3 . There are two types of questions that we can ask to improve our reading skills.
The first type of question helps us check our understanding of the text. This includes the 5W+1H questions (what, where, when, who, why, and how), as well as yes-no questions. Only one correct answer exists for this type of question.
The second type makes us think more deeply about the text. For example, these questions might ask about the author’s intention, the reader’s opinions, or how the text relates to life. These questions are typically broader (更宽泛), harder to answer, and have kinds of correct answers.
So, how do you ask questions to improve your reading skills?
Begin by looking at the article’s title and the illustrations (配图). Based on these, ask yourself what the text might be about.
As you read, pose the 5W+1H questions and try to answer them. Note any question you’re unable to answer. Decide whether you need to reread a passage or move forward in your reading in order to answer those questions.
After reading, ask yourself questions that connect ideas in the article to the real world and to your personal experience.

6 . How did your final exams go?
Here, I’m going to share with you some tips for taking good notes.
● It’s great if your teacher writes notes on the board: You can copy them down. If not, however, write down the most important points from class.
● It can take time to learn how to listen for the main ideas, so keep trying and don’t give up. Some teachers may directly tell you that a particular fact is important. Some might just repeat a certain piece of information. That’s a clue that it’s very important.
● Don’t go crazy taking notes, though. If you spend too much time getting your notes right, you might miss what the teacher is saying. But if you think you have missed something important, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat it. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you have got the notes right as you study.
● If you’ve written down notes carelessly in class, you might not be able to read them when it’s time to prepare for a test. Look over your notes when you get home and copy them if it is necessary.
● Finally, it’s a great idea to go over your notes with a friend and compare what the two of you have put down. It can remind (提醒) you and your friend to any mistakes you may have made in your notes.
Think over these tips and try to improve your note-taking habits. Good note-taking helps your mind take in the material it needs to learn—and mostly, your test performance is decided by how effectively (有效地) you have taken your class notes.

9 . Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.
But something was different. Something had changed.
Home
“So, do you want to hear about the bad part or the good part first?” I asked Mum.
“Whatever you want to talk about,” she answered.
“Well, except for last night, I had a fantastic time,” I said. “I feel like they ruined (毁坏) the whole trip for me.”
“No, sweetie. Don’t let them do that to you. You were there for more than forty-eight hours, and that awful part lasted one hour. Don’t let them take that away from you, okay?”
“I know.” I nodded. “But do I always have to worry about bad guys like that? Like when I grow up, is it always going to be like this?”
“There are always going to be bad guys in the world, Auggie,” she said, looking at me. “But I really believe there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”
“Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.”
“Sometimes people surprise us,” she said, rubbing the top of my head.

10 . While fake (虚假) news can take many forms, it can be divided into two broad types: misinformation and disinformation.
Misinformation Misinformation is when false information is shared by someone who believes that information to be true. Normally it isn’t done on purpose. | Disinformation Disinformation is when misleading or even false information is shared with the intention to deceive (欺骗) others. |
There are lots of reasons why people share fake news. Often the person sharing it doesn’t realize that it’s fake. Sometimes it’s done to advertise a service or product, so that someone can make money. It could even be done to make people laugh.
Fake news can also be shared by someone who wants others to hear their own personal opinions and be affected by them. Still, fake news is shared to influence the opinions and beliefs of others about organizations and business.
Fake news? Question it!
To work out whether the “news” we are reading is fake, we can use our critical (批判性) thinking skills to ask ourselves the following questions.
Is it a mistake or just a joke?
People sometimes share information, believing that it’s true, because they don’t realize that it’s a joke. It might even be April Fools’ Day!
Are there lots of spelling and grammar mistakes?
If yes, it’s a sign that no one is checking the content. This could mean that those writing the content are not professional writers or journalists and the news content is untrustworthy (不可靠的).
Is the article advertising something?
Sometimes a news article can influence us to buy something. Companies will often pay a news organization to talk about their product as if it’s “news” to encourage people to buy it.
Is the headline believable?
Sensational (耸人听闻的) headlines encourage us to click on a story because they catch our attention. Some people get paid for every click, so before clicking, ask yourself, does the story sound made-up, or even impossible?
Is there bias(偏见)?
Sometimes certain facts have been left out of a story because the writer wants the readers to believe it. Bias is an underlying (隐含的) opinion that guides our actions. See if you can fact-check the story with another news source if you’re unsure.
When fake news causes stress or hurt to the person or people it targets (将……作为目标), it is often the case that those who have helped spread it will claim they were not to blame. However, sharing fake news is just like adding fuel (燃料) to a fire. If the false information doesn’t get shared, it doesn’t get seen and cannot fulfil its purpose. When it comes to fake news, it’s not enough to not write something, we must refuse to share it too.
1. What’s the main difference between disinformation and misinformation?A.Disinformation is harmful to the public, while misinformation is not. |
B.Disinformation is shared to deceive others, while misinformation is often not. |
C.Disinformation is aimed at young people, while misinformation is aimed at older ones. |
D.Disinformation is produced by professionals, while misinformation by ordinary people. |
