1 . Next week, as millions of families gather for their Thanksgiving feasts (大餐), many other Americans will go without. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 12 million households _________ enough food for everyone in their family at some time during the year — including _________.

Hunger is surprisingly widespread in our country — one of the world’s wealthiest — yet the government estimates that we waste almost 100 billion pounds of food each year, more than one-quarter of our total supply.

Reducing this improper distribution of _________ is a goal of America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Last year, it _________ nearly 2 billion pounds of food to more than 23 million people in need.

America’s Second Harvest is a network of 214 inter-connected food banks and other organizations that _________ food from growers, processors, grocery stores and restaurants. _________, the network distributes food to some 50,000 soup kitchens (施食处), homeless _________ and old people’s centers in every county of every state.

A great deal of work is involved in distributing tons of food from thousands of _________ to thousands of small, non-profit organizations. Until a few years ago, America’s Second Harvest lacked any _________ way to manage their inventory (存货). Without accurate and timely information, soup kitchens were sometimes empty while food was left to __________ in loading places.

In 2000, America’s Second Harvest began to use a new inventory and financial-management system — Ceres. It is a __________ designed specifically for hunger-relief operations. It is used by more than 100 America’s Second Harvest organizations to __________ food from donation to distribution.

Ceres has helped __________ the spoiling of food and improve distribution. An evaluation found that the software streamlined (精简) food banks’ operations by 23 percent in the first year alone.

With more accurate and timely reports, Ceres saves time, frees staff members to focus on finding new donors, and __________ more efficient use of donations.

Hunger in America remains a(n) __________ social problem. Technology alone cannot solve it. But in the hands of organizations such as America’s Second Harvest, it is a powerful tool that is helping to make a difference — and helping more Americans to join in the feast.

2 . The Red Cross is known for carrying out some of the most heroic acts in the world. There are Red Cross societies in 190 countries all over the world. Their task is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of sudden serious situations by organizing volunteers and the people who want to donate(捐献).

In 1860, Swiss businessman and social activist, Jean Henri Dunant, saw the effects of war, and countries not prepared or able to deal with the suffering of those who had been injured in the Battle of Solferino during the second War of Italian Independence. Dunant organized a group of volunteers to help bring water and food to the injured, to help with medical treatment, or to write letters to the families of those who were dying. After that moment, he knew that more had to be done, and he wrote the book, A Memory of Solferino, which encouraged the public to create an organization which would help the wounded. His writing encouraged more people to support him in creating the International Federation of the Red Cross. And in 1863, International Committee of the Red Cross was founded.

The modern-day Red Cross does more than nursing soldiers during wartime. The group began to devote itself largely to disaster relief (灾难救援) and epidemic (流行病) treatment. It has achieved even greater service in humanitarian (人道主义的) programs that serve continuously in both peace and war.

One of the easiest ways you can help the Red Cross is to make sure you are able to donate blood and make an appointment at the Red Cross website. But, donating blood isn’t the only way you can help out —the Red Cross also encourages you to donate your time if you can, along with other things the modern-day Red Cross wants you to know.

1. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Reduce.B.Report.
C.Express.D.Find.
2. Why did Dunant write A Memory of Solferino?
A.To make more people know the Red Cross.
B.To ask more people to help the wounded.
C.To let people see the cruelty of wars.
D.To call on people to stop wars.
3. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To introduce the Red Cross website.
B.To explain the Red Cross’s future work.
C.To show how the Red Cross helps needy people.
D.To encourage people to offer help to the Red Cross.

3 . 阅读短文, 按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

I remember the day shyness took over my life. I was 14 and having a French lesson The teacher told us to record ourselves speaking about a holiday. Perfect! I recorded myself with confidence. Then, I pressed "play" to listen back. All I heard was a little kid talking. My immediate reaction was to assume I was listening to someone else's recording. But that was my voice. I realised there was something strange about me.

My little voice has made me feel really shy. And my shyness has caused me to avoid attending events, not make important connections, and keep my ideas to myself. As a shy person, working from home, hiding behind my computer was brilliant. But the more time I spent hidden away, the more my comfort zone shrank(缩小). Everyday interactions, like ordering a coffee, became increasingly awkward and uncomfortable.

And then, one day I was at a big conference and it suddenly hit me like lightning. All speakers were confident, comfortable with being seen. There were no quieter voices. But the trouble is, if the loud voices are the only ones you hear, we quiet people feel even more alienated(疏远的)。 The world needs a mixture of personalities. Success is not just about who can shout the loudest. The world needs quieter people, too. That day I chose to stop hiding and embrace my shyness. No more feeling like I needed to change who I am in order to succeed. No more living a small life.

Then I created the Shy and Mighty Society, a space for shy people like me to shine, and in the process of helping others, I could also push myself forward, bit by bit. Now, I'm happy to tell people I feel shy. I'm not ashamed any more. And I know that I’m not alone.

1. Why did the author feel strange about herself after listening to the recording? (no more than 10 words)
2. What is the main idea of Para.2? (no more than 10 words
3. What does the underlined word in Para.3 mean? (1 word)
4. Why did the author create the Shy and Mighty Society? (no more than 10 words)
5. Suppose you are in charge of the Shy and Mighty Society, what will you do to help other shy people? And why? (no more than 20 words)

4 . Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murders of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.

One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, as the losers disagreed with the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should have been allowed and that their opponents' victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said: “This isn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛) of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable(有争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).

1. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have _______.
A.created goodwill between the nations
B.hardly showed any international friendship
C.caused only false national pride
D.led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred
2. What did the manager mean by saying, “...Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”?
A.Hockey and the Federation are ruined by the unfair decisions.
B.His team would no longer take part in international games.
C.There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.
D.The Federation should be ended.
3. Which statement best summarizes this passage?
A.Athletes should compete as individuals.
B.Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.
C.Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.
D.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

5 . Juliette Brindak started a social networking site for teens when she was 16, and it’s doing better than ever. Miss O And Friends has 10 million monthly visits, a twenty-fold increase from its start in 2005. It’s also worth around $15 million, according to the supporting company Procter & Gamble.

When she was ten, Brindak drew characters for a set of five friends she called “Cool Girls,” who were all inspired by real-life girls. The main cool girl, Miss O, represents her younger sister Olivia. The set of “Cool Girls” would in the end become Miss O And Friends. In the beginning, like many start-ups, Brindak reached out to family members and friends for support in money. Her mother, a graphic (绘画的) designer, brought her drawings to life while her father, who has a background in business, offered help in the basic things of creating the company.

The site became popular and was the third largest girls-only website in 2011, according to Inc Magazine. Now, at 30, Brindak isn’t in tune with what teen girls are looking for, so she uses the site as a route to understand their needs. Through polls, quizzes, and the “Girl2GirlWall”, Brindak could keep herself updated.

Through high school and college, the site has continued to improve. When it was originally started, there was little more than a few attractive graphics. “There was a homepage, which had the five Miss O characters and simple flash animations,” Brindak says. “There was hardly anything to it, but it was definitely a start.” Now the site is proud of having message boards, quizzes, games, music, and more.

“I was able to learn so much about cultures around the world and also become informed and aware of different ways that I can reach out to women.” Brindak says. “The goal for the site was, and still is, to help young girls build confidence and pride in themselves,” “We started off with a business plan that we have used as our guide, but that business plan is always changing. We continue to find new ways to attract girls, and create new markets that are suitable for Miss O and out community.”

7 . You may have heard of the Red Cross. It is an organization that helps people who are in need. It may be because of a flood, a war or an earthquake. No matter how bad the situation is, it will always be there to help! But it hasn’t always been this way. For example, in the United States, but for the passion (热情) of a woman named Clara Barton, the American Red Cross may have never been formed!

When Clara was young, she was very shy. One day when she was 11 years old, her elder brother, David, was badly injured. He was ill for two years. Clara cared for him the whole time. 8 . Many years ago, my mother read from the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey to me. I remember as if it were yesterday, hearing her voice at my side on a cold wintry night. My mother’s voice changed my world.

Long before I could read on my own, she shared with me the strength and beauty of McCloskey’s language a story of a little girl and her mother out in nature, co-existing with a mother bear and her own baby. The power of the story, of language and of my mother all came together. And it happened many times after that, over and over. The read aloud made me a reader.

Years later, I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom. His life, so far, had not been easy. His childhood was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, he had an idea that started something big.

What he said was this: “Mrs. Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud” Therefore, my organization, LitWorld, created a grassroots movement World Read Aloud Day in 2010 to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day.

Since the day he shared that good idea with us, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world. This year we are over 600 cities strong, a number that is growing every day.

Children who grow up as readers become engaged citizens of the global world, and every child deserves the right to read. When I say that reading aloud will change the world, I know it sounds simple. But one of the many great things about giving kids access to the power of stories and sharing them together is that it is simple. It is also cheap and easily done. And the impact is huge.

1. How did the author’s parent change her life?
A.By reading aloud to her.
B.By listening to her reading.
C.By buying many books for her.
D.By encouraging her to read aloud.
2. According to Paragraph 3, the author was probably the little boy’s       .
A.motherB.teacher
C.best friendD.favorite writer
3. What does the small child’s idea in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.To start a holiday.B.To reduce poverty.
C.To found LitWorld.D.To overcome loneliness.
4. What can we know about World Read Aloud Day from Paragraph 5?
A.Its origin.B.Its future.
C.Its purpose.D.Its development.
5. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Sticking to reading isn’t easy.
B.Reading gives a high rate of return.
C.Reading aloud isn’t actually simple.
D.Kids should try to change the world.

10 . Time for a Brainstorm

A brainstorm is a session where a small group of people come together to solve a problem. People voice spontaneous ideas, sometimes just shouting, and a note-taker writes them all down.    1    By getting different ideas out there, ideas are said to bounce off each other and even can help solve the problem at hand. Brainstorming is often a group exercise but individuals can also conduct personal brainstorms.

2    He defined it as using the brain to storm a creative problem and do so in commando (突击队)fashion, with each stormer attacking the same objective. According to him,, it was easier to tone down a wild idea than think up a new one. He placed importance on the collection of as many ideas as possible and dismissed scientific thinking.

Brainstorming has become one of the most popular ways to solve problems and hold discussion in schools and businesses. Many students brainstorm for a group assignment or even for a personal essay. Sarah Grace, 24, is an Australian marketing analyst and uses brainstorming during all her creative duties. She thinks brainstorming is the best way to work as a team. The sessions get everyone on the same page, everyone moving together and with a clear understanding about the foundations of an event or idea.    3    .

However, a big problem with brainstorming is creating a mess that leads people further away from a solution.     4     If you don’t have a strong moderator or leader of the brainstorm, can go really off track, and people just start discussing something totally different. Brainstorming can sometimes confuse the human brain.    5     If you brainstorm too much and your page is filled up with all the messy links, you can paint yourself into a bit of comer and get trapped with ideas.

You need to move past brainstorming as soon as you have something workable.

A.The ideas can be smart, strange or crazy.
B.It is caused by a lack of direction from a leader.
C.Brainstorming really helps her organize her thoughts.
D.Brainstorming really is the best way to build team spirit.
E.It can open too many doors and not suggest a clear direction.
F.Brainstorms were popularized in the 1940s by American advertising boss Alex Osborn.
G.They can be words; phrases, paragraphs and anything that can help answer the question.
