4 . Every day, in all kinds of weather, thousands of men and women jog. Why has jogging — running slowly for long distances — become so popular? Most joggers begin because they hear it is a very good exercise. Jogging makes the heart stronger and helps people lose weight. It can also help them feel better about themselves.
Donald Robbins, who is forty two years old and works in an office, began jogging a few years ago because he felt he was too fat. At first he could only run about 100 yards. It took him three months to be able to run a mile. But two years later, he ran in a marathon over twenty six miles. Many joggers, like Donald Robbins, feel that if they can succeed in jogging, they can succeed in other things, and quite often this feeling helps them in their jobs.
Should you jog too? If you do, be sure to ask your doctor for advice. Jogging may be too much exercise for you.
Does jogging cost much? No, it costs almost nothing. But it is very important to have a good pair of shoes that are made especially for jogging. They protect your feet and legs from the shock of running on the hard surface.
How fast should you go? Jog with a friend and talk to each other as you run. If you have difficulty in talking, you're going too fast.
How far should you jog? Remember not to go too far too soon. In fact, you should walk, not run, the first few times. Then do some short jogs, but no more than what you can do comfortably. After that, increase your distance a quarter or half a mile every two weeks or so. Maybe in a few years, you can run in a marathon too.

6 . When Lew Alcindor was 13, and obviously still growing, a group of schools began offering him scholarships. The Alcindor decided to send their only child to Power Memorial Academy, a small school on Manhattan’s West Side.
At Power, Alcindor came under the control of Coach Jack Donohue, a strict young man who already gained his fames as one of the best coaches in the city. Donohue brought Alcindor along slowly. As a first-year student, the boy was not able to do much but wave his long skinny arms and shoot a basket now and then. But by the second year, when he was 15 years old and nearly 7 feet tall, Alcindor was quick and skilful enough to make the high school All-American team and to lead Power to an undefeated season.
From then on he simply got better. Some rival coaches (对方教练) used to take their teams quickly away from the floor before Power warmed up so that their players would not see him any sooner than they had to. Wearing size 16D shoes and sucking a chewing gum, Alcindor would loosen up by starting his leaping lay-ups (擦板球). Then he would casually shoot the ball with either hand, to the delight of the fans.
When reporters and photographers began to follow Alcindor closely, Donohue protected his boy firmly. He simply ordered Lew to talk to no member of the press, and this suited Lew fine. He was not comfortable talking to grown-ups, perhaps because he towered over them. Discouraged photographers began following him in secret as though he were an easily-frightened giraffe. Once after ducking into a subway to escape, Alcindor told a friend that it was all becoming like policemen and robbers. “People want you not for yourself,” Donohue warned him, “But because you’re a basketball player. Don’t forget that.”

It’s believed that unique chance is offered by sports to meet people with a sharing passion. I remembered being in primary school that everyone loved playing sports, no matter their gender. At lunchtime, girls and boys played soccer together and have a lot of fun. Therefore, as we entered our teenage years and grew old, only boys kept their love of sports. I think the situation can change only when more young girls stick to sports and begin to influence on others to take part in it. With female role model like Eileen Gu, I hope that this process of change is underway.
