8 . When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him doing lots of housework. But when he grew up, he was better than his childhood friends and lived a happier life.
This is the finding of a 40-year study which followed the lives of 456 children in London. “Children who worked at home in childhood got more abilities (能力) and came to feel they were important members of society,” said Daniel Brown, “And because they felt good about themselves, and others felt good about them.”
Brown’s study followed these children in great information. Interviews (采访) were done at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared the children’s mental-health scores (得分) with their childhood-activity scores. The children got more points for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and ability—the basis of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent (合格的) adults are those who know how to do this.
Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live great in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

10 . I grew up in the countryside. It helped me learn more practical skills than my peers (同龄人) who grew up in cities. I learned to cook at around 10 years old. The first skill I had was making dumplings. Later, I cooked fried dishes. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax myself. Now working from home, I cook every meal instead of ordering delivery (外卖). It saves money and I don’t have to wait for delivery drivers to feed me.
Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. Though it was hard work, the experience taught me things that many of my peers still don’t know. I once discussed these with my friends from the city. They thought it was a pity that they didn’t have the chance to learn these things in their lives.
Some might say we can learn these things from textbooks. But it can’t compare to the joy of watching plants grow. It brings a new way to look at the world. You will value everything on your plate.
This may be why I’m happy to hear that labour education is required (要求) in China. Students in primary and middle schools can have at least one class every week to learn basic household skills like cooking and cleaning. Trust me. These practical skills will help you for the rest of your life.
