Changing Lives Through Maths!
Mathnasium of North Oxford, your neighbourhood maths-only learning centre!
We help children aged 13—18 understand maths in a special way. Our way of teaching children maths, the Mathnasium Method, has changed the way students learn maths for over a decade across 800 centres worldwide:
We know how to teach your child maths.
Our specially trained maths teachers will teach your child how to understand maths in a special setting—our unique approach enables us to effectively explain maths concepts well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our teachers create a caring, encouraging environment that helps your child “catch up, keep up and get ahead” in their maths learning.
We find exactly your child’s learning needs, meet them where they are and take them where they need to go.
At Mathnasium we use our unique assessment process to determine exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, we design an individual learning plan for each student. It doesn’t stop there—our teachers continually check progress along the way to make sure students truly understand the concepts we’ve taught. Students learn maths at their own speed and according to their own level. They will see obvious changes in attitude, confidence and school progress.

3 . Mike Hayes of Rochelle, Illinois, proved he was smart in his first year at college. In 1987, while he was a student in the first year of the University of Illinois, he had gotten $2,500 from a job working at a store, but that money would not go far to pay the four years of tuition (学费) and college expenses that added up to around $28,000. His middle-class family had already put his older brothers through college. While Mike’s parents would have helped him to pay, Mike decided he did not want his parents to go into debt for him. He came up with an idea to solve this problem.
Mike wrote to Chicago Tribune writer Bob Greene. He wanted each of the newspaper’s readers to send him a penny (分). Greene thought the idea sounded fun and agreed to do it. He shared Mike’s letter with his readers on September 6,1987.
“Just one penny,” Mike said. “A penny doesn’t mean anything to anyone. If everyone who is reading your reports looks around the room right now, there will be a penny on the corner of the desk, or on the floor. That’s all I’m asking. A penny from each of your readers.”
In less than a month, the Many Pennies for Mike fund (基金) had around $23,000.Donations were received from every state in the United States, and even Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas. So, Mike achieved his $28,000 goal and went on to learn food science from the University of Illinois.
In the end, Mike had this to say about the whole thing, “I just want to express my thanks to everyone ...right now I’m feeling that the world is a pretty great place.”

4 . Since several organisations plan to put the first man on Mars by 2030, new trips to the Moon will take place around 2025. If you go to the Moon, you need a place to stay in. So what will it be like? Maybe the following article can give us some inspiration.
August 23, 2025—Today a new chapter in space travel was written. Rod Markham and his wife-to-be Susan Millster arrived safely on the Moon to spend 5 nights as the first guests at the Starbright Hotel that was set up for this purpose two years ago.
Not only are they the first hotel guests on the Moon, but they also set a new record for expensive accommodation since the price was $3.7 million per night, per person. However, the move from the Earth to the hotel is included in the price.
The hotel itself will probably have a hard time just to try to gain one star in any hotel rating system, because there is no room service. The guests have to do the cleaning of the room themselves and there is no bathroom in it. However. they have more stars than they need just outside their windows.
Rod and Susan will get married by linking their local minister in San Diego, California at 9:00 p.m. EST tonight, and the wedding will be broadcast live by several major TV networks in a 1-hour special report, including the preparations for the trip.
Six astronauts are along with them and during the stay they’ll set up further accommodations for the guests who have made reservations at the Starbright Hotel next year. The hotel has no employees, only some workers when guests stay at it.

6 . Hands-on basketball
The boy was only nine years old when he designed a “hands-on basketball”. Chris Haas had the idea when he saw his friends miss lots of baskets. His basketball has painted hands on it. The hands show you where to put your hands when you throw the ball. Today people use his invention around the world.
Wristies
At age 10, Kathryn Gregory was playing outside one day in the cold. Her wrists (手腕) began to hurt from the cold so she decided to find a way to keep both her hands and wrists warm during the winter. In 1994, she invented Wristies: fuzzy sleeves (毛绒袖子) that can be worn underneath gloves to protect your wrists from the cold. She worked with her mom to get the idea off the ground and now the product is sold worldwide.
Makin’ Bacon
Abbey Fleck was 8 years old when she noticed how much time her parents spent soaking up bacon fat (吸干培根油脂) after cooking. She realized that it might be easier to hang bacon while it cooks. That way you wouldn’t need paper towels and it would even make the bacon healthier. She then worked with her father to design a dish that hangs bacon while it cooks. Now people can see her invention in many supermarkets.
Braille
Louis Braille had an accident when he was three. The accident left him blind. At that time, it was hard for blind children to read. They had to touch raised letters. But it was difficult to tell a Q from an O, an R from a B, and so on. When he was fifteen, Louis invented an alphabet (字母表) that used raised dots. The Braille alphabet was a big success!

7 . Ann Arbor Travel Guide
When you think of Ann Arbor, you likely think of the University of Michigan. In some ways, the two are the same. But Ann Arbor has an identity of its own. That is the unique festivals like Apple Daze in the fall and FestiFools in the spring. And the town is known as the “City of Trees”: visitors can paddle (划船) and hike their way down the lush (茂密的) Huron River Water Trail or appreciate flowers at a local garden in early summer.
Best months to visit
The best time to visit Ann Arbor is between May and September, when temperatures rest comfortably and lots of activities are held there. For example, June is a perfect time to go outside and experience Ann Arbor’s outdoor spaces, like the Huron River and Mathai Botanical Gardens. If a fall or winter trip amuses you, you will still find plenty to do. College football season runs from September to November, so that’s a great time to visit if you’d like to catch a game at Michigan Stadium. In the colder months, you can spend time in Ann Arbor’s many indoor museums or enjoying special holiday events, like Kindle Fest.
Tips for saving money
Eat where the locals do. Many hole-in-the-wall restaurants are frequented by college students and therefore keep their prices reasonable to attract the public.
Walk, walk, and walk. Downtown Ann Arbor is a very walkable area. In fact, driving and parking a car is often annoying. By getting around on your feet, you will not only get a better feel for the town, but save money that would have otherwise been spent on a rental car or taxi rides.

9 . Should I stay or should I go? An LED device for driverless cars aims to give pedestrians at a crossing the power to communicate with cars, signaling for them to stop or drive on.
Blink, created by researchers at the Royal College of Arts and Imperial College London, turns the awkward dance of eye contact and hand gestures that happens when a car slows down while someone is waiting to cross the road into something driverless cars can understand.
Blink combines an organic light display with the windscreen and windows of a car and uses light signals to show pedestrians when the car is aware of their presence. If the car detects a pedestrian,a figure lights up.
If a pedestrian raises a hand as a stop sign, the figure turns green, directing the pedestrian to cross, and the car is prevented from moving forward. If they place a hand out to the side to signal for the car to go forward, the figure turns red and the car continues.
But George Filip at the University of Nottingham, UK, isn’t certain it is a good idea to give pedestrians control over driverless cars. He says cities could end up crowded because pedestrians keep stopping cars.
“Producers should wait until the novelty of driverless cars has worn off before creating car pedestrian communications systems,” he says.“ We need to learn how people actually communicate with autonomous cars.”
The idea is to help people feel more comfortable around driverless cars, says Blink cocreator Raunaq Bose. “It effectively gives pedestrians the car stopping powers of lollipop men and women.”
The team hasn’t yet tested the device on a driverless car, but Bose says several automotive companies have expressed interest.
