1 . If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! With such busy lives, it can be hard to try and find the time to work out.     1     Working out in the morning provides additional benefits beyond being physically fit.

Your productivity is improved. Exercising makes you more awake and ready to handle whatever is ahead of you for the day.     2

Your metabolism(新陈代谢) gets a head start.     3     If you work out in the mornings, then you will be getting the calorie(卡路里) burning benefits for the whole day, not in your sleep.

4     Studies found that people who woke up early for exercise slept better than those who exercised in the evening. Exercise energizes you, so it is more difficult to relax and have a peaceful sleep when you are very excited.

5     If you work out bright and early in the morning, you will be more likely to stick to healthy food choices throughout the day. Who would want to ruin their good workout by eating junk food? You will want to continue to focus on positive choices.

2 . Climbing Without Ropes

The popular image of the mountain climber is of a person carefully climbing a steep cliff with a network of safety ropes, but it is not the only kind. Many climbers now enjoy bouldering. It’s more accessible and better for the environment.

What is bouldering?

Bouldering is a sport that involves climbing on, over, and around boulders up to approximately twenty feet above the ground. Participants employ no safety ropes.

Why boulder?

• improve your climbing skills by focusing on basics
• places to climb, such as climbing walls at gyms and parks, easy to find
• less time commitment to bouldering than to mountain climbing
• intellectual and physical enjoyment as one solves problems

Bouldering Terms

crimp: a very small handhold
foothold: a place where one may place a foot to aid in climbing boulder
jug: a very large handhold that is easy to use
problem: The path up a boulder is referred to as the “problem” that one must solve. The “solution” is the sequence of moves one makes up and over a boulder.

Here is an example of a climber addressing a bouldering problem.

Figure 1: The climber has two routes she could take, one to the left and one to the right. The left one appears easier because it has a jug within easy reach, but look what happens if she chooses that direction. She gets stuck on the rock and has to go back down. Sometimes that is even more difficult than going up.

Figure 2: The climber takes the one to the right this time. Using a foothold and placing her right hand in a crimp, she is able to lift herself up and locate other handholds. After only a few moves, she is able to throw her leg over the top of the boulder and pull herself up.

I saw a example of kindness during the Special Olympic Games in 1968. Kim, a severe disabled boy, took part in the 50-meter dash. He was racing against two other athlete who were in wheelchairs. In the race, Kim quickly moved ahead the other two. Ten meters from the finish line, he has turned to see how the others were doing. The other boy was pushed forward with his hands. The girl had turned her wheelchair around, but he was stuck against the wall. Kim stopped, went back, but pushed the girl across the finish line. The boy in the wheelchair won the race, and the girl comes in second place. Kim lost the race. However, the crowd, included me, didn’t think so, so we all gave him a cheer for his kindness.

4 . For many adolescents, “screen time” is almost a full-time job that could lead to obesity, diabetes and other health issues, a Canadian researcher says.

Adolescents now spend an average of six hours a day in front of some type of screen, whether it’s a television or computer screen or one of the many portable devices now popular with young people, studies done by Dr. Ian Michael Janssen show. “They spend more hours daily in front of a screen than they do in a classroom in a given year,” said Janssen, a researcher at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada. The result is a rise in obesity rates among adolescents. Unfortunately, fixing the problem isn’t as easy as simply cutting down screen time, Janssen cautions. “Decreasing screen time will not automatically increase physical activity levels,” said Janssen, Some active kids also spend a lot of time in front of television and computer screens, and some kids who have low screen times also have low levels of physical activity, he points out.

As well, screen time is not necessarily bad, Janssen said. “The tricky part is that children today need to be using computers,” he said. Computers are required for schoolwork, and technological skills are important for future job prospects. The quality of screen time matters too, along with the quantity---consider the negative health messages found in food advertising during children’s shows, he said. Ideally, children should aim for no more than two hours of recreational screen time a day.

Janssen’s real worry about the rise in childhood obesity rates is not that there are now rare cases of type diabetes in kids, where once there were none, but the health problems these children are likely to face in the future as adults, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.

1. Which one doesn’t belong to “screen time” according to the passage?
A.Watching TV.B.Surfing the Internet.
C.Seeing a film on an MP4.D.Making a telephone call.
2. In Janssen’s opinion, kids had better          to keep healthy.
A.lose weight.B.decrease screen time
C.take physical activitiesD.go on a diet
3. What’s the researcher’s attitude towards “screen time of adolescents" ?
A.Concerned.B.Passive.
C.Positive.D.Frightened.
4. We can learn from the passage that          .
A.many of the people having full-time jobs suffer from obesity and diabetes.
B.decreasing screen time can’t really solve the problem
C.children today most use computers to finish their school work
D.a new type of obesity in kids becomes Janssen’s real worry

5 . Some young Cambodians are learning a new sport — skateboarding. The country’s first skateboard park is located on the grounds of a local charity group at the edge of Phnom Penh, the capital.

Sports like Khmer boxing and soccer are wildly popular in Cambodia. But Chea, who has been skating for 6 months, says skating has already become his favorite sport.

The skaters are learning tricks like launching off a jump or half-pipe and flying through the air on their narrow wooden boards.

A non-governmental organization called Skateistan Cambodia organizes weekly programs at the park. Skateistan started its work in Afghanistan years ago. Rory Burke is working with the group which expanded to Cambodia last year.

Rory Burke points out, “Yeah, it’s definitely not a typical Cambodian pastime (消遣). And I think the idea of ‘why skateboarding’is that it’s not been done before here. We want to use skateboarding as something saying, ‘Hey,this is new, this is something different.’And that kind of itself becomes a little bit of hook. People see it and they think and they say, “Wow, ‘what is that?’,and they want to get involved. ”

Skateistan partners with local groups that work with young people. The park is on the grounds of the group known as PSE, where children attend school and learn a trade. There are almost one hundred twenty participants. They all come from troubled lives.

Seventeen-year-old Sang Rotha is a student at PSE. “Sometimes I don’t do well on subjects like math,”he says, “I feel bad when I find it hard to keep up with my lessons. So that is why I skateboard—to improve my bad feelings. ”

He says he began skateboarding more than a year ago. Before he started training, it seemed very easy. But it was very difficult to learn tricks, and he got hurt a lot from falling off.

Rory Burke says learning to deal with the difficulties is part of the lesson for these young skateboarders.

A.It is easy for young Cambodians to learn.
B.It is a good sport to help regain good feeling.

3. The underlined part a little bit of hook probably means ______.
A.something strangeB.something quite new
