文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了大多数企业组织在环境保护方面践行的社会责任,为小型企业组织提供了改变环境的思路和方法。

4 . The Power of Small: How Smaller Organizations Can Make a Difference in the Environment

Corporate social responsibility initiatives are in the consciousness of most large, medium-sized or small organizations.

1     As part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives, companies often take part in adopt-a-tree activities, wherein employees either actively participate in the tree planting campaigns, or trees are adopted and taken care of on behalf of employees, or even as corporate gifts.

In addition to other environmental initiatives, businesses can also foster environmentally sustainable work practices to contribute to the environment actively and consciously. This is something that businesses of any size, small or big, can adopt.     2     In order to do this, businesses can work towards streamlining their manufacturing processes. Production efforts in particular could be reworked in a way that uses fewer materials, or they are extracted and used in a way that significantly reduces the impact of those existing processes on the environment.

While smaller organizations face different challenges both from business, as well as operations point of view, efforts for ecological conservation or preserving environmental health don’t have to be restricted to larger firms only.

Helping the environment does not have to be expensive, even if it is done on a corporate scale! While larger organizations do their bit for environment conservation, small businesses need not be far behind. Each one can promote healthy environmental practices and suggest improvements in the workplace while fostering an attitude that understands climate change, its impacts, and actively works towards eradicating them.     3

Programmes that help the environment, which small businesses could partake in, could range from even something as small to understanding basic waste and garbage, to actively participating in cleaning drives.     4

A.EcoMatcher is one such organization that encourages companies to promote corporate tree planting and promote tree gifting as rewards.
B.Regardless of the service or product offered by an organization, they can adopt sustainable development goals and targets.
C.Adopt-a-tree programmes are growing in popularity as the world becomes increasingly cognizant of the ill effects of rapidly increasing climate change.
D.Businesses can make a positive environmental impact in many ways.
E.No gesture is too small to help the environment; it is by the combination of many such small gestures that a significant impact is made.
F.This practice not only creates a positive environment but makes it easier for employees engaged in the job of waste segregation to feel involved.

7 . In a recent meeting, the word “culture” came up 27 times in 90 minutes. Business leaders all believe a strong organizational culture is _________ to success, yet culture tends to feel like some magic force that few know how to control. In our study, we find that answering the following three questions can help transform culture from a mystery to a (n) _________:

How does culture drive performance? After analyzing 50 major companies, we conclude: _________ we work determines how well we work. The companies most famous for their cultures maximize the positive motives(动机), while minimizing the negative ones. Some motives tend to _________ performance. That is because people are no longer thinking about work but the disappointment, or the _________, or why they’re bothering to do it. They don’t _________ the quality of the work itself. By contrast, a high-performing _________ always maximizes creating total motivation.

What is culture worth? While it is _________ to measure whether someone is creative, it’s relatively easy to calculate total motivation of an organization. For example, all airline companies share the same terminals and use the same planes, but customer satisfaction _________ widely across airlines. We found that an airline’s culture closely __________ customer satisfaction. __________, great cultures produced better customer outcomes, and in turn generated more profits.

What elements in an organization __________ motivation? By surveying, we found the most sensitive element is whether an organization can allow an employee to __________ with its mission and behavioral code. For example, An executive of Walmart, told us that in monthly meetings he always emphasized how much Walmart had saved for the __________ — rather than how much money Walmart had made.

A great culture is not easy to build. Leaders have to treat culture building as an engineering project, not a __________ one.

8 . Despite the fact that there were a lot of great Hong Kong movies and singers in the 1990s, Hong Kong has been called a cultural desert for quite a long time.

But since the handover, the situation has changed. Currently known as one of the world’s top international financial centers, Hong Kong also wants to achieve the status of a global art center.

Galleries from the Chinese mainland began to come to Hong Kong in 2008. After three years, international galleries also set their sights on Hong Kong. Within three months, 10 international galleries opened locations.

After Art Basel, an international art fair, launched in Hong Kong in 2013, the region became one of the three global art markets, after New York and London. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍地球和空间基金会的作用。

9 . There are many interconnected links between Earth and space exploration. The Earth and Space Foundation (基金会), was founded for the purposes of developing such links by field research and direct practical action.

Projects that have been supported by the Foundation include environmental projects using technologies of space exploration: satellite communications, GPS, remote sensing, advanced materials and power sources. For example, the people of Guatemala are faced with the loss of the forests on which their livelihood depends. Rather than opposing economic progress and trying to save the forests on their own strengths, one new approach is to improve the value of the forests. The Foundation has previously given a fund to a group of explorers that used remote sensing to plan eco-tourism routes in the forests of Guatemala, thus bringing income to the local populations through tourism. This novel approach is now making the protection of the forests a reasonable economic decision.

The Foundation funds many archaeological (考古学的) field projects, which reflect the contributions of the early civilization to astronomy (天文学) and space sciences. The Foundation helped fund a large archaeology project by the Society for Syrian Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles. It worked with the Syrian government and used GPS and satellite imagery to locate banks of earth, or ‘tels’, containing treasures and relics of ancient civilizations. These collections are being used to build a better picture of the nature of the civilizations that gave birth to astronomy.

Field research also applies the Earth’s environmental and biological resources to the human exploration and settlement of space. This may include the use of remote environments on Earth, as well as physiological and psychological studies in harsh environments. In one research project, the Foundation gave financial support to an international caving expedition to study the psychology of explorers in caves in Mexico for a period of time. The results of the tests were used by the NASA Johnson Space Center to improve US astronaut selection standard. Besides, a Mars-like programme has been launched in one area in the Arctic, whose environment is similar to the Mars’, to test communications and exploration technologies in preparation for the human exploration of Mars.

1. What do we know about the novel approach in the Guatemala project?
A.It opposed the development of economy.
B.It reduced the impact of tourists on the forests.
C.It showed that preserving the forests can be profitable.
D.It gave the Foundation greater control over the forests.
2. Why were GPS and satellite imagery used in the Syrian project?
A.To explore land that is hard to reach.B.To find ancient items buried under the earth.
C.To limit the impact of archaeological activity.D.To rebuild the picture of all the civilizations.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The space environment is as tough as the environment on Earth.
B.It is unlikely to test the technologies needed to explore Mars on Earth.
C.The length of time in caves certainly leads to the best astronaut selection standard.
D.Space-like environments on Earth may help us understand how to operate in the space.
4. What is the writer’s purpose in the passage?
A.To encourage people to explore the space.B.To introduce the function of the Foundation.
C.To persuade people to study the caves.D.To show the importance of space exploration.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了未诊断疾病网络(UDN)的成立背景和它取得的进展。

10 . Elizabeth wouldn’t walk or talk as an infant. Angela’s left leg was so enlarged that it hurt to stand. Emma needed a breathing machine just to sleep. Their suffering may take different forms, but their stories share a common thread: Neither they nor their families knew what was actually causing these issues.

Those cases are precisely where the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) steps in. Established in 2008, the UDN’s mission is to provide answers for patients with diseases that doctors are unable to diagnose. Anyone can apply to the program and the UDN works hard to screen every application it receives.

Today, the UDN covers 12 clinical sites around the country, and has evaluated over 1,400 patients. More than 400 of those patients have received a diagnosis thanks to the UDN. In some of these cases, the network is able to match a patient with an already known condition. In others, UDN researchers must work to describe an entirely new disease and enter it into the medical dictionary. The program has added at least 25 entirely new diseases in this way. Additionally, the UDN covers the cost of the tests, meaning patients aren’t burdened with crushing medical debt.

“I think they’ve really advanced and changed the whole model for how we approach many of these illnesses, ” says Anne Pariser, director of the Office of Rare Diseases Research. She says the UDN’s multidisciplinary (多门学科的) approach—bringing different specialists together to talk about challenging cases—has helped advance the field of rare disease research, especially when it comes to genetic diseases.

Living with a disease without a name can be its own kind of suffering. “You grow up feeling like, I’m in this, crazy, all by myself, and no one really understands me, ” says Angela Moon, a UDN participant. For patients like her, the UDN offers hope for treatment, but also for finally being seen.

1. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.
A.introduce the background for the UDN’s foundingB.describe the symptoms of rare diseases
C.arouse the readers’ interest in the UDND.inform us of the sufferings of some patients
2. The third paragraph mainly talks about ______.
A.the model the UDN is run nationwideB.the challenges and risks the UDN is facing
C.the reasons why the UDN gains popularityD.the achievements the UDN has made so far
3. What can be inferred about the UDN’s work model?
A.It helps spread the knowledge of rare diseases.
B.It stresses cooperation between different specialists.
C.It is specifically designed to deal with genetic diseases.
D.It attaches importance to participants’ privacy.
4. What can be learned about Angela Moon?
A.She has received treatment now.B.She failed to identify with others.
C.She used to live in despair.D.There must be a cure for her condition.
