3 . Jim’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, flew to New York last Friday. The next day is their twentieth wedding anniversary (结婚纪念日). They spent the weekend in New York. Jim who was eighteen years old didn’t go there with his parents. He would like to stay at home alone because he had a secret plan.

Two weeks ago, Jim’s uncle gave him some money to plan a surprising party for his parents. Jim invited eight of his parents’ friends to come to the house before his parents got home from New York on Sunday evening.

Before his parents left, Jim had already bought all the food and hidden it in the loft. Jim was alone on Saturday evening, so he decided to start preparing for the party. He climbed into the loft, but while he was getting the food, the door didn’t move. He tried his phone but there was no signal in the loft.

On Sunday evening, Jim’s parents’ friends started to arrive for the party. While they were ringing the doorbell, Jim shouted but they could not hear him. They were so puzzled(困惑的) and left soon. Jim had to stay there.

Later, when Jim’s parents arrived home, they heard Jim’s shouts. They ran to open the loft door and found Jim there. Jim told his parents what had happened. After hearing it, they looked at each other and laughed.

The Huazhao Festival has a history of more than 2,000 years.     2     It comes after the Lantern Festival. It falls on the 2nd, 12th, 15th or 25th day of the second lunar(农历的) month.

There are lots of traditions for the festival. For example, flower growers often offer sacrifices (祭品) to the flower goddess.     3     In order to protect flowers, people cut colorful cloth into pieces and tie them to the stem (茎) of flowers.     4     But only a few people know “Shang Hong”. People also grow flowers and vegetables on the festival. That’s because they believe flowers and vegetables planted on this day will grow well. We know that the festival is in early spring.     5     Fairs(集市) are often held on that day because lots of people go out. Many kinds of flowers bloom during these days. As well as doing some shopping, there are lots of activities, such as dancing, singing and playing games.
