Two tickets. Only two tickets to the big basketball game. Three pairs of eyes all focused on the tickets in Dad’s hand. Marcus asked, “Only two tickets? But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you?” “Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go?” repeated Caleb. “Dad, can’t you get any more tickets?” I asked. “I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams offered the two tickets to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend,” Dad smiled and added, “I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves (应得) it most.”
The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen. “Where’s Dad?” he asked. “He and Mom went to the library,” Caleb answered. “And he said we should all get started on housework as soon as we finish breakfast,” I added. “Housework! He must be kidding,” Marcus said.
“I’m going for the preview (预告) of tonight’s game on the newspaper,” Marcus announced. “Wait for me!” Caleb rushed after his brother. I looked at the breakfast table in a mess. Well, I thought to myself, “It looks like Saturday morning housework starts right here.”
A few minutes later, as I was doing the housework, I heard the basketball bouncing (弹跳) off the driveway. I knocked on the window three times. The boys looked towards me. “Okay, we’re coming in to help. Just one more minute.”
I carried the rubbish bag out to the dustbin outside the back door. “You guys, Mom and dad will be back any minute,” I reminded them. I began to open the lid on the dustbin. Then a white envelope (信封) caught my attention. I noticed that someone had written the word “Congratulations!” on the front of the envelope and inside of it was the ticket!
That evening, a dad and his daughter cheered their team to victory. It was a long-remembered lesson about duty from a dad who let his kids make their own choices.

3. What were brothers doing when I was doing the housework?

AmyMonday 13th May 9:13 p.m.
We have been close for eight years. When I was a primary school student, she was the popular girl who was willing to make friends with me. Since then, a close friendship has grown between us. But last Saturday, she broke my heart.
We planned to see a film that afternoon. But in the morning, she posted a message saying she had a cold. When I called her, she said she might not be able to go to the cinema. “Don’t worry,” I said. “Get some rest. We can wait till you get better.”
Today, however, a classmate told me she had seen my friend chatting with another girl in a café on Saturday afternoon. How stupid I was! My friend’s “illness” was a complete lie!
I was so angry and I still don’t feel like replying to any of her messages. The stress of this situation is killing me, and I’m at a loss what to do next.

I’m so sorry! But this friendship is worth saving: eight years is a long time! Don’t be so quick to judge your friend. Perhaps she knows she’s wrong and wants to apologize (道歉), or maybe she will explain for her behavior. If so, you can choose to forgive (原谅) her. Anyway, find a chance to have a talk with her. Listen to what she has to say and tell her how you feel. I’m sure you can solve this problem together.

I truly understand how you feel. I also had a close friend. When I found out that I was tricked by him, I was really hurt and let go of our friendship. I know you value your friendship and want your friend to value it equally. However, if your friend doesn’t care about your feelings or makes you suffer (痛苦), it’s time to rethink your relationship. Talk to her and decide whether this friendship is still important to you. It’s sad to move on, but you have to accept that friends come and go in life.

The Internet has made sharing material easier than before. However, it has also been easier to commit a type of crime: copyright infringement (侵权). Copyright law is not well understood among most Internet users, so most copyright crimes are committed by accident. But breaking copyright law, even by mistake, can bring you a big fine or prison time. Therefore, it’s best to educate yourself quickly before you land yourself in hot water.
Copyright infringement is similar in many ways to plagiarism (剽窃), but they are not the same. Plagiarism is the act of copying someone else’s work and saying it’s your own. Copyright infringement is the use of someone else’s work such as copying it, changing it, publishing it, or performing it without getting their permission (允许) first.
Here’s an example: Let’s say I photograph a nice view. I put the image up on my personal website. You see it, like it, copy it, and use it on your own website without asking my permission. You are breaking copyright law. This is also the case if you download music or video files from the Internet without paying for their use, or if you create a video using unlicensed (未授权的) music clips.
▲ In most countries, it lasts for the life of the creator, plus another 70 years. After that, the public can have the right to use it.
If you want to use a piece of work but aren’t sure whether it’s under copyright or not, look for the ©symbol or the phrases “all rights reserved”. If you see these, you need the creators’ permission to use their work. And when things aren’t so clear, it’s always better to ask the creators.

9 . There are two types of questions that we can ask to improve our reading skills.
The first type of question helps us check our understanding of the text. This includes the 5W+1H questions (what, where, when, who, why, and how), as well as yes-no questions. Only one correct answer exists for this type of question.
The second type makes us think more deeply about the text. For example, these questions might ask about the author’s intention, the reader’s opinions, or how the text relates to life. These questions are typically broader (更宽泛), harder to answer, and have kinds of correct answers.
So, how do you ask questions to improve your reading skills?
Begin by looking at the article’s title and the illustrations (配图). Based on these, ask yourself what the text might be about.
As you read, pose the 5W+1H questions and try to answer them. Note any question you’re unable to answer. Decide whether you need to reread a passage or move forward in your reading in order to answer those questions.
After reading, ask yourself questions that connect ideas in the article to the real world and to your personal experience.
1. The main purpose of the passage above is ________.A.to encourage you to read more books |
