4 . Do you know that Chinese people had more than one name in ancient (古代的) times?

In ancient China, people’s names had three parts, their family name, given name and courtesy name. For example, the famous poet Li Bai’s family name Li came from his father’s name. His given name was Bai, and his courtesy name was Taibai.

People used their given names when they were among family members. But in social life, they called each other by their courtesy names to show respect. This was most done among people of similar age. If your elders were talking about you, the given name would be used instead of the courtesy name.

Men would get their courtesy names when they turned 20 years old. It was a symbol of being an adult. While women would get their courtesy names after getting married.

One’s courtesy name often had something to do with one’s given name. For example, Zhuge Liang’s given name was Liang, which means “bright”. His courtesy name was Kongming.

6 . How to Have a Meaningful Vacation

7 . Ask any student which subject he or she hates most 9 out of 10 will answer “Maths”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn Biology, Chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn Maths. Why so many students hate Maths and yet cannot avoid learning it at school?

Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks “What good do we get from learning Maths?” We can use computers to calculate (计算) numbers and we can use computers to store information. I think learning Maths at school is a waste of time.

However, there is much more to Maths than just learning to add numbers. In fact, Maths is not so much about calculation because it is about learning to think logically (逻辑地) and working out problems. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but if we can’t think logically, how could we know how to use the computer? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems.

For example, imagine you are a cook and must prepare dinner for 100 people. How should you divide your resources so that you can get the job done fastest and best? To think logically will help you work out your problems in a better way.

Long ago, there lived a group of pigeons (鸽子) in the forest. Among them was a wise old pigeon. Every pigeon looked up to the wise old pigeon

One day, while searching for food, they saw rice spread on the ground. All pigeons, at once decided to fly down and eat the rice. But the wise pigeon thought, “How could so much rice be found in this thick forest?”

He tried to stop all other pigeons but he failed.

When all pigeons finished eating the rice and tried to fly back, they were unable to move their feet as they got stuck in a net. Soon, bird catcher saw pigeons trapped (陷入困境). He shouted, “Ah! So many pigeons I will put them in cages and sell them in the market. ”

Nothing could help pigeons to get free from the net.

They all cried, “What should we do now?” They looked at the wise old pigeon and said, “Please save us” The wise pigeon advised, “Stop pulling the net in your own direction (方向). Instead, try to fly up together and carry the net with you.” All pigeons listened to him and started to pull together and in no time started to fly away together

Then the wise old pigeon said, “Unity (团结一致) has great strength to protect you from harm. It’s your act of unity that saved your lives today.”
