1 . The Greatest show on Earth
The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sports in the world. Every four years, many countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honour in sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honour, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is in the spirit of the Olympics—to take part is what matters.
The Olympic Games always start in a bright colour and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first, for it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held—the host country—marches in last.
The runner with the Olympic torch (火炬) then enters the stadium and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath (宣誓) on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.
The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but there are a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in different sports, like riding, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.
More and more women are taking part in the Games. They first competed in 1900, in tennis and golf. Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912.But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as men.

3 . "Tennis is as good for the mind as it is for the body," says Dan Bloxham, head coach at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Family fun
Tennis is the perfect sport for the whole family to enjoy together. When playing with children, use red or orange tennis balls as these are softer than the classic yellow ones used at Wimbledon and will make the game easier and slower to play.
Super social
Instead of going to the pub, why not grab a bat and catch up with friends over a game of tennis? It’s one of the most social sports around and a great way to meet people.
Tennis is a huge challenge when it comes to fitness and uses all the muscles in your body as you run across the court, jump to reach high shots and race to the net.
Unlike cycling, which puts emphasis on the muscles in your legs, tennis uses the arms, legs, shoulders, and core, providing a total body workout.

4 . Ten minutes of gentle exercise can immediately change how certain parts of the brain communicate and coordinate(协调) with one another and improve memory function, according to an encouraging new study.
The scientists invited 36 students to the lab and had them sit quietly on a fixed bicycle for 10 minutes or, on a separate visit, pedal the bicycle at a pace so gentle that it barely raised their heart rates. It also was short, lasting for only 10 minutes. Immediately after each session of the sitting or slow pedaling, the students completed a computerized memory test during which they would see a brief picture of, for instance, a tree, followed by a variety of other images and then a new image of either the same tree or a similar one. The students would press buttons to show whether they thought each image was new or the same as an earlier shot. The test is difficult, since many of the images closely resemble one another. It requires rapid, skilful scanning recent memories to decide whether a picture is new or known. Next, the scientists had each student repeat this process — riding or sitting on the bike for 10 minutes and then completing memory testing — but the testing now took place inside an M.R.I. machine(磁共振成像仪) that scanned the young people’s brains while they responded to the images.
Then the researchers compared results. The effects of the exercise, undemanding as it was, were clear. The young people were better at remembering images after they had ridden the bike, especially when the images most closely resembled one another. In other words, the harder their memories had to strain(尽量使用), the better they performed after the exercise. The M.R.I. scans showed that memory parts of each student’s brain lit up at the same time with parts of the brain associated with learning, indicating that these physically separate parts of the brain were better connected now than when the students had not first exercised.

5 . With Wimbledon fortnight in full swing, all eyes are on the world’s most famous tennis tournament. And
Super social
It’s one of the most social sports around and a great way to meet people. What’s more, tennis is a sport men and women are encouraged to play together, unlike football or netball. And as it is a universal game, you could turn up at a club anywhere in the world and be able to play
Mind games
Tennis is a very technical game that engages the mind. Strength doesn’t necessarily mean you will win: a very physical young player may lose to a slower opponent who has better strategies.
No time? No problem. Not every tennis match needs to last as long as those on Centre Court. Instead, you can fit a game into your lunch hour. See who can be the first to get to 10 points or play a single set.

A recent study found that exercising outdoors was great for boosting energy levels while helping to reduce stress and low mood. Many of us have low levels of vitamin D and spending time outside is the best way to top up naturally.

Carl Diem, chairman of the organizing committee for the 1936 Berlin Games, proposed that the flame be lit in Greece and transported to Berlin via a torch relay. The idea was adopted(采纳) and continued at every Olympic Games since 1952.

Olympic motto
“Citius, altius, fortius”is a Latin phrase meaning“swifter, higher, stronger”,which Baron de Coubertin borrowed from Father Henri Dideon of Paris.Dideon was the headmaster of Arcueil College, and used the phrase to describe the athletic achievements(成就) of students at the school. He had previously been at the Albert Le Grand School, where the Latin words were carved in the stone above the main entrance.
