Earth Day comes every April 22. It’s a day to do some good for the planet. Here are two young people who have taken action for Mother Earth. They’re     1     (hero) for the Planet.

Fighting Wildfire

When Emma was 11, her family moved from Chicago to Northern California. Soon after, the Camp Fire started. “It was one of     2     (large) fires in California history,” Emma recalls. Her school was about 200 miles south of the fire. But students had to wear masks because of the smoke. “It was     3     terrible experience for me”, she says. It made her want to find a solution. She created a way     4     (use) artificial intelligence (AI) to predict forest fires. Her method is nearly 90% correct. “I realized that     5     I could succeed, the results would make a big     6     (different).”

Recycling Power

Kim learned a scary fact on his     7     (ten) birthday. Every year, people throw out 15 billion batteries (电池). They pollute groundwater and harm the environment. Kim’s organization, Recycle My Battery, provides recycling bins     8     batteries. This organization has a team of 250 student volunteers around the world. In the past three years, they     9     (help) to recycle more than 260,000 batteries. Say “No” to the Wrong Idols (偶像)

It is natural for young people to worship (崇拜) cool and good-looking young “idols.” We always look     1     to listening to their new songs and movies. What could I do to be cool like them?

4 . Linda loves her dog Dave. They went to New York City last Saturday. While Linda     1     (buy) a newspaper at the train station，the dog got out of his box and     2     (run) away. Sun Jiarui, a 10-year-old girl from a primary school, recently was famous online for her     1     (cook) skills. Sun, who has been learning to cook from her father, now can cook over fifty     2     (dish).

It is     3     (report) that Sun Jiarui liked going to the restaurant with her parents and watching her father cook food     4     she was four or five years old. Jessie and her two young sisters lived with their mother in an apartment building. One evening, a fire started on the     1     (two) floor of the building. They ran outside to safety in a hurry.

Soon, the firefighters arrived. They were trying to control the fire so that it wouldn’t spread to buildings nearby. The small fire soon turned into a huge flame. Standing in horror, the children watched their apartment building burning for     5     (hour). Finally, it collapsed (倒 塌). All the families were put in a hotel for the night. That immediate help came from the Red Cross office. But how would they get their lives back     9     normal? Their neighbors, friends, relatives and strangers came to help. They brought clothes, food, money and even teddy bears. Jessie’s mother told her children later, “We can’t forget     11     many people have done for us. So in the future, we should also help more people if they need.”

Once upon a time, there was a rabbit in the forest, she thought she was smart and popular there. One day, she found a bird in a tree. “Hey! Your house is good! An all-girl lion dance team breaks a “men only” tradition 女醒狮队横空出世，打破偏见

The lion dance     1     (hold) a special place in the hearts of people in Guangdong province.     2     history, it was a men’s art only. But the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team from Renhe town, Guangzhou, broke the tradition with     3     all-girl team.

Coach Zhang Zheliang saw the number of young lion dancers going down and started     4     (train) girls in 2018. But     5     (village) didn’t like this. Girl dancers couldn’t even perform because some villagers took away their dance props (道具) or drove     6     (they) off.

    7    , Zhang and his coach, Yu Weizhao, didn’t give upon their idea to set up an all-girl lion dance team. They     8     (final) found girl dancers and trained them hard.

Their hard work paid off when the girls won their     9     (one) big award (奖) over the men’s teams in 2021. They had more wins and this made them respected (受人尊重的) in the lion dance community. Today. the team has over 20 girls aged 7 to 19.
