3 . Since the beginning of the summer in 2022, China has been sweltering under the worst heatwave in decades. A number of people in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Sichuan provinces were diagnosed with thermoplegia (热射病), the most severe form of heatstroke, and some even died of this disease.

In a warming world, the hazards of heatwaves are increasing. “Over the past four decades, the main drivers of the large increase in heatwave-related deaths in China are the rapid increase in the frequency of heatwaves, followed by population growth, population aging, and rising baseline mortality (基线死亡率),” said Prof. Huang Cunrui, a researcher from Tsinghua University. According to a study, the number of deaths caused by heatwaves in China has increased rapidly since 1979, from 3679 persons per year in the 1980s to 15,500 persons per year in the 2010s.

High temperatures would accelerate the loss in soil moisture (水分). What’ s more, each additional degree of warming will increase crop losses to insects by 10 - 25 percent, threatening food security for billions of people. China has witnessed a range of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, flooding, tornadoes, and record heatwaves this year. Meteorological officials said the country had an average temperature of 21.3 degrees Celsius in June, 0.9 degrees Celsius higher than the same period on average, and the highest record for the same period since 1961.

Experts say that while extreme summer heat is not entirely new, these sorts of occurrences could be something that becomes a standard part of life, requiring people to start learning how to cope with heatwaves that may continue for the rest of summer and well into the future.

Remember that even healthy, young athletes can be harmed by extreme heat, so every activity should be evaluated when extreme heat hits. There are some ways to stay safe during extreme heat events, such as drinking plenty of water, looking for shade or remaining in shade when outside, and avoiding cooking large meals.

1. What is the major reason for the increase in heatwave-related deaths in China?
A.The aging of the population.
B.The higher frequency of heatwaves.
C.The higher level of death rate.
D.The increase of the population.
2. How does the author illustrate the hazards of heatwaves according to paragraph 2 and paragraph 3?
A.By listing examples.
B.By comparing statistics.
C.By giving explanations.
D.By referring to previous findings.
3. What can we infer from experts’ statement?
A.The government should take measures to solve the extreme heat.
B.The rare heatwave in summer is coming to an end.
C.People may get accustomed to the extreme heat in summer.
D.Extreme summer heat has never occurred before.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Significance of being aware of the danger of extreme heat.
B.Prediction of the extreme weather events in the future.
C.Conclusion of the relationship between heatwave and health.
D.Effective ways to protect people from heatwave.

4 . If a president, a legendary philosopher, and one of the best-selling authors of all time credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.” And Charles Dickens made his point: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and perish (死亡).”

Researchers have traced numerous connections between walking and generating ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside — versus on a treadmill (跑步机) — produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. You’ve probably heard the phrase Exercise your creativity, which refers to the brain as muscle. Our creative mindset is triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking — with your dog, a friend, or alone — feeds creative thinking. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities.

Research has shown that immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology, increased performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50 percent in a group of hikers.

So why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, to notice the way people move, the way the sun reflects in a puddle. Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.

1. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To inform us of the examples of these great minds.
B.To stress the importance of walking.
C.To explain why walking is popular with people.
D.To show the great influence of the great minds have on us.
2. What does the writer probably support?
A.By going outside, one can’t help but get distracted by the scenery.
B.Walking on a treadmill makes participants do the most creative work.
C.It is necessary to walk out of your habitual surroundings and comfort zone.
D.Absorbed in multimedia and technology, hikers can increase performance on creative problem-solving tasks.
3. What does the underlined word “triggered” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Caused.B.Changed.C.Covered.D.Cured.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Developing a good habit of walking.
B.Benefits of walking.
C.New possibilities of walking.
D.Walking for a more creative mind.

5 . A growing number of Americans are turning gas-powered vehicles into electric ones by using a process called an electric power train conversion. Such conversions are becoming more popular as battery technology gets better and the world turns toward cleaner energy sources.

Kevin Erickson owns a 1972 Plymouth Satellite that he renamed “Electrollite” after conversion. Now, the car can go from a still position to 97 kilometers per hour in about three seconds. Its top speed is almost 250 kilometers per hour.

Jonathan Klinger is vice president of car culture for Hagerty Insurance. He said converting classic cars into EVs is “definitely a trend”, although research on the activity is limited. In May, the Michigan-based company did a web-based study of about 25,000 automobile lovers. The top three reasons for converting the vehicles were for better performance, for a fun project, and because of environmental concerns. He doesn’t think electric motors will replace all gas engines. Some car lovers want to keep the sound of older cars' original engines. Electric conversions require special knowledge to complete. They also involve many difficulties like safety concerns. And then there is the price.

Sean Moudry, who co-owns Inspire EV, a small conversion business near Denver, recently worked on a 1965 Ford Mustang. The year-and-a-half-long project cost more than $100,000. Moudry and his partners replaced the gas engine with a motor from a crashed Tesla Model S. He says many people don’t have the resources necessary to carry out this kind of project. As a result, he says, it will take 20 years for electric conversions to become common.

But that reality could be coming sooner than expected, says Mike Spagnola, president and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), a trade group. He said that electric vehicle products took about 1950 square meters of marketing space at SEMA's yearly show in Las Vegas this fall. That was up from only 232 square meters at the 2021 show.

I’m John Russell.

1. In which aspect do electric vehicles benefit from the conversion?
A.Performing better.B.Cleaning energy sources.
C.Maintaining speed.D.Bettering battery technology.
2. How many factors contribute to gas-powered vehicles not being replaced according to Klinger?
A.3.B.4.C.5.D.6.
3. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Selling an old car.B.Buying a gas-powered vehicle.
C.Doing a web-based study.D.Converting a car to an electric one.
4. What can we know about the writer of the passage?
A.He loves classic cars.B.He repairs old cars.
C.He is a broadcaster.D.He is good at engineering.
