文章大意:本文主要介绍了中国的大熊猫有两种类型。

3 . ①China`s giant pandas are one of the most popular animals in the world. Many people love their cute look. But do you know that China in fact has two different kinds of giant pandas?

②Before the 1960s, many people believed that giant pandas only lived in the mountains in Sichuan. But in the 1960s, an expert found that there were also wild pandas living in the Qinling mountains in Shaanxi. The two groups of giant pandas are not just from different places, but are two subspecies (亚种) of giant pandas. They are different in many ways.

③Research shows that the pandas from Sichuan have bigger and longer heads. They are more similar to bears (熊) in their look. Those from Shaanxi have rounder heads with shorter noses. They look more like cats. While the Sichuan pandas’ coat (皮毛) is black and white, the Shaanxi ones can have dark brown hair.

④Qizai, the world`s only brown-and-white panda in captivity (圈养), lives in Shaanxi Province now. People found him in the Qinling mountains when he was just two months old. 文章大意:本文是卡罗尔就自己的问题向亚历克斯提问,以及亚历克斯给他的解释和建议。

4 .

Dear Alex,

I found that the English we learn in our classes is sometimes not idiomatic (地道的) in real life. What can we do to change the situation?

Carol

Hi Carol,

Having lived in China for some time, I’ve definitely (肯定地) come across some words that Chinese English speakers use, but aren’t used by native speakers (说母语的人) that often. One example is the word “seldom (很少)”. Although most native English speakers know the meaning of the word, it isn’t really used in spoken English. We are more likely to (可能) say “rarely” or “don`t really”. I think you have to accept that this is a constant (经常的) feature of language learning. When I study Chinese, one of the first phrases I am taught is “ni hao ma (你好吗)”, which isn’t really used naturally in China.

In my experience, I think the Chinese education system (体系) does quite a good job at teaching English, so definitely keep paying attention in class and don’t dismiss (摒除) what you are being taught. However, my advice would be to watch TV shows and movies as well as read books to get a good feel for the language. Try to think about the different ways of writing and speaking in different situations, especially the different words that are being used.

Alex

7 . In 2021, some white rhinos (犀牛) in South Africa were moved to their new home, a national park in Rwanda (卢旺达). One of the organizers of the project, Jes Gruner of African Parks said, “This project is the first of its kind with so many animals from wild to wild.”

Rhinos are in great danger across Africa. Though they don’t have any natural enemies (敌人), their number has been cut down to a dangerously low level (水平) because of the hunters (狩猎者).

Those rhinos are southern white rhinos, and there are only about 18,000 of them left in South Africa. They are not native (本地的) to Rwanda. But researchers hope that by giving them a new protected area to live in, they can help increase (提升) their numbers.

Moving rhinos isn’t easy. Males weigh 5,070 pounds while (然而) females weigh about3,750 pounds on average (平均). They are also very powerful and can be dangerous to be around sometimes.

To move the rhinos, the organizers used a huge 747 airplane. It’s been a huge task (任务). It had taken them three years to prepare for the project. They hope that the number of southern white rhinos will go up quickly in this protected area. They believe that in the future the number of white rhinos in the park could grow to as many as 1,000 or even 1,500.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了撒哈拉沙漠过去的气候条件。

9 . Have you been to the Sahara? It is a dry world with less than 100 mm rainfall every year. However, there is a lifeline through it in the areas west of the Nile in Egypt. In fact, the areas were wetter in the past according to a new study.

Savino di Lernia, a professor at the Sapienza University of Rome, studied the fossils (化石) on a 140-square-meter rock in the Sahara Desert. In fossils between 10,200 and 8,000 years old, around 90% were fish bones. This shows the rock was close to a large lake.

The environment at that time was a good fit for humans. The Sahara even held large animals like elephants until about 5,500 years ago. It began to dry out around 7,400 years ago. In fossils between 5,900 and 4,650 years old, fish bones only made up about 48%.
