3 . Are the Olympic Games outdated? That might seem like a strange question to ask. But it’s exactly what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is doing. At the 2012 London Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach noticed something. “You could see that the younger generation had no interest in the Games anymore. They were not there.”
In response, the IOC wants to make the Summer Olympics more youthful. But that isn’t as simple as just adding more sports. The Olympic program can’t continue to grow bigger: it would become too much for host cities to handle. For now, permanently adding new sports to the Olympics is out of the question.
The IOC’s solution is to continue to vote on the new program’s line-up and give host cities the opinion to add extra sports. The extra events would be included in that year’s Olympics only. This policy takes effect at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and 3x3 baseball are all making their Olympic debuts(首次露面)there.
Adding new sports, though, has sparked a lot of debate. Some sports have been pushing to be included in the Olympics for years but still haven’t made it. Meanwhile, newer sports like skateboarding or surfing are already getting the opportunity.
People are also wondering what makes up an Olympic sport. Paris, the future host of the 2024 Summer Olympics, has expressed interest in adding break-dancing. Some people would like to see e-sports at the Olympics. E-sports are especially important to consider because they are spreading like wildfire. President Bach stated video games with killing are not acceptable. One of the main principles of the Olympics is to encourage peace. At the moment, the future of e-sports is still uncertain.
What about the Winter Olympics? Not to worry, the IOC has already announced seven new events for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. But the Winter Olympics situation is a little different. The Winter Olympics have less than half the sports of the Summer Olympics, so they have room to grow.

6 . British triathletes (铁人三项运动员) Jess Learmont, and Georgia Taylor-Brown were disqualified from an Olympics qualification race in Tokyo on August 9,2019, because they crossed the finish line while holding hands.
The pair had a huge lead on the rest of their competitors in the event, and after surviving extreme temperatures during the race in the 2020 Olympics host city, they held hands as they finished. At first, Learmonth was considered the champion and Taylor-Brown the second place, but they technically broke competition rules and were punished for it.
As the BBC explained, International Triathlon Union (ITU) competition rule 2.11 states that “athletes who finish in an abnormal tie situation, where no effort to separate their finish times has been made, will be disqualified”.
Looking at the video, they don’t appear to be purposefully attempting to tie, and since Learmonth was the original winner, what does it matter? It looks like they’re both simply trying to support each other after finishing a race during which the temperature was pretty high that the running section was cut from 10 kilometers to five. Safety during a heat wave has been a serious concern, as 57 people in Japan have died since late July, according to Reuters, because of the extreme temperatures.
An appeal against the result was refused, the BBC reported, so Bermuda’s Flora Duffy was declared the champion with Italy’s Alice Betto promoted to second and Britain’s Vicky Holland to third.
1. Why did the two triathletes hold hands as they finished?A.To fight against the extreme heat. |

7 . The latest sports craze is not even a sport. According to a recent article, “e-sports” are attracting a large number of audience.
In e-sports, players and teams compete in popular video computer games such as Dota 2 and Ovenvatch. Fans fill arenas to watch the action live on huge television screens.
The games have gone way past kids playing against each other while sitting on a sofa at home. The International, a major competition for players of Dota 2, awarded $24 million in prizes, with the winner taking home almost $11 million. A recent e-sports competition attracted more than 80,000 fans to the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, China.
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of computer games. I know that some games can be educational, but I think too many kids spend too much time sitting in front of a screen shooting space aliens. I think it would be better if kids spent more time reading or playing real sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer.
And please don’t tell me that competitive gaming is real sport because it requires hand-eye coordination. According to my American Heritage Dictionary, a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill.” I don’t think anyone works up much of a sweat playing video games.
Too often, regular sports send kids a kind of message. Competition starts early, when lots of kids are not ready for the ups and downs of games. Tryouts and travel teams come next, giving too many kids the message they are “not good” at sports. So lots of kids quit sports and start playing more video games.
Maybe everyone in youth sports, including coaches, parents and kids, should think more about the advantages of real sports.
