2 . ①Games and sports teach people a lot of useful skills, as well as helping them to keep healthy.
②Lots of people love team sports. They enjoy being a member of a team, so they have the chance to take part in the matches and events. They also enjoy sharing the success or failure (失败) with others. While playing, people have to support each other. The members can get courage from the team. If they can’t do that, they can never win. Team games also teach you that losing is not the end of the world. You will always have another chance and you will be more successful against your competitors next time.
③However, there are many people who just don’t like team sports. They have to find other ways to exercise. Perhaps they had a terrible experience with a kind of sport when they were younger. Maybe they feel embarrassed because they think they’re not very good at a sport. Team sports are usually about competitions, and for some people, this is too stressful. So individual activities are more suitable for them. For example, some people prefer jumping ropes in the park and many people enjoy exercising in their houses by following work-out (锻炼) videos posted online. Hundreds of free workouts are produced online every day, so you can have your own trainer without leaving your own house.

3 . Do you have trouble making decisions? Some decisions can make a difference in your whole life. To make a proper decision, you might need to consider many things. The following flowchart (流程图) can help you make better decisions.
Step 1: In our daily lives, some decisions may need to be made soon. For example, you are interested in playing the piano, and there will be a talent show next week. You should quickly decide what you will show. But most decisions won’t fall into this situation. Give yourself some time to really consider your choices carefully. Then write down the ones that work best for you. |
Step 2: Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each choice. Sometimes, you may find it hard to think of some disadvantages. Don’t worry. You can ask others for help. However, the decision is still yours to make. The result is up to you. |
Step 3: Once you’ve covered all aspects (方面) of your decision, stop thinking about it for a while. Later, when you look at your notes again, you may feel there are some points you need to change. That is OK. You shouldn’t rush to make important decisions. Think these points over, and then change those that are not good enough. |
You can carry out these steps to make any decision in your life, from choosing what subjects to study to finding out how to deal with problems with parents. Don’t worry about wasting time and energy to make decisions. In the end, the goal is always to make the choice that will help you the most.

4 . Many people have lost touch with others in their lives, whether they’re friends from high school or college they used to see. If they’re thinking about whether they should get back in contact with a friend, a new study suggests that the answer is; yes, they should.
Our friends appreciate an unexpected phone call, or a message more than we think, even if we are just saying a quick hello. In fact, they are very excited and enjoy it very much.
That’s according to researchers from the US, who also said that the more surprising the contact, the more it is appreciated.
They did a number of similar experiments with almost 6, 000 people. In one of them, half of the participants (参与者) were asked to think of a time when they had contacted a friend they hadn’t spoken to for some time. The other half had to think of a time when someone had gotten back in contact with them.
People in the first group were then asked to tell how much they thought the friend appreciated their messages—by text, phone or email. And the other group told how much they appreciated receiving the messages. The results showed that the people sending the messages underestimated (低估) how happy people were to receive them.
They found similar results in other experiments, such as when they asked participants to send notes or gifts to friends. And if the contact was surprising, it was even more welcome.
People are social beings and enjoy ________. So, our friends really would like to hear from us, the researchers said—more than we might think.

Binge-watching has something to do with a part of our brain that makes us feel good. When we start binge watching, our brain produces something that makes us feel pleasure. As we watch more and more episodes, it grows, so we feel great.
Writers and directors also try to get us to binge-watch. They design shows that keep people’s interest. Something exciting usually happens at the end of each episode. This is called a cliffhanger, and its purpose is to keep viewers wondering “What will happen next?” So, they keep watching.
Although binge-watching can be enjoyable, it may become an unhealthy habit. It keeps people from doing more productive activities. For example, instead of sitting in front of the TV, you could exercise, do housework, or study for exams. It may also cause problems for people the next day. Staying up late to finish a show means you get less sleep. So you perform poorly at work or school. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to stop this bad habit.
For starters, try to remind yourself to say “no” to the next episode. If you have trouble with it, then try to stop the shows in the middle when exciting things aren’t happening.

Setting personal goals can give your life a sense of direction. Before you set personal goals, think about what you want to achieve with your life. Try to set goals in some of the following ways:
Education—Will you achieve the educational goals after finishing high school? Are you still growing and learning?
Family—What kind of relationship do you want with your family members?

Jobs—What do you want to do when you grow up? What do you need to make your dream come true?
Health—Are you healthy enough to do the things you want to do?
Pleasure—How do you want to enjoy yourself?
To help achieve your goals, divide your goals into smaller tasks. For example, if you want to reach a main goal in five years, set a three-year goal, a one-year goal, a three-month goal and a one-month goal. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today. When a goal is achieved, take the time to enjoy your success. This helps you build the self-confidence.

7 . Do you know that some people don’t do their reading tasks? It’s shocking, but it is true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are given in class. There are many reasons for this. They may be bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s why.
Reading makes your mind active. It is like exercise for-your brain. When people are old, their muscles (肌肉) begin to get weaker and their strength (力量) leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get older. Brain power declines with age. Reading helps your brain work better and prevent these declines.
Read everything that you can at school. Reading enlarges your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words. Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more intelligently (智慧地). It opens your mind. What’s boring about that?
Reading helps you become open to new ideas and perspectives (视角). Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a wider perspective on things. You can learn how people live in faraway places. You can learn about cultures different from your own. It can make your mind more knowledgeable.
Reading is good for your state of mind. Reading can lower your stress levels and help you relax. You can get away from your troubles for a moment when you read. So next time you get a reading task, take as much as you can from it. Squeeze (挤压) it for every drop of knowledge that it has.

8 . People depend on plants. We use plants for food, cloth, and even the air we breathe (呼吸). Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen. Oxygen is part of the air we breathe. Plants are also part of the water cycle (循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air. Plants give us a lot of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables and crops come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges, or bananas!
Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well. When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help make less pollution (污染) because drivers don’t need to take your food to shops. You also help make less rubbish because you don’t need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the soil or off a plant and put it into a basket!
Trees are important plants. Trees give us wood to build homes and other things. Trees are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees give us fruits that are good for health. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.

10 . The way the mind works is heavily influenced by culture. Two people from different cultures can look at the same picture and see it in different ways. Culture also teaches people how to see and describe their experiences.
Asians think differently from Westerners because their culture teaches them to care more about society, family and historical background. Western culture, and especially American culture, probably pay more attention to personal success and independence (独立) of family.
Culture makes Eastern Asians more holistic (全面的). When trying to understand a situation, they like to see the whole picture. They trust feelings and pay attention to relationships because these are valued highly in their culture.
However, Westerners seem to be more analytic. When they try to understand something, Westerners usually prefer to think over small pieces of information first and build their knowledge piece by piece in order to understand the whole picture.
In one research, Japanese and Americans watched and reported what they saw underwater. Most of the Americans started by explaining the details (细节), for example, saying there were large fish in the front on the right. However, the Japanese talked about the environment first. For example, “There is a blue sea. The big fish swam past the green seaweed (海草).”
This research shows the traditional idea that Americans are less interested in social background and place importance on the individual. The Japanese, on the other hand, place more importance on social background.
