文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是在社交媒体的日益普及以及对传统文化的狂热下,汉服获得了新生。

2 . Benefiting from the growing popularity of social media and a craze for traditional culture, Hanfu, a traditional style of clothing once worn by the Han people, has enjoyed a fresh lease of life thanks to a new wave of young Chinese devotees, including Liu and Yang.

The 1980s-born rocket scientist Liu is also a cofounder of a Hanfu community in Beijing called Hua Yan Hui. The community was founded in 2011 following a Hanfu revival movement that emerged from the desire to express national identity and growing cultural confidence. “At first, people who wore Hanfu in public felt occasionally uneasy, including me, while more passers-by asked about their clothing style,” says Liu. “Social media has made Hanfu culture popular in China and abroad, which contributes to the rapid development of China’s economy,” says Yang. The Hanfu market in China was estimated to reach 12. 54 billion yuan ($1. 81 billion) in 2022 and is expected to rise to 19. 11 billion yuan by 2025, according to research firm iMedia Research.

“It will be a rewarding experience to participate in events in the Forbidden City and other historical palaces in the capital city,” says Yang. She believes that classics will never go out of style as the popularity of sprouts increases around the world.

3 . Jon Pedley is making a big change. He is giving up his life as a businessman for a life of helping others. He is trading his beautiful farmhouse in England for life in a mud hut (小屋) in Uganda, East Africa.

Pedley admitted that he had not always led a very positive life. At times he drank too much and got in trouble with the law. “I had always put the pursuit (追求) of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn’t care who I was hurting,” says Pedley.

But a visit to Uganda in 2007 gave Pedley a new outlook on life. He was amazed at what he saw and how much the people there appreciated the work he was doing. “I worked there for a few days and these people who have nothing were thanking me by giving me bags of potatoes, which are a fortune for them, ”he said. Now Pedley is selling his business, his $1.5 million farmhouse, and his expensive car—and moving into a hut made of mud and boards in a small Ugandan village. There he will help run an organisation that hopes to improve the quality of life for people in the village of Kigazi. He will help to build schoolrooms for children and tanks to hold clean water for villagers. Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.

Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a “camp” in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities for kids in Kigazi, many of whom have lost their parents to poverty or disease. Pedley hopes the teens will see a side of life that might help them turn around their own lives and set them on a new and more positive path.

4 . Cows produce much methane, the world’s second worst greenhouse gas, as they breakdown the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed (海藻) to their food.

Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They added a small amount of seaweed to the cows’ food.

The consequences were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given. Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33%less methane. Over the five months, the scientists didn’t see any signs that the cows’ stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What’s more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows.

But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there’s not adequate seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there’s no chance to feed them seaweed every day.

Still, as the study shows, something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.

1. Why did the researchers carry out the study?
A.To discover healthier grass for cows.B.To improve the cows’ living conditions.
C.To test the effects of the seaweed.D.To measure the amount of methane in the world.
2. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The results of the study.B.The methods of the experiment.
C.The background of the subject.D.The process of the research.
3. What does the underlined word “adequate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Lacking.B.Enough.C.Common.D.Special.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Critical.B.Doubtful.C.Positive.D.Negative.

6 . It was nearly midnight when my wife Rita and I were driving home from the University of Illinois, where our son Randy was a freshman. Rita was asleep in the passenger seat. I headed north, wondering what on earth had made us take the afternoon off to drive to the university and back, a six-hour round trip. All for nothing.

For weeks Randy had been telling me how much fun he was having in football matches. I suddenly got the idea to show up and cheer my son, like we did in high school.

Just several hours earlier, Rita and I had met him on the field. We watched the young go on to the field, warm up, and then…there was something wrong. Randy ran over. “We cannot hold a competition today. The other team doesn't have enough players,” he said. It was not a big deal. I tried to comfort myself. But I'd just driven three hours to get here and I'd had my heart set on seeing my son in action. Instead, we took Randy out for pie and coffee.

As I was driving on the road, a memory rushed back to me when I was a Boy Scout (童子军). Our team made a canoe (独木舟)   journey down the Fox River. My dad drove miles to see me. About a mile downriver we came to a bridge. I looked up and there he was. Dad was standing right on the bridge. He didn't shout like others. He simply waved until we passed underneath. But several miles later, on the next bridge, there he was again. And the one after that. And the next. My dad had taken the chance to show he was always with me.

At last I understood the most important thing I could do for my son — just be there, even if it meant driving a long way.

1. How did the author feel at first when he was driving home with his wife?

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章讲述了竖笛这种乐器的现状和未来。以及人们对其不同的看法。

8 . Depending on your view, the recorder (竖笛) is an instrument of “incredible functions” or a tool of annoyance that has bothered primary schools for too many generations. But now, it faces extinction, with one of the UK’s top music schools reporting an 80% decline in the number of young people playing it in the last 10 years.

The instrument’s future is so imperilled that the European Recorder Teachers Association is trying to bring it back to life again so it does not go the way of the lute. The ERTA argues that if the recorder was good enough for the Beatles, it has a place in modern music today. Tom Redmond, the principal of Chetham’s school of music in Manchester, said only three of its pupils practised the recorder, compared with 15 a decade ago. “More pupils were taking up the piano or other instruments,” said Redmond. “The ones that became really popular are the ones students spend more time playing alone. With the instruments being more socially or orchestral based, there has been a decline.”

Redmond also said that this problem extended “beyond the recorder itself” and was a mirror of the future of music. “Like removing any plant or animal from an ecosystem, removing the recorder has a huge ripple effect (连锁反应) beyond just the instrument. You need these instruments to create the inspiration for music, and without that, there is less excitement for it and to learn music,” he said. Chris Orton, a recorder tutor and chair of the ERTA, is leading the fight against the instrument’s extinction. He said, “The recorder is increasingly overlooked by students, and yet it has a rich history and incredible attractions. As well as making beautiful sounds, it’s an accessible instrument in that it is low-cost compared to other woodwind instruments, and it’s light and easy to carry.”

1. What does the underlined word “imperilled” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Bright.B.Distant.C.Confusing.D.Endangered.
2. What can we infer from Redmond’s words?
A.The piano is easier to learn than the recorder.
B.Music education is necessary for all students.
C.The recorder plays an important role in music.
D.Nature is a rich source of inspiration for musicians.
3. What does Orton think of the recorder?
A.It needs to be improved.B.It is very difficult to play.
C.It deserves more attention.D.It is a top choice for students.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Recorder is Heading for ExtinctionB.Music is Increasingly Influencing the Youth
C.Technology Brings New Life to InstrumentsD.The UK Fights Against the Recorder’s Fate

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,研究表明,在孩童时期进行劳动且参与活动的男孩在长大后往往会生活得更快乐、更有成效。

9 . When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier, far happier.

These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”

Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly manifest. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working — at any age — is important. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

1. What do we know about John?
A.He enjoyed his career and marriage.B.He had few childhood playmates.
C.He received little love from his family.D.He was envied by others in his childhood.
2. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________.
A.a description of personal values and social values
B.an analysis of how work was related to competence
C.an example for parents’ expectations of their children
D.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
3. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by ________.
A.recording the boys’ effort in schoolB.evaluating the men’s mental health
C.comparing different sets of scoresD.measuring the men’s problem solving ability
4. What does the underlined word “manifest” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Common but abstract.B.Normal but annoying.
C.Clear and definite.D.Sudden and rapid.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要谈论了时光旅行是否能够成为可能。

10 . What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future? What if we could jump, loop and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased?

This ability would allow us to witness historic wonders, change decisions and see people from the past. We could right wrongs and stop wars from starting.

The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math. This math tries to make the dream of time travel come true.

The scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing. He called it “spacetime”. Einstein said that there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension.

Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on the earth or in space.

The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.

Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? The most important thing is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.

1. What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A.To explain time and space are connected.
B.To show people’s interest in time travel.

D.To make people believe time travel is possible.
2. Which of the following statements could Einstein agree with?
A.Time travel is possible in the future.
B.People can’t move faster than light.
C.Time travel is against scientific rules.
D.Spacetime is not a real thing in theory.
3. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?
A.The first science fiction story.B.Some tools used in time travel.
C.Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer.D.Different works about time travel.
4. What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel?
A.Cautious.B.Approving.C.Doubtful.D.Hopeful.
