1 . Let me tell you something very important: Never have water near you when you have something electric not far away! Last month, my family experienced a terrible thing.

My brother Tom had just received a new train set. We decided to build a little “world” for it with mountains, streetlights and even a lake. We found a large board that was big enough to hold the train. We spent over a week building the things with paper and cardboard.

When we finished all the things, we showed everyone our new train set. It was very wonderful. Now, it was time to turn it on. I flipped the switch and the train began to move. Everyone was excited.

I turned to look at Tom, and he looked strange. He was shaking. “Tom!” I shouted. He didn't move, looking straight ahead. Suddenly, my dad realized what was happening. He reached quickly for the switch and turned off the train.

The water had leaked(漏)from the bag under the board and arrived where Tom was standing. One of our wires had fallen under the table and was touching it. We sent Tom to the hospital. And luckily Tom was fine. He told us that when the electricity was on, he could not move at all!

2 . Last year, I was working on a book about penguins (企鹅), and I went on a trip to Antarctica. Antarctica is home to many penguins, so it's a perfect place to take photographs of them. A boat was taking a group of scientists there on a research trip, and there was space for me. I'm not a good sailor, but it was the easiest way to get there.

The night before we left, I couldn't sleep. What if there were storms while we were on the boat? What if I got seasick? I told myself that everything would be OK.

The day we left, the weather was beautiful. The ocean was peaceful, and the sky was blue. But it didn't stay that way for long!

Later that day, a huge storm came. Rain poured down, and the waves were twelve metres high. Our boat was wildly tossed (使上下摇晃). I was very afraid, and then I got seasick.

By the third day, the storm was over. We were in the middle of the ocean, hundreds of kilometres from home. Thick mist hung in the air, and everything was white. It was a strange and lonely sight.

Then we hit pack ice (大块浮冰). The boat had to push its way through the ice. I told myself that the ice meant we were getting close to the penguins.

Our boat was too long to sail to the mainland, so we changed to the Zodiac. The Zodiac didn't look very safe - it was the smallest boat I'd ever seen! But if I wanted to see those penguins, I didn't have any choice.

There were thousands and thousands of penguins. They covered the beach as far as I could see. I took dozens of (几十) photos - some of the best I've ever taken.

Now the book has been published and I'm already planning my next one. I just need to think of an interesting animal that lives a little closer to home.

4 . “Who are you?” Santiago heard a voice ask him in Spanish. “ How come you speak Spanish?” he asked. “Almost everyone here speaks Spanish.” the new arrival answered.

Santiago told him then that he needed to get to the Pyramids. “Do you have any ideas how to get there?” the new comer asked. “ To get there you have to cross the whole Sahara Desert.”

Santiago noticed that the owner of the bar stood nearby, listening carefully to their conversation. He felt uneasy at the man’s presence. But Santiago didn’t want to miss a chance of having a guide. So he continued his talk with the man and even showed his money to him when being asked if he had enough money.

The owner of the bar came over and the two men exchanged some words in Arabic, and the bar owner seemed angry.

“Let’s go out of here,” said the new arrival. “ He wants us to leave.”

Santiago got up to pay the bill, but the owner grabbed him and began to speak to him in an angry stream of words. 7 . Mr Klein told his class that a new student, Inez, would join them soon. He said that Inez was deaf. She “talked” with others by using sign language. Mr Klein knew sign language and he decided to teach it to his students so that they could also “talk” with Inez.

First, they learned to sign letters. Some letters were hard to remember. Other letters, like C, were easier because the shape of the hand was the same as the shape of the letter.

The next thing they learned was finger spelling. They signed one letter after another to spell a word. They started with two-letter words such as at and on, and then spelled longer words.

Finally, Mr Klein showed them that just one sign could be used for a whole word. To make the sign for the word “fine”, a person spreads out the five fingers on one hand, touches the thumb to the chest and moves the hand away from the chest. Signing is not just done with the hands. Expressions on the face are also important. The students also learned to sign a question mark by using expressions on the face.

When Inez first entered the classroom, she looked nervous. But the students signed, “ Good morning, Inez.” She gave the class a big smile and signed back, “ What a wonderful welcome!”

1. Why did Mr Klein teach his students sign language?
A.In order to make Inez nervous.
B.In order to make Inez feel warm and respected.
