Agate Spring and Lute Spring. Fairy Spring’s name comes from a folk tale (民间传说). It was said that nine fairies (仙女) bathed in the spring and loved it so much that they were reluctant to leave. Black Tiger Spring makes big sound when water flows (流动) past the tiger-head-shaped stones.
Of all these springs in Jinan, Baotu Spring is the most famous spring. And it only takes people about 20 minutes to walk there from Qushuiting Street. Along the road, we can see people selling bigbowl tea for about 2 yuan a cup. We can also see people playing chess and chatting near the Baotu Spring Park.

Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation, however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西). It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, and chances for fun for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to grow crops but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance. However, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits(利益)of this natural resource.

Qomolangma is the third mountain of the Himalayas, so it is called the Third God Mountain in Tibetan language.
Qomolangma is very famous and it is higher than any other mountain in the world. Its newest height is 8, 848.86 meters, which was announced on December 8th, 2020. At the height of 8, 000 meters, there is only 30% O2 and the human body can only stand this height for a few days, so it is dangerous for humans to climb higher. But many climbers want to challenge themselves in the face of difficulties. As Alan Arnette, a mountain climber from America, said “Climbing mountains drives you to look deep inside yourself, and lets you find out whether you are healthy enough and strong enough in mind when you want to stop.”
It’s a good thing that Qomolangma gives people a chance to become strong-willed(意志坚强的) when trying to achieve their dreams. ▲ because many people leave their waste behind, such as water bottles and plastic bags. They cause the environmental pollution for Qomolangma. Many local farmers said their sheep and cows would die after eating the plastic bags and it was too difficult to clean them up. Luckily, many volunteers from all over the world came to Qomolangma to join in the clean-up activity. Which hand do you use when you write? About 8 to 15 percent of people are left-handed. They often have to use tools that are designed for right-handed people. So it is difficult for left handers to use most tools. If you are right-handed, try this experiment: Take a knife with your left hand and try cutting a potato into pieces. Don’t be surprised if you feel awkward(别扭的).
In the past, people thought it was strange to use the left hand. Young students looked down upon their left-handed classmates. Some children were even punished for using their left hands to write. But these days parents and teachers have accepted that. In almost every school in the world, left-handed students can use their left hands to write.
What causes people to be left-handed or right- handed? Experts have searched long and hard on this. They conclude that left-handed people are left handed for the same reason that right-handed people are right handed. One out of every ten people just is a lef-hander. It’s simply like the color of our eyes—some people have brown eyes, while some others have black eyes.
However, many researchers think that left-handers and right-handers are different in some aspects. Right-handers are more talkative and outgoing than left-handers. Many right-handed people understand spoken words better. For example, after they listen to directions to a supermarket, they can find it easily. Right-handers are good at organizing people, too. They are also better basketball guards. Just ask Yao Ming.
Research shows that left-handers are creative and artistic. Many famous performers, like Jim Carrey and Paul McCartney, are left handed, Many left-handers learn better visually(在视觉方面). In art, both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were left-handed. In music, Ludwig van Beethoven was left handed. In science, you find Newton and Einstein. The left-handed people are also really good at tennis and other single sports.
If you prefer one hand, but you are still good at writing with the other, you are mixed. Research shows mixed-handers can remember everyday things better than other people. What did you eat for lunch two weeks ago? If you’re mixed-handed, you can probably remember.
1. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A.Causes of being left handed. |
B.Encouragement to left-handers. |
C.Punishment for using the left hand. |
D.Changes in opinions on left-handers. |
A.learn better visually | B.are good organizers |

A.may be more talkative and outgoing |
B.are ordinary people like right-handers |
C.might remember everyday things better |

Let’s start with the map. This is a map of Port Prime. I downloaded it from the Internet. The big arrow(箭头) is pointing at our house. The house is at the end of Hampton Street. It’s the last house in the town. It’s a new house. A lot of the houses in Port Prime are very old but the houses in this part of the town are all very new.
My house is big. There’s a big living room, a big dining room, a big kitchen and a big bathroom downstairs. Then there are three en-suite bedrooms on the second floor. I think “en-suite” is a great word. It’s French. It means the bedrooms have their own bathroom. I’m sure French people never talk about en-suite bedrooms. It’s one of those things only English people say to show they are better than others. Anyway, there’s a third floor in our house, too. Mum and dad have their office up there. I don’t go to their office often.
If you look at the map, you can also see my school next to the park. My school’s called Port Prime Comprehensive or PPC for short. Then there’s the old part of town with the church, the town hall and the train station. There’s no cinema in Port Prime. There’s no youth clubs or youth centre. If you want to do anything then you have to go to Apsworth which is eight miles away. It’s easy to get bored in Port Prime. There’s nothing to do.

Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.
Many people say running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your body loses less water than in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from sports scientists at St. Mary’s University in London.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber”. The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions. Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners. “We’ve got a group of subjects into the environmental chamber, we’ve changed the conditions to recreate the summer or winter and we’ve got them to run a 10km under both of those conditions and taken various measurements(测量)on each runner while they’ve been completing their 10km.”
They found that the runners lost water by around 30.38% more in those hotter conditions. Besides, Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat is by sweating(出汗). He says the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin. “That heat builds up in the body and can be really damaging unless you can lose that heat. And it’s much harder to lose heat when the environment is warm as well.” And they found how they felt their perception of heat—was around a third lower when they were running in cold conditions. The body does not have to work as hard to pump blood to the skin’s surface.
Several websites note that the most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keeping as dry as possible is the most important when exercising in low temperatures. So, if you are a runner, don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
