1 . Are you the type to run before breakfast in a morning? Working out on an empty stomach won't hurt you ——and it may actually help, depending on your goal.

Exercising before eating comes with the risk of feeling light-headed due to low blood sugar. You might feel tired or uneasy, and won't be able to work out as enthusiastically as you would have. A light amount of food is important for older adults over 55 to eat something before exercising — especially in the morning. But if your primary exercise goal is weight loss, exercising on an empty stomach may come with some promising benefits. There's some research to support the idea that working out in a fasted (禁食的)state can burn more fat than exercising in a fed state.

Working out on an empty stomach, however, may also not prove true for everyone. “Some people advocate for lasted exercise, but these people tend to be young and in amazing physical - shape,” says Douglas Paddon-Jones, a muscle physiology researcher and a professor of aging and health at the University of Texas Medical Branch. “They have no health problems, and what they're eating is super-high quality and carefully regulated.” On the other hand, working out in a fasted state without proper planning or professional oversight may run the risk of unhealthy body composition changes.

For people who aren't athletes, fueling up with food before a workout may be the best way to get the most fat-burning benefit. “You don't want to fill up; you just want to give your body a burst of energy to power your training period. After you exercise, drink some water ——but wait 60 to 90 minutes before eating, ”says Shivani Sahni, director of the nutrition program at Harvard University's Instituted for Aging Research. “You're trying to take advantage of your promoted metabolic (新陈代谢)rate post-exercise, so if you can go an hour or an hour and a half without eating, you'll maximize the fat-burning response,” says she.

4. Which word best describes the author's attitude to working out in a fasted state?

2 . In the gym of Croxteth Community School, Liverpool, 50 boys have a completed a course on boxing that is seen as a pilot for its return to state schools.

The Schools Amateur Boxing Association(SABA) has developed the Kid Gloves scheme, a non-contact version of sport where outside coaches teach a range of basic skills.

Chris Andrews, assistant secretary of the SABA, said the scheme was regarded as a way of changing the decline in boxing in state schools which began 25 years ago.

Safety fears and the poor image of professional boxing had accelerated the sport’s decline.but the Croxteth example was winning more supports. Mr. Andrews said the idea was particularly well received in the north-east of England.

“The interest shown so far has been enormous,"he said."I believe that boxing will come back into schools. A video has been produced to promote boxing in schools, and a bid has been made for a Sports Council grant(拨款).

He said,"I think there is a genuine recognition that there are aspects to boxing, if it is controlled and properly run, that really are very beneficial for children. This scheme takes away the dangers.I hope boxing can be promoted throughout the country in a more coordinated(协调)way."Such an idea horrifies such groups as the British Medical Association(BMA)and the British Safety Council, both critics of the idea.

Dr Jeffrey Cundy, the joint author of a BMA report on boxing, accepted that the scheme in Liverpool was non-contact, but he was still opposed. He said,"We feel that children should still not be introduced to boxing, because they will then be encouraged to take up an activity which is uniquely dangerous when actual contact takes place. We see this reintroduction in schools as an unhealthy development."

At the 800-pupil Croxteth school, Steve Stewart, head of PE, said boxing had helped to improve self-confidence, self-discipline, self-awareness and self-respect in those taking part. Everybody could get involved and, because all were starting from scratch, the improvements could be quickly seen. Next year, the course will be repeated and if possible girls will be allowed to take part following requests from them.

Gerry Thompson and Tony Curry, both 12, have enjoyed the boxing sessions and say they will both join a local boxing club." I thought it was brilliant,"said Gerry."I would rather be a professional boxer than a footballer. It's more enjoyable."

5 . Two summers ago, Spencer Seabrooke stepped off the edge of a cliff and out into the air. He was held up by a narrow band of fabric, three centimetres wide. The slackline (扁带) went over a deep channel on the top of Stawamus Chief Mountain in Squamish, Canada. The plan was to walk across without safety equipment. The ground was 290 metres below Seabrook’s feet. A fall meant death. The walking distance of 64 metres would mark a world record in free solo slacklining.

“You’re standing on nothing,” Seabrooke said at the time. “Everything inside your body is telling you this is wrong.” Several steps into the crossing, Seabrooke looked down. He lowered his body to steady himself and reached with his hands to hold the slackline. He suddenly turned over but hung on. He righted himself, let out a few screams, and stood again. He had walked the same slackline-with assistance-many times before. Finally, he crossed in four minutes and made it.

Slacklining became known in the early 1980s, around the rock climbing scene at Yosemite National Park in California. Scott Balcom, in 1985, was the first to walk on a 17-metre highline on Lost Arrow Spire, the valley bottom some 880 metres below. Charles “Chongo” Tucker, who has been living in Yosemite for a long time, was there in slacklining’s earliest days. Later, in 1994, he was one of the next people to walk the Lost Arrow Spire highline. “As scared as I was, it was as cool as anything I’ve ever done in my life,” said Tucker.

Seabrooke grew up in Peterborough, Canada, in love with the outdoors. He saw a documentary in 2012 that was about Andy Lewis, a slackliner and free solo pioneer who performed at the Super Bowl. Seabrooke was attracted and devoted himself to the sport. Three years later, he walked his record free solo highline on the Stawamus Chief.

The attention Seabrooke won led to work, everything from commercials to paid appearances at slackline festivals from Poland to China. “When you step out into the air, there’s something so clean about it,” said Seabrooke. “Height makes it real.”

1. What do we know about Seabrooke’s slacklining experience two years ago?
A.It was record-breaking.
B.It was done in Yosemite.
C.It involved materials for security.
D.It presented no challenge to him.
2. What did Seabrooke’s words in Paragraph 2 imply?
A.He was very confident.
B.He made a wrong decision.
C.Slacklining was a dangerous sport.
D.Slacklining was done without any support.
3. What was Tucker’s attitude to slacklining?
A.Negative.B.Ambiguous.
C.Frustrated.D.Favorable.
4. What encouraged Seabrooke to start slacklining?
A.The Super Bowl.
B.A slackline festival.
C.Its commercial promise.
D.A slackliner’s performance.

7 . The true Olympic spirit has been displayed by Canadian cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth, who helped Russian athlete Anton Gafarov with his broken ski during the Men’s Sprint Free Semifinals.

Gafarov’s start wasn't smooth. He fell three times, crashing early in the race and breaking his ski. It was clear that Gafarov was out of the race for the men's finals and wouldn't be able to compete for medals. It was about giving Gafarov some dignity so he didn't have to walk to the finish area,” Wadsworth said. “We help because we know everyone works so hard in our sport,” says Wadsworth, who was an Olympic skier for the S before becoming a coach. “Everyone wants fair results. It was a matter of allowing Gafarov to finish the race.”

Gafarov was thoughtful about his performance. “My fall cost me a broken ski and a pole,” said Anton Gafarov, adding that he decided to continue fighting for the finals despite all the difficulties.

10 . Do big sporting events make us do more sport?

I recently spent half a weekend sitting on the sofa watching the Davis Cup. I thought about going for a run, but I did not want to miss the rest of the match. Soon it was starting to get dark, so I did not bother. Whenever I watch tennis, I think how nice it would be to play it regularly. But I have been thinking that for almost 20 years without actually setting foot on a court. The evidence would suggest that I’m not the only one.

When a country or city bids to host an international sporting event, it often promises that more people will take up sports as a result. London was no exception. Tessa Jowell, who helped to secure the 2012 Olympics for London, said they would be the first to set challenging but achievable targets as a measure of their ambition: By 2012 two million more people would be physically active. And 60 percent of young people would be doing at least five hours of sports per week.

In the end it did not turn out quite like that. Just over one-third of people in Britain take part in sports once a week. A report on Olympic and Paralympic legacy has said that a big change in participation levels simply has not happened.

Why isn’t there a big increase in people taking part in sports after most sporting events? Perhaps it is a mistake to assume an automatic link between watching sports and playing it. While the games are on, they actually encourage people to do just the opposite — to spend whole sunny days not out playing sports, but inside sitting on the sofa with the curtains shut to stop the sun shining on the TV screen and spoiling the view. We don’t expect half the audience of a hit musical to apply to drama school the next day, yet we seem to expect it of sporting events.

We might have sat on the sofa doing an impression of Usain Bolt’s bow-and-arrow signature pose. But how many of us have been inspired by watching him sprint (短跑) 100 meters? The high-level performances on show only remind people that they could never match the elite athletes in their sporting achievements even if they trained full time.

Maybe participation in sports is not the right legacy to expect after a major sporting event. It’s not so much that the Olympics failed to get people to participate but rather that this was never going to be the result. The Olympics can do many things, but maybe this cannot necessarily be one of them.

④people are too busy to get into the habit of taking part in sports
