2 . Everybody wants to succeed, but how can we be successful? We must keep working hard to achieve our goals and it always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps?
Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith (信念). We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra (额外的) baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself “I don’t want to make a fool of myself” or “I’d better be good at this”, you’ll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.
As a culture, we focus on results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove (证明) them to the whole world.
So, take those baby steps to reach the goals. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon (马拉松) of life.

3 . Have you ever been told a lie? Did you believe it and then tell someone else, without realizing it wasn’t true? Thanks to social media(媒体), this is happening more and more in today’s world. It is known as fake news. It became a big problem during the US presidential election(选举). People were posting untrue stories on the Internet about Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Thousands of people were sharing them, thinking they were true. People think it must be true if so many people have shared it. It isn’t just politics(政治) where it happens though. Shopping advertisements, celebrity gossip(名人流言), and even local news from your city can be fake news. Perhaps you or one of your friends has shared fake news in WeChat friend circle.
But how can you tell if it’s real or fake? Knowing about fake news can actually be very easy. First of all, “just because it’s on the Internet, it doesn’t make it true,” according to CNN’s AJ Willingham. He says there are different kinds of fake news. Some are designed by some websites. Some news has untrue titles or pictures. These things attract(吸引) people and make them click(点击) on the story.
Communications expert Melissa said that everyone should think carefully about what they read. Anyone can be fooled by fake news. “This doesn’t only happen to old people,” she told CNN, “Even the early education should be taught about communication, media and the Internet. Growing up with the Internet doesn’t necessarily mean you know it well.

Dear Aunt Aggie, I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded (无意间转发) the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad. How do I get Rena to forgive (原谅) me? What should I do? Joe |
Dear Joe, This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” And good luck! Aggie |

7 . As populations keep increasing in cities, city planners look under their feet for answers. With space in cities so limited, often the only choice for those who can afford to expand their property is to go underground.
One idea, which hasn’t been realized yet, is the ‘Earthscraper’ mentioned for Mexico City. This 65-storey inverted (倒置的) pyramid has been suggested as a way to provide office, shopping and living space without having to tear down the city’s historic buildings or break its 8-storey height requirement.
Many questions remain to be discussed, however, such as how you provide light, remove waste and protect people from fire or floods. Some of them have been answered with the construction (建设) of the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel in China. This 336-room resort was built into the rock face of an 88m-deep, disused quarry (采石场) .
The island city-state of Singapore is also exploring its underground choices. Not only are its Jurong Rock Caverns being turned into an underground storage facility (装备) for the nation’s oil reserves, but there are also plans to build an ‘Underground Science City’ for 4,200 scientists to carry out research.
In New York, the Lowline Project is turning a disused subway station into a park. Expected to open in 2021, it uses a system of above-ground light-collection dishes to provide enough light to grow plants, trees and grass.
