2 . Last summer I volunteered at a nursing home (疗养院) because I saw how lonely some of the old people there were.
I volunteered two days a week. I worked with Mr. Simpsons, and our job was to plan activities for the old people. I read them letters from their children and helped with special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day, and Clown Around Day. I also took the sick people for walks. We also had birthday parties and exercise days.
Through my volunteering I have made a new friend—Irene. She has family, but they live far away and cannot come to visit her often. She grew up in Shelton and lived in Milford before she came to the home. She has two sons who don’t often visit her. Her grandchildren, however, do visit her every weekend. Through our talks, I have found that like me, Irene was a cheerleader (拉拉队队员) in high school.
My volunteer experience showed me that I could bring happiness to the old people. Everyone will have to face having parents and grandparents growing older. Volunteering at the nursing home made me a stronger and more caring person.

3 . In 2015, seven college students in America started a project (项目) called Spokes. They planned to ride across the United States. Did they start the project for health reasons? No. They did this to get more kids interested in science. On their way, they would stop in small towns and hold classes for younger students. The trip began in Washington, D.C on June 1 and finished in California at the end of August. The Spokes team went to schools. They invited students from grades 6 to 12 to join their classes. Some of their lessons were about engineering (工程学). Others were about computer science. The students learned many interesting things from these classes, such as how to make model planes and robots. They liked the lessons so much. Spokes members were glad to see this. “We can’t teach them programming (编程) in a day,” Bent, a member of the Spokes team, said. “But we can get them excited about programming and show them science is cool. There is a river between a small village and the village school in a town of Hainan Province, but no bridge over the river there. Two teachers of the village school insist on carrying the children on their backs across the river to go to school. The 54-year-old teacher, Wang Wenzhou is also the headmaster of the village school. The other teacher, Wang Shengchao, is 45 years old. Both the two teachers have been doing this for many years day after day. The river is about twenty metres wide.
