3 . You’re never too young to start being charitable. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, just something as simple as a lemonade stand.
But sometimes even the smallest gestures can end up becoming a rather big deal. And one perfect example of this, is a neighborhood lemonade stand in Peoria, Illinois, which really took off.
It started out when a group of neighborhood kids in the Knolls neighborhood got together in order to participate in a fundraiser to help raise money for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The children got busy selling lemonade and other treats all throughout the weekend, and their hard work paid off. In total, they were able to make more than $3,500 for the good cause.
But this charitable lemonade stand isn’t in its first year. In fact, it has been several years in the making, all because of one mom’s actions. Suzanne Miller has been participating in charity races for the hospital for years, and because of her actions, her kids wanted to join in her fundraising. Hence the lemonade stand was started.
As Miller shared with the reporter, “The first year we did it we raised $220, and we thought that was amazing. Each year, it got bigger and bigger.”
But it’s not just the profits that have increased over the years, so have the volunteers. This year, Miller’s kids were joined by her neighbor Leslie Rothan’s three kids in running the lemonade stand.
Miller posted to Facebook, “The Lemonade Stand that our neighbors hosted this weekend raised $3,515 and donated it to the hospital. I can’t find the words to tell you how I feel. It’s absolutely incredible to celebrate this way.
Leslie Rothan added, “As a parent, it really makes you filled with joy. It was their idea, and obviously we wanted to support and encourage them to be as successful as possible, but it really helped them to realize what they were doing and how that money could really help save children.

Have you ever helped others as a volunteer? When students join volunteer activities, they learn to care for others. Many students in middle schools now do volunteer work. Wang Zhengxuan, a 13-year-old girl, and Sun Yiyang, a 14-year-old girl from Beijing, are among them.
Sending out love
On Aug 1, Wang visited old soldiers and read the poem Ode to China(《祖国颂》)for them. “I felt really happy when I saw the old soldiers’ smiles because it meant I could bring happiness to our country’s heroes,” said Wang.
Wang is not only helping on her own.
“I want more students to know although you're young, you can still help others,” said Wang.
Making it a habit
Sun has been a volunteer for nine years. She helped children in poor areas and planted trees to help Earth. “For me, volunteering is not a one-time thing.
In 2018, she gave books to kids in the poor areas of Yunnan Province. She also invited them to an art show in Beijing.
“In my nine years of volunteering, there are no big events, but only small actions. But I believe that the small things can still make the world better,” Sun said.

5 . I was in a shopping mall, so I decided to go and get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman, poorly dressed, sitting near the shop. I knew from the first sight that he needed help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was enjoying it. It was clear that he had a problem with his right eye. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then it happened — one of the most beautiful gestures I had ever seen in my life. There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. The next thing I knew was that the young man handed the waitress 20 dollars and requested a glass of juice as a favor. The waitress looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside, as well as the change from the 20 dollars. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe. Then there was a wonderful exchange between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I could take a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was considering this event later, I wondered why the young man didn’t perform this act of kindness himself. Maybe he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this old man as well.

6 . A friend invited us to help serve dinner at Tent City. A number of tents were put up for the homeless in the area.
I took my two boys with me who were nine and five at the time. They had a lot of questions because this whole thing challenged a number of their common ideas about how people lived in the world.
“Why don’t they have homes?”
“Why don’t they get food the way we do?”
We talked through the reasons why people end up in this type of situation and the importance of creating a safety net for them. I explained that often the only safety net is others who are luckier being willing to share some of their time, care and resources (资源).
The people we served ranged in age from the young to the aged. Many of them were missing teeth or had ripped (撕破的) and dirty clothes. To my surprise, they were specifically thankful I had brought the boys. Many said what fun it was to have active, joyful children around.
After dinner, I saw my nine-year-old son sitting together with several elderly gentlemen who were talking about sports in front of a small television set. He was having a great time sharing and hearing stories. As some of the old gentlemen returned to their tents, I heard him say to them, “Thanks so much for coming to dinner with us.” I could see through the expressions on their faces that his simple words touched them greatly. I hugged him a little tighter as we left to go home because it touched me too.
It reminds us that treating people with respect, no matter who they are, can lift all of us up.
