2 . Dear Dr. Bob,

I was visiting my sister Mary, who has two boys, aged seven and five. They were throwing a ball around the living room. She asked them several times to stop, but they didn't listen to her. Finally, one of the boys threw the ball and knocked over a lamp. She shouted loudly at them for several minutes. Then, she sent them to their room. She looked at me and said, "They never listen to me."

Carmen

Dear Carmen,

Your sister needs to be clear to her children what behavior she expects. She should tell her boys,   "Don't throw the ball in the house. If you throw the ball again, I'm going to take it." Then, she needs to do what she says. Her boys will soon learn to listen to her.

Dr. Bob

Dear Dr. Bob,

I walked into my two-year-old daughter's bedroom and found her coloring on the wall again with her crayons. I told her, "No! No! Never write on the wall with your crayons. You can only write on paper." My husband thought I was too easy on her and that she needed a spanking (打屁股). What is your opinion?

Debbie

Dear Debbie,

You dealt with the situation well. Children this age are too little to understand the relationship between their actions and a spanking. Use this as a warning; it's time to babyproof your home. Now that your little one is more active and curious (好奇的), what else can she reach? Check her room and your home for crayons, paints, medicines, cleaning products, and other things that might interest her.

Bob

3 . A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".

The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt severely. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. Actually, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

6 . Being able to find high quality health care at an affordable price is a problem to be solved in many countries. In the United States, Walmart, a large chain store, is trying to help. It is offering something new to its employees: cutting the cost of a doctor’s appointment to only $4 instead of the usual $40 for the same service.

The catch is that the patient and doctor must meet over the internet. This online service is called “telemedicine.”

Walmart is the latest major business in the United States to push its workers toward a high-tech way to be examined and treated by doctors. Thanks to telemedicine, people can talk with medical experts from the privacy of their own homes, often using a secure video connection.

Supporters say online visits make it easier for patients to see an expert or quickly find help for problems considered non-emergencies.

Some healthcare needs are well-suited for telemedicine. It can help people seeking treatment for insect bites or skin conditions. Patients who have had medical treatments and cannot move around easily can use telemedicine for their follow-up visits. Also, people seeking help for mental health issues can benefit from the privacy that telemedicine gives.

But still, many people do not use telemedicine, they continue to go to the doctor’s office when they are sick. 80 percent of middle-size and large U.S. companies offered telemedicine services to their workers in 2018. However, only 8 percent of its employees used telemedicine at least once in 2017.

Compared with seeing a real doctor in person, some people may think the quality of telemedicine is not as good. Parents, for example, may feel they are not giving their child the best care if they use a virtual doctor appointment. Older adults may look forward to their in-person doctor appointments. For them, going to the doctor’s office is a big event, something they look forward to.

Another reason some adults may not use telemedicine services is trust. Tom Hill, aged 66, says he has no plans to ever use telemedicine. He does not buy anything online, let alone do something as personal as seeing a doctor. He says, for him, it is important to look his doctor in the eye and shake hands.

However, for some people, especially young people and busy students, telemedicine might be a good choice. It can cut down on the time away from work. It can also cut down on the cost of doctor visits.

1. What is Walmart trying to help with?
A.Finding something new for its employees.
B.Promoting the online service “telemedicine”.
C.Cutting the online cost of a doctor’s appointment.
D.Reducing the cost of seeing a doctor at a much lower price.
2. What is True about “telemedicine”?

C.It is the online service that is provided by most large US companies.
D.It makes it easier to see a doctor for emergency problems.
3. Why do most people prefer to go to the doctor’s office when they are ill?
A.Because their company doesn’t provide telemedicine.
B.Because they don’t trust the doctors online.
C.Because they look forward to a virtual doctor appointment.
D.Because they have made friends with the doctors.
4. Who is most likely to apply “telemedicine”?

8 . When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”, I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?

As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer.

Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids and the sun huts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.

When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like sales people.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.

1. What did the author’s father really mean?
A.To read about fish.B.To learn fishing by oneself.
C.To understand what fish think.D.To study fishing in many ways.
2. After entering the business world, the author found ________.
A.it easy to think like a customerB.his father’s fishing advice inspiring
C.his first boss’s sales ideas reasonableD.it difficult to sell services to poor people
3. This passage most likely comes from ________.
A.a fishing guideB.a popular sales book
C.a novel on childhoodD.a millionaire’s biography

9 . There are many things that influence whether someone has a quiet voice or a loud voice. Physical factors at work include the size of the person’s “voice box”, the amount of breath support the speaker provides and the size of the speaker’s lungs. Other factors such as the pitch of the voice (too high or too low) influence how well people’s voices are heard, particularly in a crowd.

Personality features are at work here, too. People who are not confident or who are fearful in social situations can find they speak more quietly than they wish they did. In your case, since people are always telling you to speak up, you may be anxious when you speak, which may cause you to become more murmurous.

There are several things that might help you. Professional people have lots of skills to improve the voice so that people with quiet voices can be heard more easily.

It also sounds as if “shyness” is something you see as a problem as well. It might be helpful to take a “confidence training” or “social skills” class to learn how to overcome some of the shyness. You might find that this “speaking too quietly” problem disappears when you feel more self-confident. Some actors report that they are shy people and that acting helps them overcome this anxiety. Acting coaches work with people to help them overcome their public shyness and they often are experts at helping people be heard loudly.

No matter how you decide to do it, we encourage you to ask for help with this worry. Learning to be confident and to be heard is very important. Becoming “confident” doesn’t mean that you will become “too loud.” It only means you will be able to express your views and receive others’ attention.

1. The first paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.what the voice box isB.which factors influence the voice
C.the lung influences the pitchD.different people have different voices
2. If you have a quiet voice, you should ________.
A.seek help from Medical DoctorsB.change your personality features
C.try your best to become a good actorD.learn some skills to improve your voice
3. The writer thinks that ________.
A.it’s easy to build your confidence
B.it’s impossible for a shy girl to speak up
C.confidence can help you express your ideas
D.the louder you speak, the more confident you are
4. All of the following are mentioned in the passage EXCEPT ________.
A.how to speak louderB.that you should be confident
C.that you should always speak loudD.why you have a low voice

10 . From a very early age, some children exhibit better self-control than others. Now, a new study that began with about 1,000 children in New Zealand has tracked how a child's low self-control can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their adult years.

Researchers have been studying this group of children for many years now. They observed the level of self-control the youngsters displayed. Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored the youngsters on measures like “acting before thinking” and “Persistence in reaching goals.”

The study led by Moffitt of Duke University and colleagues followed 1, 000 children from birth to age 32 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

“The children who had the lowest self-control when they were age three to ten, later on had the most health problems in their 30s,” Moffitt said, “and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income.” Moffitt explained that self-control problems were widely observed, and weren’t just a feature of a small group of misbehaving kids.

Moffitt said it's still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though she said other researchers have found that it's mostly a learned-behavior, with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can be set to run in families because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and successful parents. But the good news, Moffitt said, is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school education.

1. From the first two paragraphs we learn that________.
A.the research has been carried out for five years
B.self-control in kids probably determine their future
C.self- control was decided by children's intelligence
D.children's self-control is almost the same at early age
2. Children with low self-control are more likely to ________.
A.become wealthy in later lifeB.get good school performance
C.have better financial planningD.behave negatively
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Self-control cannot be taught in schools.
B.The study is limited within few participants.
C.It's never too late to deal with self-control problems.
D.Good parenting can improve self-control and life success.
