1 . I was running a few errands(差事)in my car the other day. The sun was out, the radio was playing a joyful song, I was singing along. Then it happened, however, the sweet sound of the music ended and the news break began.
I drove on while the news started. Gas prices were getting high again. The race for the presidency(总统大选) was getting much tighter. Fights broke out when the fans of a sports team went wild while celebrating their team's win.
Finally I could take no more and turned off the radio. Silence seemed preferable to listening to anything else about the crazy and competitive world we live in. I slowed down as I entered a local town and watched the people as I drove by.
A man was helping an elderly lady out of a car and helping her walk into a store. A smiling woman was feeding a dozen birds in her backyard. A young man was walking along, carrying his 2-year-old daughter safely. He tickled( 胳肢) her gently when she pulled the hat off his head and they both laughed. I laughed too as I looked at all of this kindness. Although the music was off, I felt my heart singing.
In truth, this world could use a little more kindness and a lot less competition. Kindness makes us all winners in life and shows us that we don't have to beat others all the time.

2 . Large stores are doing a lot of different things to try to attract more shoppers. Many of them now have greeters who stand near the door. The greeters' job is to say hello to the shoppers and make them feel at home. They also help people find what they are looking for and answer any other question. College students often take jobs as greeters. Greeters don't get paid very well, but they don't need to spend much time on the job. They have the time to do other things like study.
Discount programs are also a way to attract shoppers. Some stores give discounts if a shopper spends a certain amount of money. For example, the shopper may get 20 percent off on the first $100 he or she spends. When the shopper spends over $ 100, the discount may reach 25 percent. This encourages shoppers to spend more money at this store.
_________This is a very easy way to shop. It becomes really important during holiday seasons when the stores are crowded with shoppers. For many people, it's much more enjoyable to sit at home with a cup of coffee and pick out what they want. To make online shopping even more attractive, most stores provide lower prices. Some people think that one day we’ll do all our shopping on the Internet.

‘USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?’ We often hear such discussions. As China opens its door, it is a dream for many Chinese students to study abroad. They want to learn about the outside world.
It’s true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Their foreign language skills will be improved and it may be easier to find jobs.
But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language.
Students must also learn to live without parents’ care and deal with all kinds of things they haven’t had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad running into an ocean of difficulties and giving up finally. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.
Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden(负担)to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth it?
We know that there are many famous people who have achieved success through their hard work in China. Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there, but he refused. He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games. So when you wonder which country is better to study in, think again.
