How to Improve Your Reading Skills
When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important. But reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use them in sentences which are good examples of writing. Here is some advice on reading.
Try to read something that you can understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it means you still have a long way to go to improve your English.
Try to make your vocabulary（词汇量）larger. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them down in your notebook. But don’t write while you are reading. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read. After you have finished reading, come back to look them up in a dictionary and write them down in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
Read what you think is interesting. Choose a book or magazine about a theme that you like because you are going to spend time and money reading it. You can also read newspapers. There are always popular themes in them for you to choose.

3 . As an English learner, I used to translate（翻译）an English sentence into Chinese word by word when I wanted to recite it. Later, I found it not clever to learn English in this way. Take the sentence “How do you do?” for example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what’s your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.
Languages do not just have different sounds,and they are also different in many ways. It is important to master the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If words are put in a wrong order in the sentences, the listeners can’t understand the speakers’ sentences easily. Sometimes when the order of the words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence is changed, too. Let me give you an example.

For anyone experiencing the struggle of foreign language learning, here’s my way of learning Chinese.
Study abroad.
You can try to study abroad. It’s the laziest method because although my Chinese is so poor right now. Every day I’m still exposed (曝光的) to so much. It helps me keep good level of Chinese.
Find friends who don’t speak English.
Finding friends who don’t speak your mother tongue (母语) is the best way to improve. And this doesn’t even need to be local friends. I liked to hang out with Korean and Japanese friends because they were also learning Chinese. We were asked not to speak English but Chinese. In this way, my Chinese skills improved a lot.
Go to KTV.
Singing is such a great group activity, but it is terrible when you don’t know the songs. Ask your friends for a list of classic KTV songs and start learning your favourites. You’ll learn more grammar structures. For example, you can learn lots of romantic sounding phrases to express your love in Chinese songs.
Watch YouTube!
If you don’t have time for foreign language films or TV shows, find vlogs (视频博客) or even different kinds of shows by people who speak your desired language! I love watching vlogs in Chinese because it’s another way to get used to hearing real-life conversations. And it is a good way to learn new slangs (俚语) and phrases.
I think language learning is sometimes difficult, but try to keep it fun!
