One Sunday morning, I took my dog Ben to the park to have a walk. Reaching the end of one street, Ben pulled (拉) me into a garden (花园) with lots of colorful flowers. 4 . Cheng Feng is a teacher. Every summer holiday, Cheng pays home visits to rural (农村的) students of the Liling Primary School. The school is in the mountains more than 120 kilometers from Poyang County, Jiangxi Province.
Most students’ parents have to go to work far away from home. They have to leave their children behind. These children’s grandparents look after them at home. “Seeing these special families and special children, I understand the importance of rural education. It is also one of the important reasons why I often come here,”said Cheng.
After learning that one of her students, Tan Yeting, was living a hard life with her grandparents and her brother, Cheng paid regular (定期的) visits to Tan’s home. 8 . Taiwan’s most powerful earthquake in a quarter century rocked the island on Wednesday morning, killing at least nine people, injuring more than 900 and causing widespread (广泛的) damage. Over 50 people were reportedly trapped (受困的).
The magnitude (震级) 7.3 quake hit Taiwan’s east coast near Hualien at 7:58 am, causing more than 100 after shocks (余震) with magnitudes between 3.4 and 6.5.
“The shaking was strong and lasted for almost a minute,” a person living in Hualien told Beijing News. “It was impossible to stand still, and things kept falling off the shelves.”
Local officials have said that schools will not have classes and offices will be closed in Hualien. This is because a big earthquake made a 10-story (十层的) building fall down and some other buildings might fall over if they are not fixed soon.
Terrible damage has been reported in other parts of Taiwan. Tiles (瓦片) fell from older buildings as the earthquake shook Taipei, and schools made their students go to sports fields and provided them with yellow safety helmets (安全帽). More than 300,000 homes lost electricity during the earthquake, and over 80,000 still don’t have it even though repairs are being done.
Train services in Taiwan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Shanghai stopped for a while after the earthquake, but they are slowly starting again. After the earthquake, the China Railway Nanchang Group Co. (中国铁路南昌局集团公司) in Jiangxi took quick action. They started rescue (营救) plans and let passengers cancel (取消) tickets for free. In Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, train workers and helpers were helping passengers change tickets.

Gao Defu, 10, is a student in a primary school in a small village in Guizhou. He used to go hungry or have only an ear of corn for lunch at noon. But now, Gao and his classmates have better food and vegetable dishes for free every day, thanks to the free lunch program.
The program was started by Deng Fei, a journalist at the Phoenix Weekly (《凤凰周刊》). Early this year, Deng met Xiao Yu, a primary school teacher from Guizhou, and was told that students in Xiao’s school didn’t have lunch to eat. Instead, they drank water to make the feeling of hunger smaller.
According to this situation, Deng posted a message on his microblog (微博) saying he wanted to build a canteen (食堂) at Xiao’s school. The message soon got a lot of support and attention. In March, some 500 reporters, along with a dozen news organizations and charity funds (慈善基金), finally set up the free lunch program.
