It’s interesting to travel around the world. To make our trip more pleasant, we should learn about different customs in different countries.
Singapore
Stand on the left when you take an escalator (自动扶梯). Don’t chew gum here. Because people in Singapore hope to keep the country clean. Also, we can’t bring gum into Singapore.
Japan
Take off your shoes before you go into the Japanese home. Because they don’t want their floor to be very dirty. Put your chopsticks beside your bowl, not in your rice bowl.
America
We need to give tips (小费) to waiters in the restaurants and taxi drivers. Don’t ask questions like “How old are you?” or “How much do you make?” Because it’s not polite.
Spain
It’s a good idea to have a light meal in the afternoon if someone invites you for dinner. People in Spain have dinner very late, and restaurants do not generally open until 9: 00 pm.
England
Make sure to stand in a line and wait your turn. It’s important to respect (尊重) lines here. It’s a good idea to talk about the weather, which is a favorite topic of conversation with the British.

2 . Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
When you’re travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a present.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays he has to take out the rubbish. On weekends he has to help his father to wash the car. Sometimes he has to look after his little sister and brother. Mario is Jimmy’s foreign friend. He comes from Singapore. He doesn’t need to do any housework at home. Only girls help to do chores in Mario’s family. Mario’s sisters wash the clothes and clean the rooms. Mario’s mother cooks meals every day, and his sisters help their mother sometimes.
When Jimmy talks with Mario about chores, he feels very unlucky and sad.

6 . What’s in a name? What does your name say about you or where you’re from? While Chinese names have the family name before the given name, it’s quite different in other countries around the world. And Chinese names are often chosen based on (依据) meaning. Many common first names in the English language come from the Bible (《圣经》), even if the parents choosing the names aren’t religious (有宗教信仰的). The sound of the full name (first, middle and last) is an important part when choosing a name as well. The first name of a dead relative may be used a a first or middle name. Many English-language family names come from the names of different jobs, such as Baker, Fisher, Cook or Smith.
Other countries use only a single name! In Bali, Indonesia, children are named according to birth order and have no family name. Names are often unisex (不分性别的) which means they work for both boys and girls.
Traditionally, native Americans choose names based on nature and animals, such as Eagle Eye or Dancing Wind. A native American name can reflect his personality, his achievements or things that have happened to him. These names can change during his life. Family and society will give new names as a prize or as motivation (激励) to be a better person.
Wherever you’re from, names have meaning, and play an important part in our identity (身份) and what we grow up to become.

Brazilians are warm and friendly. They often stand close when talking and it is common for them to touch the person on the shoulder. People often greet each other (especially women) with light kisses.
Singaporeans shake hands when they meet and often also greet each other with a small, polite bow. Business cards should be offered and received with two hands.
The Swiss call each other by their last name. They are also respectful of private lives.
For example, asking about a lady’s age or how much they make a month is seen impolite. Being on time is required. Arrive at any meeting or event a few minutes early to be safe. They also have clear structure in their companies. Higher-ups make the final decisions, even if others might disagree.

After enjoying a nice meal in a restaurant, Vic left a $20 tip for the waiter. The bill (账单) was almost $200 and in Canada, it’s normal to leave a 15% tip. The waiter looked upset—he must have thought Vic was unhappy about his service. Actually, it’s common to leave a 10% tip in the UK. In the end, Neil quietly gave the waiter another $10.

These people were friendly and the food was wonderful, but all the time she didn’t hear music or see any dancing. After all, in Daniela’s country, a party isn’t a party if there’s no music or dancing. Daniela left early on that day. Probably it wasn’t very polite, but she just felt so out of place then.
