1 . Calligraphy (书法), in English, means the art of producing beautiful hand-writing using special pens or brushes. Chinese calligraphy is a traditional form of writing characters with a long history that is about 1,000 years.
There are five main kinds of traditional Chinese calligraphy. They are zhuanshu, lishu, kaishu, xingshu and caoshu. Through centurics of practicc, Chinese calligraphy can be seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels, and houses. Calligraphy isn’t only popular among the Chinese. Picasso, the world-famous master of art, once said, “If I once lived in China, I must have become a calligrapher rather than a painter.”
Art has no borders (边界), right? Well, practicing Chinese calligraphy needs basic instruments. They are brush, inkstick (墨), paper, and inkstone (砚). We Chinese call them the “Four Treasures of the Study”. It’s impossible for everyone to become a master of Chinese calligraphy. But practicing it more often is really useful and helpful. First, you can learn hand-writing to improve your understanding of Chinese characters. Next, it is believed that calligraphers enjoy a long life because the practice is a good form of physical training. Besides, you have to get concentrated and have a peaceful mind when practicing it. This way, you will get improved and your worries will be gone.
Some primary schools offer lessons to teach students Chinese calligraphy. There are also clubs of Chinese calligraphy started by calligraphy lovers. Chinese calligraphy is an important part of our traditional culture. We should pass on this kind of classical culture.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)has a long history and it’s an important part of Chinese culture. Around 3,000 years ago, people began to write about how to stay healthy and treat different illnesses. The doctors at that time had smart ways to find out what was wrong with man’s body. The ways they used can be described as “observing(观察), listening, questioning, and pulse(脉搏)reading.”
Some great Chinese doctors wrote many medicine books about TCM in history. The earliest medicine book was written by Shennong who explained how herbs(草药)could help us. In order to write this book, he tasted hundreds of herbs. Finally, he recorded about 365 kinds of plants in the book and many of them are still used today.
During the Ming Dynasty, traditional medicine improved a lot. One of the most famous doctors called Li Shizhen gave his ideas about how to use different herbs and how they worked in his book. He divided illnesses into groups and listed several ways to treat them. This helped other doctors know how to help sick people better.
TCM has been developing with the times. Nowadays, more and more people believe it’s helpful to our health. As Chinese culture is spread to the world, TCM will be widely used in the future.

The Chinese dragon is one of the most important parts in Chinese culture. Chinese dragons look like a combination (结合体) of many animals such as snakes, fish and deer in Chinese culture. They have two horns (角) and a long body. They also have fantastic powers—they can fly in the sky, swim in the sea and can even make rain.
The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of dragons.
We are proud to call ourselves the “descendants (传人) of the dragon”. In Chinese, excellent people are often called “dragons”. A number of Chinese sayings talk about dragons. For example, “Hope one’s child will become a dragon” means hoping he or she will be successful.
It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon are creative, active, brave and it’s easier for them to get angry. There are also some traditional festivals about dragons in China, such as the Dragon Head-raising Day and the Dragon Boat Festival. The festivals are celebrated differently by us. These two festival s come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years.
People who are interested in Chinese culture may study dragons and it will be helpful for them to have a better understanding of Chinese culture. As the “descendants of the dragon”, it is our duty to work together to pass our traditional culture on to more and more people.

4 . These days, many parents push their children into learning more skills. They believe it helps their kids to better compete in life. However, such a busy life can place great pressure on students.
The Taylors are a typical American family. Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. “On most days after school,” Cathy says, “I take one of my two boys to basketball practice and my daughter to football training. Then I have to take my other son to piano lessons. Maybe I could cut out a few of their activities, but I believe these activities are important for my children’s future. I really want them to be successful.” However, the tired children don’t get home until after 7:00 p.m. They have a quick dinner, and then it’s time for homework.
Linda Miller, a mother of three, knows all about such stress. “In some families, competition starts very young and continues until the kids get older,” she says. “Mothers send their small kids to all kinds of classes. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. I don’t think that’s fair. Why don’t they just let their kids be kids? People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.”
Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child’s development. Dr. Alice Green says all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children. “Kids should have time to relax and think for themselves, too. Although it’s normal to want successful children, it’s even more important to have happy children.”

5 . Children can teach adults a lot. In other words, there are many things adults can learn from children. Hope you can know how to do it from the following suggestions.
Kids tend to show love. Every action they do for parents, friends, pets, and people they like, is full of love. They don’t think twice before loving, and they just love. So adults can learn this: the best way to receive love is to give it first.
Kids never hide feelings. They cry when they hurt themselves, and express displeasure when things don’t go their way. However, we adults never express ourselves sincerely. In fact, it’s not strange to cry or express yourself. Because everybody is supposed to let out the feeling freely, not only the children.
Kids are curious (好奇的) about everything. They always ask lots of questions every day. This curious nature guides their life, and often leads them to simple but wonderful discoveries. Most of adults aren’t. We don’t even ask questions if we don’t understand something.
Kids live in the present. They never worry about the future. So life is great today. However, with a job, money, and relationships, it’s hard for an adult to enjoy life. We can live like a child. Don’t worry about the future, because it’s not in your control.

Household (家庭) waste is a kind of waste which is created in everyday life. It includes broken dishes, used paper, banana or apple peels, and so on. Some of the household waste is not harmful while others can be.
A busy household can create a great deal of waste. And the amount (量) of household waste can increase quickly, especially in countries which depend heavily on packaging (包装) for products. Many families like to deal with their waste by simply burning it or putting it underground. These ways can be dangerous because they have a bad influence on the environment.
So how should you correctly deal with your household waste? Firstly, before throwing away something, think about whether it can be used again. Generally, paper, glass and bottles can be broken down and reused. Then, put harmful household waste into different rubbish bins.
Secondly, record how much waste you create. You can weigh your household waste every day or every few days and record the amount for several months. It can sometimes be a surprising experience. Even people who think they have a small number of rubbish bins find that they create a lot of waste. Then they may be encouraged to try to create less waste.
Besides, dealing with household waste also, needs governments’ efforts. Nowadays, many governments have paid attention to the problem of such waste. And they have come up with many ideas to solve it.

In China, more and more people have realized the seriousness of climate (气候) change. Many people have been living a low-carbon (低碳) life.
Zheng Xiyu is one of them. Every morning, she takes a bus to her office and it takes her about 40 minutes. But she wants to try a different way of transport—cycling. She finds riding a bicycle to work takes about as much time as taking a bus. “However, it’s better for the environment and my health.” she says.
Professor Li Lin uses energy-saving lights. These lights go off themselves when they are not needed, which can save a lot of electricity. Professor Li says small actions are important for protecting the environment.
Gao Hui always chooses products with a longer life when he shops. He says this helps to reduce waste. Two years ago, Gao and his friends set up an environment website, where he wanted to give some advice on saving energy and protecting the environment.

Animals play so many important roles in our lives. Some, like cows and sheep, provide us with food; pets are our friends; other animals work for us. Above all, every animal — big or small — can fill us with a sense of the wonder of the natural world.
Unluckily, we don’t always value this. Many animals are endangered because of our actions, and millions of animals in the world are badly treated. World Animal Day reminds us, at least for one day a year, “to celebrate animal life in all its forms” and “to be thankful for the way in which animals enrich (使丰富) our lives.”
World Animal Day was started in 1931 in Florence, Italy. It made us pay attention to the problem of endangered animals around the world. It is now celebrated in most countries around the world. The day falls on October 4th every year.
All over the world on this day, volunteers raise money for animal centers and social organizations. Museums and zoos organize special events. Schools have also joined animal projects. No matter what is done, the idea is to remind us of the importance of animals and to show us how we could improve our relationship with animals.
If you want to take part, you could help an animal or organize a money-raising event for a local charity. The important thing is just taking an active part. We should offer animals as much as they offer us.

My hometown (家乡) is a small but beautiful town. I left my hometown ten years ago. Now, when I came back, I found that it changed (变化) a lot.
When I left, there were only a few small shops in my hometown. Now, there is a big supermarket in the south of the town. And there are different kinds of things in it. There was a great park there before, but people cut down all the trees. It is a pity (遗憾).
In the north of the town, there was a town library. It was old and small ten years ago but it is big and beautiful now. There is also a new post office just across from my old school.
In the center of the town, there are also more flowers and trees, and they are so beautiful. I like my hometown very much!

10 . Cody and his sister April wanted a dog. They went to the local pet store and looked around. It was a very small one that didn’t have many animals. The boss of the store was a nice old man named Mr. Smith.
“Good morning, my dears. How can I help you?” Mr. Smith asked.
“We would like to buy a dog, sir,” April replied.
“Well, there are only two to pick from,” Mr. Smith answered.
They asked Mr. Smith to show them the dogs. One of them was a very big bulldog named Buster. The other was a very tiny chihuahua (吉娃娃) named Teacup.
April wanted Teacup, but Cody preferred Buster. They couldn’t agree on a pet. April suggested they race home for it, and the winner could choose the dog. Cody agreed, then told April to tie her shoelace (鞋带). When April looked down, he ran off and got a head start. Cody made the best of his legs. He really wanted that bulldog.
Cody finally got home, tired but happy. He knew he was the winner. April congratulated him, though a bit unhappy. They returned to the pet store to buy Buster the bulldog.
However, when they arrived they only saw Teacup the chihuahua. They asked Mr. Smith where Buster was. Mr. Smith explained that a few minutes after April and Cody left, two boys walked in and bought the bulldog. Cody looked at April, and she held back a smile.
Mr. Smith said to Cody, “You won the race, but you lost the prize!” “Go home with us, doggy.” April picked up the chihuahua, leaving Cody to pay the boss.
