文章大意:本篇是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者缺乏运动天赋,自认为不是运动的料,但最终意识到锻炼与天赋无关。

5 . If this time last year you had told me that an exercise bike would save me, I’d have insisted you were wrong. I’d have protested that I’m not an athlete by any stretch. My coordination is lacking, my endurance is spotty (时好时坏的) and my speed is set squarely (干脆地) on tortoise.

In Grade 7, my physical education teacher watched me, eyebrow raised, as I tried to jump up and touch a marker on the wall. “You’re doing pretty well in my class,” he said, “for someone with no ability at all.”

In high school, I wasn’t suitable for a single team. I was bookish and slow, and that self-image (of being better suited to quiet reading and leisurely walks) remained with me for my entire life.

I discovered running in my 20s, and I enjoyed the feeling of quiet accomplishment — without the fear of letting down teammates. I tried yoga and enjoyed strength training classes, but I always prioritized mental pursuits over physical ones.

It was my mental wellness that finally forced me to rethink my fitness. This winter, I found myself bowing under the weight of exhaustion. I knew something had to change. I needed an outlet to release the tension of months of video conferencing, on-and-off solo parenting and virtual school. A run with my daughter wasn’t going to cut it.

I settled on an exercise bike with a big screen and the promise of life-changing results. Since early March, I’ve hardly missed a day on my bike. I’m not the fastest. But I’m finally learning that movement isn’t necessarily about athleticism (运动才能). More than anything, it’s about feeding your mind. It’s the feeling of accomplishment when you finish something hard outside of your comfort zone.

A handful of people will find glory in athleticism. For the rest of us, the reward is more personal: better sleep, improved mood and boosted confidence. I’m not destined (注定的) for the Olympics. But this was never about ability. That’s what I wish my gym teacher had told me.

If only he’d said, “You’re doing really well in my class. Look at your determination.”

1. Why didn’t the author exercise before her 20s?
A.She had no athletic talent.
B.She thought little of physical pursuits.
C.She focused on academic performance.
D.She wasn’t accepted by a single sports team.
2. What motivated the author to transfer her attention to physical exercises?
A.Her fear of getting sick.
B.Her daughter’s suggestions.
C.Her longing to let go of pressure.
D.Her desire to get out of her comfort zone.
3. What happened after the author rode her exercise bike?
A.She discovered her athleticism.
B.She quickly improved her cycling skills.
C.She gained a sense of accomplishment.
D.She was praised by her gym teacher.
4. What does the author think is most important about exercise?
A.Ability.B.Confidence.C.Strength.D.Strong will.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了雪橇运动在瑞士的发展。

6 . Tobogganing, or sledding (雪橇), likely comes before the colonization of North America. Records show that Canada’s First Peoples used small sleds to transport their belongings and food between camps, Raymond Flower writes in The History of Skiing and Other Winter Sports. But modern-day sled races can trace their origins back to the Swiss Alps in the late 1800s when British tourists decided to race in wooden luges (a sled used by one person) that locals had used to travel through snow. The origin is debatable in snowy northern New York, however, where there $ evidence that Albany held bobsled (a sled used by two or more people) races as early as 1885.

Wherever they began, sled races quickly became popular. The famous Cresta Run, named after the Swiss town near the base of its course, was built in 1885 using snowbanks. The first organized competition was in 1898, hosted by the first bobsled club in nearby St.Moritz (a city in Switzerland). It was then that sledding began to separate from the luge to include two new sports: bob sledding, and skeleton sledding (俯式雪橇).

Cresta Run is considered the birthplace of the skeleton, a particularly daring form of sledding. Unlike the luge, where competitors ride feet-first on a sled with metal runners, the skeleton sledding is a steel sled with a slim appearance. Riders lie down on the sled headfirst, then drop suddenly down an ice track. Bobsledding, meanwhile, involves teams of two to four in which the person in front controls directions and the player in back brakes when needed. It earned its name after competitors started swinging back and forth to speed up the sled.

Bobsledding initially overtook skeleton sledding in popularity, becoming one of a handful of sports played at the first Winter Games in 1924. The skeleton sledding was limited to the Cresta Run for decades because other bob runs around the world were not built for the steel skeleton sled. But in the 1970s, adjustments were made to both the skeleton and bob runs in order to include the event at future winter games.

1. What can we infer about Raymond Flower?
A.He is a writer.
B.He is good at sledding.
C.He invented the sledding race.
D.He set the first record of sledding.
2. How does skeleton sledding differ from the luge?
A.Skeleton sledding runs on metal runners.
B.Skeleton sledding doesn’t have back brakes.
C.Riders on Skeleton sledding sled with their feet.
D.Skeleton sledding needs players to lie down on it headfirst.
3. What limited the popularity of skeleton sledding?
A.Its special shape.
B.Its speed.
C.Its steel runners.
D.Its unsuitable adjustments.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Why is sledding so popular?
B.How did sledding develop in Switzerland?
C.What are sledding adventures about?
D.How did people kill time in North America?

8 . Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing.     1     It may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment.

Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity from which men get their relaxation.

Mountaineering is a sport but not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people.     2

If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”.     3     There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man.     4     His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve skills year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties.     5     They may need more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

A.We should be mistaken in this.
B.He has to fight the forces of nature.
C.Teams compete against each other.
D.Climbing high mountains needs patience, skills and strength.
E.Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
F.It may be a game of some kind football, hockey, golf, or tennis.
G.But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps.

10 . Like a lot of folks, I started working out a lot during the pandemic. But as I noticed my body more often, I thought the body I was seeing in the mirror wasn’t changing enough.    1    . We talked to experts for tips on how to keep comfortable with your body. Here's what they had to say.

    2

Instead of focusing on aesthetic(美学的)changes, consider how exercising can improve your quality of life. Study after study shows exercise is good for your physical health, as well as your mental health. Exercise can help lower your risk of heart disease.    3    . Howell, the head of fitness at Reebok, says the process of getting into shape isn’t just a physical journey but a mental and emotional one as well.

Try not to compare yourself-or your progress-to others

If you find yourself constantly comparing your body to other bodies, remember that we're all built differently. “We all do different things for a living, I don’t have any kids...You might have four or five kids at home. There are so many variables,” says Howell.

Figure out a way to move your body in an easy way
