文章大意:本文的体裁是议论文。文章讨论了第一印象的有效性,并提出了科学研究结果来支持观点。

1 . All of us have taken an instant dislike to someone, and then felt guilty about being too judgmental. But now it seems we should place more trust in our first impressions. Most people can correctly judge a total stranger following a short meeting, according to scientists.

And in general, the more confident the people are, the more likely they are to be correct in their assumptions. Jeremy Biesanz, who led a team of researchers from the University of British Columbia, said: “Many important decisions are made after very brief encounters — which employee to hire, which person to date, which student to accept”. Although our first impressions are generally accurate, it is necessary for us to recognize where they may be not good enough.

The researchers arranged for two groups of more than 100 people to meet in a meeting. Much like speed-dating, the volunteers spoke to everyone in their group for three minutes each. At the end of each three-minute chat, they were asked to rate each other’s personalities, and how well they thought their impressions “would coincide with someone who knows this person very well”.

To find out what the person was “really” like, the scientists had his friends and family fill out his personality reports. Generally speaking, the more confident the volunteers felt in accurately rating another’s personality, the closer their ratings were to those of the other person’s friends and family, the researchers said.

However, the participants with the highest accuracy were those who rated themselves moderately(适度)accurate — those highly confident of their judgment were less successful. The scientists concluded that, although we know people are different from each other, a good judge of character knows that in many ways people are mostly alike. For example, almost everyone would prefer being kind to being unfriendly.

Therefore, while first impressions can be generally accurate, they are not conclusive in working out whether somebody really is “better” than someone else.

4. In the author’s opinion, ______.
A.many important decisions are made with the help of strangers
B.people tend to have better impressions on friends than on strangers

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。主要介绍的是“游戏障碍”被世界卫生组织列为疾病,不同的心理学家就游戏是否真的让人上瘾这一问题展开讨论。

2 . On January 1st, 2018, “gaming disorder” — in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm — gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO). Last year, China, the world’s biggest gaming market, announced new rules limiting children to just a single hour of play a day. Clinics are appearing around the world, promising to cure patients of their habit.

Are games really addictive? Psychologists have different opinions. The case for the defence is that this is just another moral panic. Similar warnings have been given about television, rock and roll, jazz, comic books, and even novels. As the newest form of mass media, gaming is merely enduring (忍受) its own time before it finally stops being debatable.

However, some argue that unlike rock bands or novelists, games developers have both the motive and the means to engineer their products to make them addictive. For one thing, the business-model has changed. In the old days games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from purchases of in-game goods, which ties playtime directly to developers’ income. For another, games makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them maximize the playtime. Smartphones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. That allows products to be constantly adjusted to increase spending on games.

The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO recognition, diagnoses (诊断) become more common. Clinics are already reporting booming business, as lockdowns have given games more time to spend with their hobby. And being put together in the public mind, fairly or not, with gambling (赌博) will not do the industry any favours.

1. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A.To inform the readers of the harmful effects of games.
B.To arouse the readers’ interest about the topic.
C.To show growing public concern about the problem of games.
D.To discuss whether it is necessary to panic about games.
2. Why is television, together with other media forms, mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To show that they are as highly addictive as games.
B.To prove that the panic over games will fade away.
C.To argue that these media forms are not harmful at all.
D.To compare the differences among these media forms.
3. How do games developers make games addictive?
A.They adjust products based on received data.
B.They don’t charge players for in-game goods.
C.They keep players’ video game machines updated.
D.They reward top players with more playtime.
4. What does the author aim to do in the last paragraph?
A.Make a prediction.B.Offer a suggestion.
C.Put forward a solution.D.Give a warning.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。作者认为人工智能图像生成虽然便捷,但也有不少弊端,在文中从几个方面进行了阐述。

3 . “Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere,” I type into Deep Dream Generator’s Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned to me showing what I’ve described.

Welcome to the world of AI image generation, where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts (提示). But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there’s an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there’s no creative satisfaction.

AI image generation could influence everything from film to graphic novels and more. Children’s illustrators were quick to raise concerns about the technology. They say AI-generated art is the exact opposite of what art is believed to be. Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.

Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others’ work. However, a human artist is also adding emotion and nuance (细微差别) into the mix. AI doesn’t do the same — it can only copy.

The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing (贬低) of the work of artists. There’s already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their “work” is as excellent as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughter, but you are no match for professionals.

1. What does the writer think of his image creation?
A.Exciting.B.Appealing
C.Unsatisfying.D.Shocking.
2. What do children’s illustrators value most about art?
A.The creating process.B.The final work.
C.Personal feelings.D.External forms.
3. What is Paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A.The styles of human artworks and AI ones.
B.Human artists’ influence on AI generators.
C.Different means used in human and AI art creation.
D.The drawbacks of drawing from existing art and text.
4. Which of the following best summarizes the last paragraph?
A.Art is the mirror of life.B.Rome is not built in a day.
C.No man can do two things at once.D.Don’t judge a book by its cover.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。作者通过论述书籍作为礼物的价值和意义,提出了自己的观点,即书籍可以成为有意义的礼物。

4 . Grace Hemingway gifted her son, Earnest, a copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem Hiawatha on his sixth birthday. While it’s hard to say how much her choice of gift influenced Earnest Hemingway at the time, he grew up to become one of the most famous writers in history.

Books can make for charming gifts. Giving a book as a gift to someone is much more than a simple exchange of goods.

When giving books, think about your recipients’ (接受者) favorite. It is worth the time to try and find a rare copy, like first editions or signed copies. They’ll be delighted by the effort. Are your friends stuck in a dullness and in need of some motivation? You can gift them a book that offers inspiration. Also, not mainstream yet useful guides related to their career are helpful.

A book when received as a gift has meaning to the recipient by itself if you’ve put some thought into it. An inscription (题词) adds to the appeal of your gift by making it more individualized. Without an inscription, although still meaningful, the book is just a book indistinguishable from hundreds of thousands of copies out there. A case for not penning down an inscription is that it makes it easier for them to pass it on to someone else if they don’t like the book.

Wondering if you should give your recipient a hardcover or a paperback? There is no universal preference among readers. Some like the paperbacks because of the convenience, easy to carry around and travel with. But many people, including me, prefer hardcovers because they’re more traditional and last much longer. A study designed to find a relation between the weight of wine bottles and their prices found that in most cases the weight of a wine bottle related positively with the price. The weight helped consumers perceive the wine as better.

In a word, books can make for memorable gifts. A good book gifted thoughtfully will create a pleasant memory.

1. Why is Earnest Hemingway mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To share a book.B.To present a fact.
C.To introduce the topic.D.To make a comparison.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.Who the gift should be given.B.How a book should be presented.
C.Where a proper book can be found.D.What kinds of books can be chosen as gifts.
3. Why is an inscription advised to be included in a gifted book?
A.To make the book more personal.
B.To record the giver’s reading experience.
C.To make the content of the book more appealing.
D.To allow the book to be more pleasing to the eye.
4. What does the author want to convey when it comes to the study about wine bottles?
A.Good wine is all in heavier bottles.
B.The weight of a book determines its price.
C.A hardcover book is often valued more as a gift.
D.The price of wine depends on the quality of its bottle.

5 . “The Worthington Christian defeated the Westerville North by 2—1 in an Ohio boys’ soccer game on Saturday.” That’s according to a story that appeared last month in The Columbus Dispatch. That lead was written not by a sportswriter, but by an artificial intelligence (AI) tool.

Many news organizations are now examining how AI might be used in their work. But if they begin their “experimenting” with high school sports because they are less momentous than war, peace, climate change and politics, they may miss something crucial. Nothing may be more important to the students who play high school sports, and to their families, neighborhoods, and sometimes, the whole town. That next game is what the students train for, work toward, and dream about. Someday, almost all student athletes will go on to have jobs in front of screens, in office parks, at schools, in hospitals or on construction sites. They may suffer blows and setbacks. But the high school games they played and watched, as well as their hopes and cheers, will stay vivid in their memories.

I have a small idea. If newspapers will no longer send staff reporters to cover high school games, why not hire high school student journalists? News organizations can pay students an hourly wage to cover high school games. The young reporters might learn how to be fair to all sides, write vividly, and attract readers. That’s what some celebrities in sports did, and do.

And think of the great writers who were inspired by sports: Hemingway on fishing, Bernard Malamud and Marianne Moore on baseball, Chen Zhongshi on football, and CLR James on cricket, who said, “There can be raw pain and bleeding where so many thousands see the inevitable (不可避免的) ups and downs of only a game.” A good high school writer, unlike a robot, could tell readers not just the score, but the stories of the game.

1. Why is the lead mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce an original idea.B.To show AI’s wide application.
C.To bring in the opinion about AI.D.To stress AI’s importance to news.
2. What does the author think of high school games?
A.Hopeful.B.Eye-catching.C.Competitive.D.Far-reaching.
3. What is good sports news like according to the author?
A.Rich in contents.B.Fair in comments.
C.Centered on results.D.Targeted on readers.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.News Organizations Are Abusing AIB.High Schoolers Can Do What AI Can’t
C.Great Writers Are Crazy About SportsD.AI Ruins High School Students’ Memory

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。作者驳斥了科技会妨碍慢阅读这一观点,阐述了对于慢阅读的看法,指出了慢阅读的重要性和好处,并指出科技不能改变人们对深度慢阅读的需求。

6 . Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. Reading on a screen tires your eyes and makes it harder for you to keep your place. Online writing tends to be more skimmable than print. The cognitive neuroscientist Mary Walt argued recently that this “new norm” of skim reading is producing “an invisible, game-changing transformation” in how readers process words. The neuronal circuit (回路) that sustains the brain’s capacity to read now favors the rapid absorption of information.

We shouldn’t exaggerate this danger. All readers skim. From about the age of nine, our eyes start to bounce around the page, reading only about a quarter of the words properly, and filling in the gaps by inference. So far, the anxieties have proved to be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been worried about attention spans lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”

And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. For a start, it means that there is more to read, because more people than ever are writing. And digital writing is meant for rapid release and response. This mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun. But often it treats other people’s words as something to be quickly harvested as fodder (素材) to say something else. Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.

Perhaps we should slow down. Reading is constantly promoted as a social good and source of personal achievement. To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing oneself in the words. and their slow comprehension of a line of thought,

The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change can’t be stopped and happens in one direction, so that older media like “dead-tree” books are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle has not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.

1. What would Selvin Brown probably agree?
A.The culture is on the decline.B.Online writing ruins immersive reading.
C.Worries of attention spans are unnecessary.D.Reading poems is important to attention spans.
2. What is TRUE about digital writing?
A.It lays the foundation for fast reading.
B.It counts on regular interaction with the readers.
C.It requires writers to give up traditional writing modes.
D.It causes too much talking and inadequate deep reflection.
3. What does the underlined word “tenacious” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Slowly-changed.B.Fast-advanced.C.Deep-rooted.D.Rarely-noticed.
4. Which can be the best title for this article?
A.Slow Reading: Here to StayB.Immersive Reading: So Wonderful
C.Reading Habits: Constantly ChangingD.Digital vs Print: A Life-and-Death Struggle

文章大意:本文为一篇议论文。文章主要围绕作者使用有声书作为阅读方式的经历和体验展开,并引入了一项关于信息处理方式的研究,以此为基础探讨了有声书对阅读理解可能产生的影响。

7 . Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result--but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension.

The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel, both at the University of Chicago, and it draws from the “dual process model” of mental processing. According to this-view, we have two ways of assessing information. System 1 is intuitive (直觉的),   relying on natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely exposed to misinformation. System 2 is analytical involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think our way through the material step by step. For decades, psychologists have designed various tests to determine which of these two systems a person is using. As one example, consider the/ following question: How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark (方舟)? If you answered two, you were probably only considering the core of the question, which is System 1 thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the wording, which would allow you to remember it was Noah who built the Ark, not Moses. That is the kind of analytical process.

Keysar and Geipel’s brilliant idea was to investigate whether the sensory form-seeing vs. hearing-of the information would make a difference. They found that it did: when answering these kinds of simple questions, participants were more likely to make errors when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.

A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study. For this reason. I will return to reading non-fiction with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.

1. What does the author think of listening to audiobooks?
A.It is economical.B.It is demanding.
C.It is time-consuming.D.It is relaxing.
2. Which of the following best describes System 2 model?
A.Fairly reliable.B.Fully automatic.
C.Question-centered.D.Emotion-involved.
3. Why is the Ark mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To present a fact.B.To illustrate a view.
C.To introduce a topic.D.To draw a conclusion.
4. What does the author intend to tell us?
A.Listening to books comes at a price.
B.Reading non-fiction books benefits.
C.Critical thinking is a must in reading.
D.Ways of processing information differ.

8 . Girls in primary school are just as physically capable as their male classmates, according to our research, taking the unhappiness out of the phrase “you play like a girl.”

When we compared primary schoolchildren’s physical capabilities, differences between girls and boys were not as pronounced as people think. So they should be happily playing with and competing against each other in the backyard, playground and sporting fields.

As part of wider research to assess people’s physical capabilities across their life course, we tested 300 children and teenagers between the ages of 3 and 19. We tested each child for over two hours, taking more than 100 measurements. Across all measures of physical performance, there was one consistent finding. There was no statistical difference in the capabilities of girls and boys until high-school age (commonly age 12).

Let’s use standing long jump as an example. This provides a measure of your legs’ explosive power. We found no difference between boys and girls before they turn 12. Every physical measure followed this pattern. Before the age of 12, boys and girls do just as well as each other in the standing long jump.

There is no consensus (共识) across schools or among different sports about mixed-gender sports for primary school children. For instance, boys and girls compete separately in most local Little Athletics after age five but field hockey (场地曲棍球) can have mixed gender teams until age 17. And in tennis, primary school-aged girls and boys play separately in singles matches but can play against each other in mixed doubles.

Our findings support the push for boys and girls to compete in mixed sporting teams until the end of primary school, after which the hormonal (荷尔蒙的) changes mean boys tend to perform better in sports and tasks requiring strength and speed.

There are also some practical advantages to mixed sports in primary school and in weekend competitions: fewer scheduling conflicts (allowing school and sport administrations to fit games more conveniently into busy sporting places), fewer clubs or organizations to share already stretched government funding.

1. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in paragraph 2mean?
A.Flexible.B.HorribleC.Obvious.D.Incredible.
2. At what age do boys begin to display a competitive edge in strength-based sports?
A.Age 5.B.Age 12C.Age 17.D.Age 19.
3. What is an advantage of mixed-gender sporting teams?
A.Increased competition and motivation.
B.Enhanced social skills and teamwork.
C.Decreased conflicts within schools,
D.Reduced government budget spending.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.When it comes to sports, a boy does play like a girl.
B.What matters most for girls to be as athletic as boys.
C.Standing long jump: A sport more for boys than girls.
D.Battle of sexes: When boys and girls compete in sports.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了Sora这个强大的AI工具并对其在改变人工智能应用前景方面的强大程度展开了讨论。

9 . Many got sleepless nights after Sora amazed the world with its remarkable ability of creating videos directly from text instructions. Discussions about what the artificial intelligence model can do and make a difference continue.

Some said it could give a huge blow to traditional industries such as film and television making, looking forward to the day when a movie can be created right after a novel is put into the model. But others remain skeptical about how powerful the model can be in changing the landscape of AI application.

Developed by a group of young talent from Microsoft-backed company OpenAI, the text-to-video model can generate videos up to a minute long while maintaining visual quality and adherence to the user’s prompt.

Shen Yang, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University , said, “Sora represents a revolutionary leap in the field of AI-generated content (AIGC).”

As one of the leading scholars in AI research in China, Shen leads a team that studies the philosophy of AI. Until he learned about Sora on February 16, Shen was quite satisfied with his team’s AI-generated videos. A two-minute video on the Spring Festival produced by Shen’s team have recently won many likes on social media platforms. “Compared with the new model Sora, what we used are tools of the previous generation. There’s a huge gap in between," said Shen.

As a frequent user of AI, Shen said the technology not only helps improve his productivity, but also benefits his daily life. His wife was suffering from cancer and many complications, and he used AI to assist in finding treatment, which has remarkably prolonged her life. He even wrote an award-winning science fiction novel using AI.

However, new technologies do not mean good news to everyone. Many also concern about AI models’ safety issues since related regulations are lagging behind.

Sora is going to bring changes in many fields, including short video, film and television, news, games, advertising, education, and even industrial manufacturing, according to Shen. There is still much room to improve AI models. For instance, current AI models are not capable of drawing characters accurately and quickly. Shop signs lack meaning in Sora’s demo video showing a woman walking down a street in Tokyo. But these problems are believed to be solved as models update.

1. Which of the following might have similar meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 2?
A.push.B.strike.C.warning.D.bonus.
2. What can we know from the passage?
A.All people can not benefit from the new AI technologies.
B.AI model’s safety isn’t concerning despite lagging legal restrictions.
C.The AI-generated videos by Shen Yang’s team were better than those created by Sora.
D.The text-to-video model was developed by a group of young talent from Tsinghua University.
3. What kind of attitude does Shen have towards Sora?
A.Favorable.B.Objective.C.Unconcerned.D.Reserved.
4. Which of the following is the best title?
A.Sora: An AI video.B.Video Making: AI Models.
C.Sora: A Powerful AI Tool.D.Video Making: Future of AI.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。作者认为医生或护士有肥胖或其他健康问题会给病人树立不好的榜样,尽管医生或护士有过这样的个人经历也可能会帮助他们更好地理解病人。

10 . In the United Stated, it is reported that one in fourth nurses are obese, with nearly two-thirds being overweight.

While some have argued that obese nurse may be less productive and take more time off sick, this isn’t my concern at all. I’m just worried about the example they set to others. Yes, of course, nurses and doctors struggle with having a healthy lifestyle like everyone else. But if they stick to the basic principles of keeping a healthy lifestyle, then they have no business being on the front line. No patient is going to take them seriously unless they show that they at least try to practise what they promote.

It’s a serious professional failing, because it sends the disastrous message of “do as I say not as I do”, which is never going to result in someone changing their ways. You wouldn’t take advice about reducing your drinking from an alcoholic. So why should you be expected to listen to an overweight nurse who is telling you to lose a few pounds?

Of course, there are lots of examples when a doctor or nurse’s personal struggles can really help. I used to smoke and I find this actually helps me because I can relate to patients — I know their struggles, I know their concerns and I know the things they say to themselves to avoid quitting. Knowing that I used to smoke helps me come across as more human to my patients — I’ve done silly things but I’ve changed and so they can.

1. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.He has always lived a healthy life.
B.He struggles against any patients.
C.He understands smokers better.
D.He keeps asking them to quit smoking.
