2 . Fire was discovered many thousands of years ago. The first time humans saw fire was probably when a tree was destroyed by lightning(闪电). Humans soon learned how to make fire. They probably made the first fire by rubbing (摩擦) two sticks together.

Fire was very important to humans. They needed to keep warm at night. They used fire to cook food. They used fire to keep enemies and wild animals away. In some parts of the world fire was used to send messages. The Indians in America, for example, used fire to make smoke(烟雾) as a message. In some other countries people lit fires to warn their friends of danger.

Fire was also used to give light. Before the invention of the oil lamp(灯), humans burned sticks to get light.

One man even used fire to tell the time. He invented a candle clock. He made a candle that took exactly twelve hours to burn. Then he marked this candle in twelve equal(相等的) parts. Tough(严格的) Japanese rules. Most schools ask that students wear uniforms, such as sports suits or skirts. But many Japanese schools even regulate (规定) the color of underwear (内衣)! They also ask the girls to fold their white socks in a certain way and the boys to shave (剃) their heads. 3.Other Japanese schools tell students that they may not hang out, go to the movies, leave home after sunset or play video games without permission (许可) from the school.

Different shoes in the US. For safety at some US schools, students must have a pair of indoor shoes to change at school every day. 4. This makes sure students won’t fall over on the slippery(湿滑的) floors and keeps the schools clean. Gum (口香糖) chewing is not allowed in many US school buildings, as it is difficult to clean the gum up. And if students chew gum in class, they may not focus on their study.

No strange hair in the UK. Strange hairstyles are not allowed in some British schools. But they might allow students to wear certain hairstyles during the World Cup years. If you look closely around your city, you might see hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han Dynasty. In a recently published report by online shopping platform Tmall, more than 2 million hanfu were sold in 2018. The number of hanfu buyers increased by 92% compared to 2017. The average(平均) age of the buyers is 21, with about 52% between 19 and 24 years old.

But why has this traditional clothing become popular among young Chinese people?

For some of them, it’s a costurne for relaxation. Li Ling, a 24-year-old college student, told CGTN that dressing in hanfu is a way for her to escape the troubles of real life. “Hanfu and modern clothing help me to show the different sides in me,” she explained.

Other young people like hanfu because there is a culture behind it. They regard it as a way to reconnect with traditions. Its wide sleeves, crossed collars and flowing robes bring people back to ancient times.

“What’s behind hanfu is the inheritance of the Chinese civilization(中华文明的传承),” Wang Peng, a 21-year-old costurne studio owner, told CGTN.

That’s probably why some fans have started to bring the traditional clothing abroad. Sohu reported about a Bilibili blogger(哔哩哔哩网站博主)who climbed Germany’s highest peak wearing hanfu this summer. She received praise from tourists.

“Many Chinese people are taking a liking for hanfu, as it makes them have a strong sense of national belonging.” Zhang Yiwu, a professor of Chinese literature at Peking University, told China Daily.

In 1882, a baby girl caught such a serious fever that she nearly died. The fever cut her off from the outside world, depriving(剥夺)her of sight and sound. That poor girl was Helen Keller.

Luckily Helen was not a girl who gave up easily. Soon she began to explore the world by using her other senses. She touched and smelled everything she came across. She also learnt to recognize people by feeling their faces or their clothes.

Just before her seventh birthday, the family hired a private tutor-Anne Sullivan. With the help of Anne, Helen soon learnt to read and write in Braille(盲文). She also learnt to read people’s lips by pressing her finger-tips against them and feeling the movement and vibrations(振动). She also learnt to speak, a major achievement for people who could not hear at all.

Helen proved to be a remarkable scholar, graduating with honors from Radcliff College in 1904. While she was still at college, she wrote The Story of My Life.

She toured the country, giving lecture after lecture. Many books were written about her and several plays and films were made about her life. Finally she became so famous that she was invited abroad and received many honors from foreign universities. In 1932 she became a vice-president of the Royal National Institute for the Blind in the United Kingdom.

You see people in movies celebrating a white Christmas in England or the United States. But Christmas in Australia is different.

The holiday, celebrated on Dec 25, comes at the hottest time of the year in Australia. The temperature is usually about 30°C in most cities and can even be over 40°C. There is certainly no white Christmas in Australia.

Because it is so hot, the tradition is to have a lunch outside and to swim in the pool or beach. Most people have a one-week holiday during this time, so they will travel to meet their family for Christmas lunch. Christmas lunch is usually a big meal of ham, turkey, salad and fresh seafood. (3) Family members all cook something different to bring to the big meal. I always enjoy Christmas lunch because there are lots of good cooks in the family. One year my aunt even made a delicious gingerbread house (姜饼屋) that we ate for dessert.

Children get presents from “Santa Claus” and are always excited to play with them. (4) It is a fun time to play or swim in the pool with the other members of your family.

The sport of cricket (板球) is very popular in Australia and another tradition is to play a game of cricket in your backyard. I always enjoyed playing with my uncle and cousins when I was growing up.

So Australia might not have a white Christmas. But it is still a very exciting and fun time of the year.
