2 . I was 17 when I discovered shooting stars.

I loved them so much that I invited my high school friends to my family farm and spent an August night in our sleeping bags on the hillside to watch them together.

I can’t help but think of that as the final night of my childhood. I always managed to squeeze in a week or two of vacation before starting back at school, and I’d see shooting stars and remember that brilliant night on the hill. While still marveling at them, I’d work at convincing myself that the joy I’d experience from my accomplishments in college would soon replace my longing for some quiet time beneath a vast sky. But always, I returned to college life in August with deep sadness in my heart.

I’ve given lots of reasons over the past 13 years for my choice to live an independent life on a distant farm and home school my daughters. But deep down, I think the shooting stars had a lot to do with it. I couldn’t bear to gaze up at them and think that they were a finale to be witnessed before returning to the demands of school and careers.

So I said “no” to all of it: no jobs, no school. And I decided to lead a life tied to the seasons, where shooting stars were just one of many gifts from nature.

I changed my life to make room for them and I’m starting to learn the difference between fulfillment and accomplishment.

Accomplishment is a child’s successful test scores. Fulfillment is loving and forgiving each other through times table (乘法表)and written words.

Accomplishment is the publication of 20 essays per year and six books, Fulfillment is the hours spent researching, then walking through the woods to think about each word and thought.

Accomplishment is making enough income to cover my taxes. Fulfillment is sitting outside at 3 am in August, watching the shooting stars, no longer sad at the passage of childhood, but thrilled for the joy of the stars.

It is learned that accomplishment is merely a mark in the book made as a result of following fulfillment above all else.

1. What does the author believe indicates the end of her childhood?
A.Departing for college.B.Witnessing falling stars at home.
C.Resting in a sleeping bag on a farm.D.Observing shooting stars with friends.
2. What led to the author homeschooling her daughters?
A.The aspiration for independence.
B.The necessity of residing on a farm.
C.The wish for a lifestyle connected with nature.
D.The requirements of education and professions.
3. Which of the following could the author view as fulfillment?
A.Earning a gold medal in a sports tournament.
B.Investing meaningful time with family members.
C.Acquiring a spacious, charming, and cozy residence.
D.Attaining a prominent position in a famous company.
4. What kind of person is the author?
A.Independent and unconventional.B.Determined and open-minded.
C.Responsible and insightful.D.Diligent and dedicated.

3 . Producing genuine tears on demand is one of the hardest parts of my job as an actress. Acting teachers will tell you that in order to cry on screen you need to summon up something personal—a fear, an inner secret, a sad experience—that taps into your deepest emotions.

This may sound strange, but the inner secret I use when I need to cry during a movie scene is the image of an elephant. It’s an image that haunts me, an image that will remain in my heart and mind for as long as I live.

Two years ago I visited Samburu National Reserve, a wildlife park in Kenya. There, on a guided walk through the bush, I saw my first dead elephant. Poachers had hunted down this magnificent animal before piercing her tough hide (兽皮) with poisoned spears. As if she already knew her fate, the elephant had walked through the bush, the toxins (毒素) coursing through her veins, until she found a quiet place to lie down. When I saw her, her body was lying in the dusty red soil. That moment, the sight of the dead mother and her mutilated (残缺的) body lying under the shade of the tree, changed something inside me. I remember crying for her as I thought about the cruelty and senselessness that had led to her death.

That’s why I’m supporting a new United Nations campaign against the illegal trade in wildlife, which is pushing many species—not just elephants—to the edge of extinction in every corner of the world. Under the banner “Wild for Life”, this campaign serves to raise awareness about the illegal trade in wildlife and encourage everyone to take action against these crimes. The time for tears is over. The time for action is upon us.

1. Why does the author mention producing genuine tears on demand in the first paragraph?
A.To emphasize it is hard to produce genuine tears on demand.
B.To indicate the importance of genuine tears to a successful film.
C.To introduce the topic.
D.To prove a point.
2. What happened to the elephant according to the third paragraph?
A.The elephant mother lied under a tree and died naturally.
B.The elephant was shot with poisoned spears by poachers and died.
C.The elephant already knew some poachers would kill her.
D.The elephant escaped to a safe place successfully.
3. How did the author feel when seeing the dead body of the elephant?
A.Indifferent.B.Anxious.C.Sorrowful.D.Cautious.
4. What’s the aim of the campaign “Wild for Life”?
A.To raise awareness about the illegal trade in wildlife and encourage people to take action.
B.To help protect extinct wildlife species.
C.To criticize the illegal hunting and trade.
D.To stop the illegal trade such as ivory happening entirely.

6 . Growing up in a Jamaican American household, food was an important part of my childhood. I remember my grandmother preparing fried dumplings and curry mutton, jazz music playing in the background. Food was our greatest treasure. Food brought the family together. Food celebrated new beginnings and eased the wounds of life’s untimely endings.

When I was 8, I was diagnosed with a muscle disease, which caused me to spend most of my childhood in hospital. rooms and wheelchairs, slowly gaining weight by swallowing prednisone (肾上腺皮质激素) hidden inside mint chocolate chip ice cream. My mom made it her duty to help me lose the weight through strict dieting. I’ve tried every single one. In fairness, my mother did the best she could. As a single mom, she felt this brought us closer. However, as an adult, I began to experience a paralyzing fear of food. My “I’ll start a new diet on Monday” mind-set lasted for 16 years as I uncontrollably ate and abused my body. I was worried that I was not attractive enough. So obsessed and afraid no one would hire me as an actress if I didn’t win the battle with the numbers on the scale, in February 2011 I was send to hospital.

We do extreme things to our bodies because of those numbers, numbers that cannot talk with us or love us. I have had to stop judging my belly, stop starving myself, stop getting on the scale and staring at those numbers. I have come to the realization that my life is more important than those numbers on the scale and that the quality of the life I live is more important than how I look in the mirror.

1. What role did food play in author’s childhood?

A.It was fruitful.B.It way useless.
C.It made her frightened of food.D.It brought her and Mom closer.
4. What attitude does the author have to the numbers on the scale now?
A.Uncaring.B.Deeply skeptical.
C.Dismissive.D.Particularly concerned.
