1 . Today more and more children wear glasses before going to middle school, because they spend too much time watching TV or playing computer games without a rest. We must do something to protect (保护) our eyes because they are important to us.
Love our eyes. Every day, when we open our eyes, we can see our parents and friends, beautiful flowers and green trees. Without them, there is only darkness. It is like a house without any light. How important our eyes are!
Relax our eyes. First, stop to relax 30 minutes when using the computer for an hour or two. Next, remember to do eye exercises every day. Then, looking at green trees also helps a lot. In these ways, our eyes will feel relaxed.

A life-saving course can teach you how to help a person who has trouble in the water. What tools and methods should you use to save them and how to control your feelings when you’re around the water? These skills are usually taught in a swimming pool.
The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) provides courses in the UK. It has a program about water-safety for children aged between 8 and 12. It teaches things such as how to swim safely.
The RLSS wants everyone to know the water safety rules. These are to “stop and think” if the area has any danger. Always “stay together” with friends and family, and swim at a safe place.

7 . Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too. Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true.
People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race.
Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch. too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.

8 .
Welcome to Classic Reading. I’m your host, Jordon. While living in China for the past seven years, I’ve become interested in Chinese culture, especially classical Chinese poetry. I have also known some Chinese poets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and so on. Today, I will talk about a poem from the Tang Dynasty by the poet He Zhizhang. Here is an English version of the poem by Xu Yuanchong, a world-famous translator of ancient Chinese poems in both English and French. Let’s take a look at his translation.
Oh, I return to the homeland I left while young,
Thinner has grown my hair, though I speak the same tongue.
My children, whom I meet, do not know who am I.
“Where are you from, dear sir?” they ask with beaming eyes.
In this short poem, He Zhizhang tells a story about a visit to his birthplace. It’s been decades since the last time he was home, but he could still pick up his local accent. Things did not change much, but the people did. The poet had mixed feelings about it, so he wrote this poem.
Personally, I like this poem because it reminds me of my own hometown. No matter where I live or for how long I’ve left, my hometown and family will always have a special place in my heart. I hope you can enjoy this poem as much as I do. See you next time!

9 . Have you ever felt like you needed your own space? Sometimes we all need to be alone. Plants need to have their own space, too. You can walk away or shut your door when you want to be alone, but what can plants do? They can’t walk or run anywhere. They use allelopathy (植化相克).
All plants need water to grow, but in some dry places there isn’t much water, so the plants have to use allelopathy to keep on living. Also all plants want to have as much soil for their roots to grow in as possible, and one way to do this is to make other plants’ roots die by using allelopathy. Finally, all plants need sunlight to live. If other plants grow nearby, their shade means less sunlight, so the plants use allelopathy to stop other plants from growing too close to them.
Here’s an example — pine trees. Each year the needles (针叶) from pine trees fall to the ground. These needles that cover the ground have a kind of acid (酸) in them. The acid doesn’t hurt the pine trees, but it won’t let other plants grow.
1. If a plant wants to have its own space, it can ______.A.walk away | B.close its leaves | C.use allelopathy | D.cover the ground |

10 . Do you know that some people don’t do their reading tasks? It’s shocking, but it is true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are given in class. There are many reasons for this. They may be bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s why.
Reading makes your mind active. It is like exercise for-your brain. When people are old, their muscles (肌肉) begin to get weaker and their strength (力量) leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get older. Brain power declines with age. Reading helps your brain work better and prevent these declines.
Read everything that you can at school. Reading enlarges your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words. Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more intelligently (智慧地). It opens your mind. What’s boring about that?
Reading helps you become open to new ideas and perspectives (视角). Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a wider perspective on things. You can learn how people live in faraway places. You can learn about cultures different from your own. It can make your mind more knowledgeable.
Reading is good for your state of mind. Reading can lower your stress levels and help you relax. You can get away from your troubles for a moment when you read. So next time you get a reading task, take as much as you can from it. Squeeze (挤压) it for every drop of knowledge that it has.
