1 . The United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) won the Nobel Peace Prize on October 9, 2020. The Nobel Committee (委员会) is recognizing the group for its efforts to fight hunger and improve conditions for peace in areas affected by wars. The World Food Program has long been offering help to some of the world’s most troubled places. For example, the WFP created a special service that successfully kept providing help all over the world after the outbreak of COVID-19 stopped nearly all international flights.

Berit, chairwoman of the Nobel Committee, said on Friday, “With this year’s award, the committee wishes to turn the eyes of the world to the millions of people who suffer from or face the problem of hunger.” In announcing the award, the Nobel committee said “At present, food is the best vaccine (疫苗) against COVID-19.” And it added, “There will be 265 million people going hungry within a year, so of course this is also a call to the international community to offer enough fund to the World Food Program.”

Dan Smith, a director, said the Nobel committee had wanted to send a message of both hope and support for worldwide group work among countries “Hunger, just like climate change and the present COVID-19, is a world problem that can only be properly addressed by all countries working together,” he told Reuters, a British news agency.

3 . Look up in the sky. See that French poodle? Before your eyes it morphs into an elephant. A few seconds later, it becomes the profile of Taylor Swift floating by. Cloud-watching has captured our imaginations since we were children. Many people even have found the International Cloud Appreciation Society.

In 2003 Gavin Pretor-Pinney was living in Rome while on holiday. After seven months glancing into the heavens at the mostly clear blue Roman skies, he discovered he missed the constantly changing cloud formations that were an everyday event in his native United Kingdom. He returned home and was engrossed in learning about clouds. The subject dominated his conversation for a year. Then a friend invited him to speak about clouds at a small literary festival. Pretor-Pinney titled his presentation "The Inaugural Lecture of the Cloud Appreciation Society." Afterward, he had to inform audience members who wanted to join the society that it did not exist. A few months later he launched a website, and the society was born. Five years ago it became his full-time occupation.

Today, the Cloud Appreciation Society enjoys a membership of more than 50,000 people scattered in 120 countries, all united through their appreciation of celestial mist. It is divided into local groups that include a chapter in St. Louis, and another in central Missouri. Illinois cloud spotter groups are near Chicago.

Pretor-Pinney thinks of the society as reconnecting people with their early relationship to the sky as children finding images in the clouds. "Clouds are for dreams, and a deep thinking of them benefits the soul. If you consider the shapes you see in clouds, it will save you money on psychoanalysis bills," Pretor-Pinney jokes.

In a positive Ted Talk about the Cloud Appreciation Society accessible on the Internet, Pretor-Pinney points out that clouds are common to everyone no matter where they are in the world. They are the most egalitarian (平等主义者) of nature's displays, because people all have a fantastic view of the sky.

5 . When Vanessa Garrison and T. Morgan Dixon met—back when they were both college students in L.A.—they realized how different they actually were. For one, Dixon grew up athletic, and Garrison…did not., “My family spent almost every weekend watching horse racing at the track. In high school, I participated in one trail run where I came in dead last—they had to go out there to tell me it was over and bring me back.” says Garrison.

But Garrison and Dixon were aligned in many other ways—for instance, as fans of poet Nikki Giovanni and rapper Tupac Shakur. And most important, they were connected by a passion for community building and Black women’s health. “We were struggling with things like how to have so-called leisure time or self-care and not feel guilty about it when your families have worked themselves to the bone to provide for you,” says Garrison. “I grew up in such a poor household that pleasure and joy seemed like luxuries,” says Dixon. “It’ s no wonder that nearly two out of three Black women participate in little leisure-time physical activity.”

Garrison and Dixon’s many conversations led them, in 2010, to found GirlTrek, now the country’ s largest public-health nonprofit aimed at African American women and girls.

Since its inception, more than 160000 women have taken the “GirlTrek pledge,” in which they vow to make time for themselves and walk in their neighborhoods for at least 30 minutes a day—and encourage their friends and loved ones to follow suit. “Walking is a proven medical intervention, and we know that loneliness and isolation can be as deadly as cigarette smoking,” says Dixon. “So why not have a physical fitness intervention that also creates community?”

The organization even aims to increase awareness of their historical foremothers:Last March, ten GirlTrek national staffers walked 100 miles of the Underground Railroad, which was used by black slaves to escape into free states and Canada. “If Harriet Tubman could walk her way to freedom, then surely we can walk our way to better health.” Garrison adds.

A.He likes sports.B.He is weaker contrary to Dixon.

B.Because parents don’t allow their children to play social activities.
C.Because most of them need to struggle for life continuously.
D.Because they are easier to be sick because of dirty environment.
3. What’ s the purpose of GirlTrek Pledge?
A.To make people meet more new friends.
B.To prevent people smoking cigarettes.
C.To spare enough time to take physical exercise.

8 . Those accustomed to browsing (浏览) through thousands of books in large bookstores may find Japan's Morioka Shoten a little strange. That's because this tiny bookstore that is located in Ginza, Tokyo sells only a single book at a time.

Opened in May 2015, Morioka Shoten is the brainchild (脑力劳动成果;发明;主意) of Yoshiyuki Morioka. He began his career as a bookstore clerk in Tokyo's Kanda district before branching out into opening his own store. It was here while organizing book reading and signing that he realized that customers usually came into the store with one title in mind. Morioka began to wonder if a store could exist by selling multiple copies of just one single book. In November 2014, he partnered Masamichi Toyama to establish a unique bookstore with the philosophy of "a single room with a single book".

The selections that are picked by Morioka change weekly and vary widely to attract customers with different interests. Recent choices include The True Deceiver, an award-winning Swedish novel by Tove Jansson, Hans Andersen's fairy tales, and a collection of Karl Blossfeldt's photography of plants. Morioka has also selected books written by a famous Japanese author Mimei Ogawa.

To highlight his only offering, Morioka often uses clever tricks. For example, when selling a book about flowers, the storekeeper decorates his shop with the ones that have been mentioned in the book. He also encourages authors to hold talks and discussions so they can connect with customers. Morioka says his goal is to let customers experience being inside a book, not just a bookstore.

Risky as the idea might seem, things appear to be going well. The storekeeper says he has sold over 2,100 books. Things can get better given that his bookstore is becoming increasingly popular not just among the locals but also visitors from other countries.

1. What inspired Morioka to open such a bookstore?
A.A Swedish novelB.His present partner
C.A bookstore clerkD.His working experience
2. Why is Morioka Shoten unique?
A.It is popular with foreignersB.It sells books of different topics
C.It is decorated with colorful flowersD.It sells various copies of a book in a week
3. Why does Morioka encourage authors to hold talks?
A.To introduce his bookstoreB.To advocate his philosophy
C.To make books better understoodD.To help readers connect with each other
4. What's the author’s opinion about the bookstore's future?
A.RiskyB.Promising
C.UnpredictableD.Hopeless.
