This year’s Beijing Culture Forum was held from Sept.14 to 15 in the capital. Here are a series of talks with famous persons covering various fields.
Goran Durdevic:Goran Durdevic, lecturer of the Beiwai College, Beijing Foreign Studies University, said: “I’m particularly interested in those parts dedicated to cultural heritage and archeology.”
Citing his documentaries about heritages in Beijing as examples, he said: “I will talk about several documentaries.”
Agshin Aliyev:“I’m impressed by what China has achieved in digital use in education and culture during the past decade,” said Agshin Aliyev, PhD, head of the Azerbaijani Language Department at the School of Asian Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University.
“We have also witnessed China’s efforts for its culture going global and telling China’s stories to foreign friends.”
Sha Xiaolan:“Technology has redefined the communication, creation and experience of culture, paving the way for entirely new possibilities,” said director and producer Sha Xiaolan.
“While AR and VR technologies bring the immersion(沉浸)of cultural experiences, AR technology is gradually finding its way in creative fields, becoming part of cultural creativity.”
Zhao Shengliang:Zhao Shengliang, secretary of the CPC Committee of Dunhuang Academy, said, “As we have access to many digital resources, we can use them to create movies or television programmes. We also make cultural and creative products explaining Dunhuang culture in popular and understandable language, as well as products that show Dunhuang’s art and features.”

2 . Sharing a room with a family member or a friend can be tough (困难), but it becomes especially difficult when you are sharing it with someone you hardly know. If you find yourself in a similar situation, do not despair. There are things you can do to help you cope with having a roommate, no matter who it may be.
First of all, you have to remember that you get what you give. If you are nice to others, then others will be nice to you as well. You also need to set boundaries for yourself and for the other person. So before your new roommate moves in, talk to him. Set the rules early on and discuss your hopes.
Remember that there are two things that make up any good relationship: belief and respect. The same thing applies to (适用于) having a roommate. You have to respect each other. So he has that new PS3 game that you have always wanted to try out? Ask permission first. If he says no, don’t ask him for it again. If he lets you borrow his stuff, take care of the item and treat it as if it were your own. Make sure that you return it in the same condition as when you borrowed it.
To keep away from disagreements over who does the housework, clean as you go. For chores (杂务) that can be shared, you may want to divide it equally so that you don’t do all the housework. Take turns in washing the dishes. You may do it every other day or you may divide the task so that you only have to do it in the morning and your roommate will only have to do it at night.
When it comes to food and grocery items, determine what can be shared. Don’t be too mean when it comes to sharing food. On the other hand, determine what you can share and what you can’t and be clear about it. The advantage of sharing food is that you can save on time and food preparation.

One fun way to explore your neighborhood is through wildlife. The Week Junior Science+Nature’s summer scavenger hunt (寻宝游戏) asks you to track down 10 natural objects, including clouds and creepy-crawlies. There’s also a photo competition for young nature lovers.
Summer is the best time for butterfly-spotting, and iRecord Butterflies is a free app that helps you to identify the ones you see. It also uses the data to protect these beautiful creatures.
Another cool app worth checking is Seek by iNaturalist, which includes information about all sorts of wildlife, including bugs, fish and plants. And you can take part in monthly challenges. It’s been designed for families to use.
Finally, there’s Parkrun, where adults and young people get together to run in thousands of local parks. The Junior Parkrun website has a map showing you when and where these events take place, to help find your nearest one.

5 . Windows open? Fans on? Ready for another water break? For schools across Greater Toronto, the extremely hot temperatures provided some lessons in how to beat the heat—or at least attempt to—without air conditioning. It wasn’t easy. With some classroom temperatures getting close to 40℃—one teacher even handed out temperature meters to see how hot it got—both students and educators were red-faced and bathed with sweat all day.
The extreme weather had some parents wondering if their children should be spending most of the day inside hot schools, and a few chose to keep them home. Very few schools across Greater Toronto are air-conditioned. There are no rules or requirements that schools shut down as the temperature rises.
At Bowmore public school, near Coxwell Ave. and Gerrard St. E, teachers arrive at 7 am and open all the doors and windows to circulate fresh air. The windows at the school, replaced in stages over the past few years, swing in at the top, and out at the bottom to provide better air flow.
“Is it hot? Yes. Is it something that makes us feel uncomfortable? Yes,” said Headmaster Lilian Hanson. Despite that, she said she’d never advocate for air conditioners in schools, which are expensive and would consume the city’s electric power. She’d rather see more gardens, more trees—more natural solutions, more sustainable choices.
“We are teaching kids to make good choices,” she said. “Social responsibility is the key.” Students from kindergarten to Grade 8 seek pleasant places under trees and in the outdoor peaceful garden during the break time between classes and after school as the trees there provide much-needed shade. Teachers also take classes with students out there during the day. And kids do get the message about staying cool. Students are reminded to dress in cool clothing. When Hanson arrived at work in a dark-colored dress, a student asked her: “What were you thinking wearing a black dress on a day like today?”

His mom put the dandelion near her mouth and blew the flowers up and down. The dandelion seeds then flew in the air, spreading far away with the wind. The mother gave the dandelion to her son. He didn’t know what the plant was, but he knew it was fun to play with, which made him giggle (咯咯笑) so happily.
Now the dandelion knew its value and didn’t feel sad. It lived a beautiful life just by being itself. It wasn’t as beautiful as other flowers, but it brought the child a simple kind of happiness that money can’t buy.
The dandelion’s story tells us that everyone is special and great. We can help others in one way or another. We’re far greater than we think we are.
