1 . Why do so many people around the world love Chinese cooking? In China, cooking is an art, just like music, dancing and painting. However, there is more than just one kind of Chinese food. Different areas in China have special ways of cooking because of the differences in weather and geography.
Traditional Chinese doctors think that we need a balance of yin food and yang food if we want to stay healthy. Maybe you should eat yin food like tofu while you are too stressed out or angry. Chinese people believe that people who have a balance diet should be healthier than those who only eat food that tastes good.
There is much more about Chinese food than just the taste. Behind many dishes are traditions with deep meanings. One tradition about Chinese food is to eat noodles on your birthday because noodles are considered as a symbol of long life in Chinese culture. Another traditional food, tangyuan, suggests that family will always stay together.
From north to south, east to west, people are sure to find some kind of Chinese food to suit their tastes and interests.

The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. It has one of the most terrible environments on the earth. It covers an area of about 600,000 square kilometers. This is nearly the whole size of the United States.
The huge desert spans (横跨) 11 countries. So it has many different land features (地貌特征). The most famous and beautiful one is the golden sand dune fields (沙丘地). Other land features include mountains, plateaus (高原) and so on. Some of the mountains have snow in winter. Thousands of years ago, the Sahara was not a desert at all. There were many plants and rivers. As the weather changed, it became hot and dry. Although the natural conditions are terrible, there are many plants and animals like snakes, foxes and birds living there. In some places, people grow fruit. Plants can grow there because their roots (根) can reach deep underground to get water.
More than 2,000,000 people live in the Sahara. Some of them move around from place to place with their camels. Others live in towns and cities. Camels are known as the “ships of the desert”. They can travel more than a week without water or food in the desert.
The desert is not always hot. The temperature changes a lot in a day in the Sahara. And the sunshine is strong there. So people have to prepare well if they plan to visit it.

When we returned to the house, I was very tired. The backpack was so heavy that I felt relaxed when I put it down. Yet my uncle’s backpack was half empty.
I wondered why there were so many stones in my backpack. Uncle Frank explained that he would put stones backpack whenever I was complaining and take out a stone when I said something positive.

Usually, at the end of each year, the names of the stolen books, as well as how many books were stolen, are written in a list and posted on a wall in the bookstores in order to remind the staff.
One day, one of the company's inspectors(检查员)noticed the list when he was conducting an inspection of the bookstores. He was inspired. After he went back to his office, he began listing the books that were stolen most frequently(频繁地).
In Frankfurt, a worldwide book fair(展销会)was held every year. At the fair, publishing houses(出版社)would use all the good words to promote their books. 8 . It was a perfect June day. My family and I decided to go whitewater rafting (急流泛舟). My father decided to bring us to go without a guide at this new, hard situation. Mom and I were upset by my dad’s decision, but my brother was pleased with it. Then we took a bus to the icy cold water. Having received the training, we began our own rafting.
Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to get us off the rocks. After about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river. It was coming out of the water about ten feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow, we ended up on top of this rock. Then water started rushing towards my brother. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back. Unfortunately, we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only get to my brother. My dad jumped onto the bank of the river to see where I was. At that moment I was picked up by a man in another raft. I kept crying. Thankfully, everyone was fine.
When we got back in our raft, we had only two paddles for four people. We all knew it was going to take long to get to the end. One of the guides for another raft told us that there was an earlier place we could get out, but we had to carry our raft and walked for a mile. At that point, no one really cared if we had to do anything after we got out of the water. We finally got to the ending point, wet and cold.
To this day, I have never felt so cold in my life. I have not been rafting again. All of this happened because my dad did not hire a guide.

A picture speaks a thousand words. And with over a thousand emoji pictures to express ours elves, who needs to speak or write anymore?
According to Professor Evans, emoji is the fastest-growing language — faster than any language in history. These little pictures started life in Japanese phones in the 1990s and they are popular now. In the UK they are becoming more popular than Internet words like “lol”(laughing out loud) and “muah” (the sound of a kiss). The most popular emoji is the “face with tears of joy ”. In New York’s Museumof Modern Art, we can see the first set of the 176 original (最早的) emojis.
Why do we love emojis so much? They allow us to have fun when expressing ourselves, to make people laugh and to be creative in how we use them. Some teenagers tell us emojis are quick and easy. “They’re quick to use and show hidden meanings. My favorite emoji is the ‘laughing face’,” said Will, a15-year-old student.
