Do you enjoy dancing? Many people do. Some of them, however, dance in special places. Yang Liu, a 24-year-old woman from Guizhou, dances on a piece of bamboo.
Yang is an inheritor (继承人) of bamboo drifting (独竹漂), an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in her hometown. Bamboo drifting has a history of 2,000 years. In the past, people used it to cross the river. Now, it becomes a traditional art.
Yang started to learn bamboo drifting at the age of seven. The girl was always ill when she was very young. To have a strong body, her grandmother brought her into the world of bamboo drifting. Learning this traditional skill, in fact, is not easy. The bamboo is thin and slippery (滑). And it is never still. Keeping standing on the bamboo is very difficult. Yang fell into the water and got hurt (受伤) again and again. But with the help of her family and a love for this “cool skill”, the girl didn’t give up. She always climbed back onto the bamboo. Yang put herself into learning how to bamboo drift all year round, even in the cold of winter and the heat of summer. After three years of hard practice, she could finally stand on the bamboo.
▲ . She had the idea of dancing on the bamboo drifting. She went on practicing many difficult acts on her bamboo and went through all kinds of difficulties along with it.
Now, Yang has made a name for herself as a dancer on the bamboo. She is busy performing this traditional art and she will perform in more than 30 cities in 2023. It’s difficult to get the tickets to enjoy her performance.
Thanks to the people like her, Chinese traditional skills pass down (传承) from our ancestors (祖先).

7 . It was a busy Saturday as usual, for “Six days shall you work and finish all your work” was taken seriously back then. Outside, my father and Mr. Patrick were preparing firewood. Inside their own houses, my mother and Mrs. Patrick were busy with spring cleaning.
Somehow a few boys ran to the field with their kites, catching everyone’s attention nearby. My mother looked at the messy room. Again she looked out of the window. “Come on, girls! Let’s watch the boys fly kites.” On the way, we met Mrs. Patrick, laughing in shame as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls.
We played with the boys and watched the kites fly higher and higher. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back, watching it dance in the wind, and finally brought it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again. Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. At that moment we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty, and children forgot their everyday fights.
The strange thing was that we didn’t mention that day afterward. So I locked the memory up in my heart.
Years went on. Then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen, while my daughter was crying “go park, see duck”. “No.” I said. “I have lots of things to do, and when I’m through I’ll be tired”.
My mom, who was visiting us, offered “It’s a warm day with breeze. Do you remember the day we flew kites?” I stopped my work with a rush of memories. Then I told my little girl, “Let’s go! It’s too good a day to miss.”
Another decade passed. I visited the youngest Patrick boy who was badly ill. A smile slipped out from his pale lips, “Do you remember—no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t have the influence on you as it did on me.” “Remember what?” “The day we flew kites.”

8 . In Lagardo, people built a special college for inventors (发明家)! There were hundreds of rooms, and there was an inventor working hard in each one.
In the first room I met a man who could get the sunlight out of cucumbers (黄瓜) and then keep it in a bottle (瓶子).
When it was cold weather, people could open the bottle to let the sunlight out to keep warm.
Oh, in the next room, a man was using a machine to write really wonderful books by putting words together in different orders. He expected to have just one book that can be useful enough for culture and science study. What a clever invention it is!
There were so many inventors that I couldn’t describe them all, but ________. He tried building the house by building the roofs (屋顶) first. He said bees and spiders, the smartest animals, built their houses in this way.
One inventor made special cookies for students. Boys and girls learned things by eating the cookies (饼干) with their lessons on them! To let the cookies work their magic, however, the students couldn’t eat anything before having the cookies. And after having them, students could only have bread and water for the following three days. Students either felt uncomfortable or hungry. That really worried me. I wondered if it was necessary to have such cookies.
There were hundreds of more inventors in the college, but I decided to make my way home.
