1 . Here’s the list of skiers, who have won four consecutive (连续的) world championships: Nobody.
Well, nobody besides Mikaela Shiffrin, who did it last Saturday in Are, Sweden. The Colorado skier, still just 23, is the best story, really, of this sports winter in the slalom (障碍滑雪).
She pulled it off, despite an illness that challenged her breathing. Shiffrin told NBC after her win that her mother, Eileen, advised her before her second run: You don’t have to do this. But Shiffrin told herself what she had told herself many times before: “I just need 60 seconds.” So she did it, and she got it. Shiffrin is closing in on her third World Cup overall title. She’s ranked No. 1 on the planet in slalom.
In women’s skiing, the mountain is now Shiffrin’s. She’s earned it. Those two (and soon three) World Cup overalls; 56 World Cup individual victories; and, oh yeah, right, three Olympic medals, two of them gold. Shiffrin is already considered a serious threat to Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup victories, and Lindsey Vonn’s 82, though the 34-year-old surely would have collected more had she not suffered repeated injuries during her career. Of course, Shiffrin may wind up chasing someone else’s mark—Austria’s brilliant Marcel Hirscher, 29, now has 68 World Cup wins.
At the same time, Shiffrin loathes all the talk about the numbers and records. “People see the records and statistics. They are asking for more, more, more…it looks easy, but it isn’t. Nowhere close,” Shiffrin wrote. “What I see is training, sleepless nights, pain, doubt, delayed lights, canceled flights, lost luggage, expense, adventure, and some races mixed in there.”
That’s what happens when you’re as good as she is. But nobody’s been as good as she is. In a sense, Shiffrin is just getting started. It’s very possible she will be at her peak powers when the Winter Olympics arrive in Beijing in 2022.

5 . Experts are always advocating the health benefits of biking. And while the barrier to entry is low-pretty much all you need to know to start cycling is how to ride a bike itself-people often ask me if I have any tips for beginner bikers.
Below, a few things I've learned along the way that help make for a safer and more joyful ride:
Follow the rules of the road. Brake at yellow lights, stop for pedestrians and maintain a solid distance from cars.
helmet is actually more dangerous than traveling without one, but most research suggests otherwise. A full 98 percent of bike commuters (上班族)own a helmet, so you'll be in good company, anyway.
Make a playlist. Laws against riding with headphones vary from state to state, and it's never proper to listen to music in more than one ear. But cruising around to a soundtrack can be an amazing feeling, so consider buying a wireless speaker you can fix on your frame.
Know your rights. If you do end up getting into a collision, stay on the scene until the police come.
Find some friends. As great as it can be to bike alone, zipping down the street in a big group is an equally satisfying experience.
A.Be sure to get a helmet. |
B.It's necessary you give them an accurate report of the incident. |
C.Most cities have enough resources for the cycling community. |
D.Most of us will feel it obviously safer to ride on a bike than in a car. |
E.Then put together a list of your favorite tunes and get ready to enjoy them. |
F.Pushing to the limit not only gives bikers a bad reputation, but also a great danger. |
G.It' s comforting to know that whatever I need is nothing more than a bike ride away. |

7 . They train four hours a day, often waking up at 4:30 or 5 for before-school practices. Their evenings and weekends are eaten up by twice-weekly travel games. Every day is the same; there’s no break. No, these aren’t Olympic athletes; they’re kids.
The benefits of sports are obvious. So, it’s not surprising that, according to CNN, 41 million American children play competitive sports. But when does this become too much of a good thing?
Seven years ago, a survey in SportingKid magazine found 84 percent of athletes’ parents had observed belligerent behavior in other parents at games and that 80 percent had been targets of this behavior. What does this say about sports culture, and our culture as a whole? Some parents have become so crazy about their children’s winning that they don’t stop to think about what example they are setting.
If athletes are constantly surrounded by adults who scream at coaches and attack sports officials, they may think that this is acceptable behavior. They’ll try to win at all costs. In other words, they won’t know how to accept defeat, and learn from it.
The amount of time some athletes spend practicing can be dangerous. According to Sports Illustrated, over 3.5 million athletes younger than 15 suffered from a sports-related injury—that’s nearly one in ten! Many injuries cause permanent (永久的) damage if not treated.
So what can we do about this situation? Some argue that there is no problem, because sports has always been and will always be competitive. But did your grandparents spend hours each day practicing tennis or volleyball? No, they probably played with the neighborhood kids after school, not worrying about winning. All they wanted was to have fun. And that’s what we need to change in youth sports—focus on enjoyment.

The devices are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist, where they measure a person’s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of individuals. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health counseling (咨询) with experts to consider the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health counseling.
The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of electronic devices for weight control in place of “effective behavioral counseling for physical activity and diet. ”
The study involved 470 subjects aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖的). Over three fourths of the subjects were women. All the subjects were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly counseling, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups “showed significant improvements in fitness, physical activity, and diet,” with no major difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.
Jakicic said, “the study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to address America’s obesity. ” More information is needed, he added, to learn how to best use these devices to change “physical activity and diet behaviors” in adults who want to lose weight.

But sometimes our desire for gold medals can result in the sadness of failure. When Liu Xiang, China’s track hero, pulled out of the Beijing Olympics due to injury, he greatly disappointed many Chinese sports fans.
But things are different now. In the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, we saw a healthier and more lenient Chinese attitude toward the sportspeople, fully in line with the Olympic spirit.
China didn’t win any gold medals on the first day. But, instead of criticizing the athletes who failed to finish on top of the podium (领奖台), the majority of fans were happy with their efforts. “Reacting in the right way when an athlete misses out on gold shows the maturity of a person, and is also a challenge for a country to face up to in the process of development,” commented CRI.
Swimmer Fu Yuanhui won fans’ hearts, even if she only won a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke final. Her fans on her Sina Weibo micro blog have increased 100,000 to over 6 million. Many sports fans appreciated her straightforward character and attitude toward competition.
“The warm support from Internet users shows that public attitude toward competitive sport and the Olympics have gotten to a higher level,” said an article in the People’s Daily.
