1 .
Click: Hi, McCall. I saw you on TV this morning. In your weather report, you said it was going to rain. I looked out of my window, and it was sunny then. But on my way here, it started raining! How did you know it would rain?
McCall: That’s my job, Click. Every day I study weather maps and weather data (数据) about air temperature, wind, clouds, how dry the air feels, and more. That helps me understand what the weather will be like in the next hours, days, and weeks.
Click: You have to go on TV and tell people what is going to happen before it happens.
McCall: Yes. A meteorologist (气象学家) forecasts or predicts the weather.
Click: But why is it important to predict the weather? It will still rain whether you tell us ahead of time or not.
McCall: Weather is something that affects (影响) everyone. Snow, sun, wind, and rain can all change your plans.
Click: Oh, I get it. My neighbor might not drive his car far if he knows it’ll snow. Or I might plan a picnic if it’s warm and sunny.
McCall: Right. So I tell people what’s happening now, what will happen in the days ahead, and what to do if a big storm is on the way. Look, you can see how the weather is changing on this map.
Click: That’s not a map, McCall. That’s just a big green wall.
McCall: Look at that TV, Click.
Click: Whoa! On the TV, I see you in front of a map, but there isn’t really a map behind you.
McCall: TV meteorologists often work in front of a green screen. The camera takes all the green behind the meteorologist and puts pictures there in its place.
Click: Wait! Then how do you know where to point on the map when you are really just pointing at this blank (空白的) green screen?
McCall: I have a TV in front of me and one on each side. The TVs show me what I look like with my weather map behind me. I look at them to help me know where to point. It takes practice, but it’s a lot of fun.
Click: That’s amazing!
