1 . American Anai Espinoza is in the eighth grade. This summer, she took part in a summer dance program called AileyCamp. Each morning, she and other campers would say several phrases together. Her favorite is this: "I am in control." Espinoza said, "It makes me believe I have the power to choose the right thing."

AileyCamp was created in 1989 in Kansas City, Missouri by world-famous dancer and director Alvin Ailey. About 1,000 students in 10 U. S. states take part in AileyCamp every year. It is a free, six-week program, especially aimed at young people in financial need or who have school, social or family difficulties.

In addition to dance, the camp introduces students to visual arts, creative writing and other communication skills. It also teaches them how to eat well, solve conflicts and become leaders, notes the camp's website. Dianne Caroll Sales directs the AileyCamp in Atlanta, Georgia. When the camp is over, the city's professional ballet company offers 10 students a full-tuition scholarship for a year of training. The scholarship can be renewed.

Kameron Davis received one of those scholarships when he was a young man. He trained with the Atlanta Ballet for three years. Then he became a dance teacher. Davis said he does not think his mother could have paid for dance classes without the scholarship. Davis said children at school made fun of him when he began dancing. AileyCamp, he said, offered him a safe place and increased his confidence. Today, he enjoys giving back to the program by helping new campers build their confidence, too. "It's an open door to finding new things, doing new things," Davis said. "When I got to AileyCamp, it just reassured me that, 'Hey, it's okay. Everybody is different. You shouldn't be judged by what you do just because not a lot of people do it.'"

1. What is special about AileyCamp?
A.It was set up in Missouri.
B.Its founder was a famous dancer and director.
C.It was free of charge.
D.It was intended for the poor young people who had troubles in life.
2. Which of the following word can replace the underlined word in paragraph four?
A.comfortB.warn
C.teachD.persuade
3. What can be inferred according to Kameron Davis?
A.He got the scholarship because he was good at the Atlanta Ballet.
B.He believed his mother would pay for his dance class from the very beginning.
C.He was grateful for AileyCamp.
D.He often played jokes on his students when teaching them to dance.

2 . After the movie ended, two ladies in their 80s were invited on stage. One of the women, who was sitting in a wheelchair, couldn't hold back her tears as she spoke in front of the audience. The other woman, leaned in and brush away her tears. The entire theater fell quiet for a while as the two held each other, then slowly the applause began to build until it became a thunderous roar.

About Chinese composer Xian Xinghai, the film is the first coproduction between studios in China and Kazakhstan. The woman in the wheelchair was Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov's niece Kalamkas Arislanova, while the woman at her side was Xian's daughter Xian Nina.

Xian Xinghai was the first Chinese student admitted to the Paris Music Conservatory. A household name in China, he is best known for his Yellow River Cantata,a patriotic (爱国的) work that inspired numerous Chinese during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945). Even though most Chinese people know Xian as one of the greatest musicians in the country, few know that during the early 1940s, the last few years of his life, he got stuck in Kazakhstan while trying to return to China from Russia.

The choice to make the film was inspired by Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev University in 2013, according to Shen Jian, executive producer of the film and the CEO of Shinework Pictures, the studio behind the film. During his speech,Xi said that at a time when Xian had no family and was struggling with poverty and sickness,Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov gave him a family.

Throughout his time in Kazakhstan, Baikadamov's niece Kalamkas Arislanova was like a daughter to him. However, when Xian left China, Nina was only 8 months old. Due to the war, the musician was never able to return to his motherland before he died in 1945.

Shen told Global Times that the Nina and Arislanova were very excited about the film as it enabled them to reunite with Xian through the big screen. Nina noted that the film is particularly significant for her, as most films about Xian have focused on describing him as a great musician, while this one is about him as her father.

As shown in the movie, Xian was able to concentrate on music with the generous help of Baikadamov and his family. Inspired by the Kazakh people, Xian created many works during his time in Kazakhstan.

1. What is special about the movie?
A.It is about a famous Chinese composer.
B.It is the first movie produced between China and Kazakhstan.
C.It is about Xian's daughter Xian Nina.
D.It stands for the friendship between two women.
2. Why was Xian Xinghai famous in China?
A.He was the first Chinese student admitted to the Paris Music Conservatory.
B.He met difficulties when trying to return to China.
C.He joined the war of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
D.His masterpiece inspired many people to fight against Japanese.
3. How was the movie made?
A.It was set in Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev University.
B.It was directed by the CEO of Shinework Pictures.
C.It was inspired by Chinese President Xi's speech in 2003.
D.It focused on how he became a great musician.

3 . Albert Einstein was probably the most famous scientist of the twentieth century. He changed scientific thinking in the modern world. He is generally considered as the greatest physicist who ever lived. What’s more, he devoted a lot of his time and energy to working for human rights and progress.

In 1933, while Einstein was visiting England and the United States, the Nazi government of Germany took all his things away, including his position and his citizenship. Einstein then settled down in the United States. In 1934, Einstein, who loved peace — afraid of a world in which only Hitler would have an atomic bomb (原子弹) — tried hard to persuade President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a famous letter to have the United States start uranium (铀) research. That Germany, after all, had no bomb, and that the first bomb would fall on Japan, could not have been expected. After the war, Einstein never stopped working for peace and reducing the number of soldiers in the world.

Although he wasn’t connected with any accepted religion (宗教), Einstein felt that trusting in a personal God was too special an idea to be suitable to the God at work in this universe, but he never believed that the universe was one of chance or disorder. The universe to him was one of pure law and order. He once said, "God may know everything, but he is not hateful."

1. From the passage we know that______________ .

A.have continued his scientific research
B.have won another Nobel Prize for Physics
C.not have advised starting uranium research in the U.S.A.
D.not have moved to the U.S.A.
3. Einstein__________ in 1933.
A.visited England and the U.S.A.
B.advised the United States to start uranium research
C.became a man without citizenship
D.both A and C
4. Einstein believed that everything in the universe________________.
A.was kept in order by its own law
B.had nothing to do with each other
C.happened in an irregular way
D.was made by the personal God

4 . After achieving huge success in the past two seasons, Letters Alive returns with more surprises. The show is performed first on China’s major video platform, v.qq.com, and then is aired on Heilongjiang Satellite TV on Saturdays. Letters penned by celebrities (名人) ages ago, or modern ordinary people, are chosen and then read by today’s stars, striking a chord (引起共鸣) with audiences by presenting human stories.

According to Guan Zhengwen, the show’s chief director, the letters offer a view into universal values. “There is only one standard in our selection. That is, these letters deserve to be seen by more people,” the director said.

“Different cultural backgrounds do exist in the world, but human nature can bridge different cultures. People’s understanding of themselves, others and society can be understood through writing, and that’s the power of letters,” the director said. “Chinese letters are still the mainstay of the program, but the addition of classic letters from abroad is certain to bring more tastes to it,” he added.

As a rule, the 12-episode (一集) culture program has invited many well-known Chinese celebrities. In comparison with the former two seasons, more young artists are taking part this time. “Our program’s viewers under the age of 29 account for more than 75 percent of the total. However, the popularity of celebrities among the young generation is not our selection preference,” Guan said.

Also it is worth noting that the program has added a comment time. Each time a letter is read, a famous commentator sits in the studio and shares his feelings toward the letter and tells viewers the stories behind letters. “The commentators’ views do not stand for the truth, as there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes,” the director said. “But they, based on their vision and experience, will express positive social energy to viewers.”

1. What does the underlined word “aired” probably mean in the first paragragh?
A.Advertised.B.Broadcast.
C.Sold.D.Made.
2. Why are some classic letters from abroad chosen by the show?
A.To make the show more colorful.
B.To attract more young audiences.
C.To bring more fashion to the program.
D.To cover the shortage of Chinese letters.
3. What is new about the program?
A.Foreign artists will be invited for the first time.
B.More stars favored by the young will be chosen.
C.There will be an explanation after the reading is finished.
D.Viewers will have a chance to read their own letters in the show.
4. Where can we read this text?
A.In an advertisement.B.In a history textbook.
C.In a fashion magazine.D.In a news report.

5 . A newly discovered lizard (蜥蜴) found in the Philippines has made scientists think there might be other never-before-seen creatures on that country’s islands. But scientists say those creatures might never be found because the islands’ rain forests are in danger.

The latest lizard was first spotted in 2001 when scientists saw local people of the island catch it for food. Scientists took some pictures of the lizard. Finally scientists caught a lizard themselves to study. They named the new lizard the Northern Sierra Madre forest monitor because it was discovered in the islands’ Sierra Madre Mountains. The 6.6-foot-long lizard has bright yellow markings that distinguish (区分) it from more boring-looking monitors. Its legs are mainly yellow, and its tail is black and yellow.

So how could scientists work in the Philippines’ rain forests for years without finding the new lizard? They say the Northern Sierra Madre forest monitor is unlike other lizards and their larger cousin, the Komodo dragon. All of those lizards are meat-eaters. But the new-found lizard eats fruit. That means it never has to come down out of the trees. Its uniquely colored skin, quiet manner, and treetop home helped it remain hidden from scientists’ view for many years.

The discovery of the Northern Sierra Madre forest monitor is making scientists realize that Philippines’ rain forests may hold many undiscovered species. But those species will not be found if the rain forests keep disappearing. Twenty years ago, forests covered about 35 percent of the Philippines’ land. But people have been encroaching on that land and building on it. Today, forests cover less than 25 percent of the country’s land.

The rain forests are a “conservation (保护) hot spot” that need to be protected, scientists say. “I hope we can make the new lizard a ‘poster child’ for conservation of the land,” said one scientist.

1. What is the scientists’ attitude to finding more new creatures in Philippines’ rain forests?
A.Interested.B.Doubtful.
C.Excited.D.Supportive.
2. How did scientists discover the new lizard?
A.They caught one with the help of locals.
B.The locals gave one to scientists as a gift.
C.They found it from pictures taken by locals.
D.They noticed it when locals hunted the lizard.
3. What is special about the new-found lizard according to Paragragh 3?
A.It is a cruel meat-eater.B.It is the largest lizard in Asia.
C.It spends most time in trees.D.It looks like Komodo dragon.
4. What does the underlined phrase “encroaching on” mean?
A.Invading.(侵略)B.Protecting.
C.Maintaining.D.Deserting.

6 . People in Japan tend to live longer and stay healthier in their later years, with an increasing number of old people living alone. Japan is on a fast track to “ultra-age” with people aged 65 or above accounting for 28 percent of its total population in 2019;it was 26.7 percent in 2017. On the other hand, the number of births in 2019 fell to its lowest (about 941,000) since records began in 1899.

Demand for care services for elderly people has increased. A shrinking (缩小) working population means fewer able-bodied adults are available to look after the elderly. State-provided facilities for the elderly are not enough, which causes elderly people to turn to private ones but they are expensive.

The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by 2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. A study found that using robots encouraged one third of the people to become more active and independent. Yet there is no robot that can provide the emotional support to the elderly.

Japan provides a case study for China, which is also faced with a fast aging population. 17.23 million babies were born in China in 2019, about 630,000 fewer than in 2018. People aged 60 accounted for 17.3 of China’s population in 2019. With a shortage of elderly care facilities and unbalanced supply, China may find it hard to deal with the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.

To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes, which Japan is unwilling or unable to do or even consider. China should pay attention to the signals its aging population is sending and take proper and timely action.

1. What do we learn about the old Japanese?
A.More and more old Japanese prefer to live on their own.
B.A lot of old Japanese have to continue working at old age.
C.Some old Japanese remain active with the help of robots.
D.Japanese aged 65 or above make up one third of its population.
2. What can we know about state-provided care facilities for the elderly in Japan?
A.They are expensive.B.They are inconvenient.
C.They are affordable.D.They are fashionable.
3. What do the Japanese do to deal with the shortage of health nurses?
A.They hire foreign health nurses.
B.They employ advanced robots.
C.They set up more nursing schools.
D.They train the elderly to tend themselves.
4. What is the main idea of the last two paragraph?
A.Japan has to take action to deal with the aging population.
B.Robots can’t provide emotional support to the elderly.
C.China is now faced with a fast aging population.
D.Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.

7 . A 2018 report found that food waste would increase by a third to 2. 1billion tons by 2030. Beyond the cost of the waste itself,thrown-away food generates a gas that contributes to climate change.

Home delivery meal kits(盒)can reduce food waste by more than two-thirds,but suppliers need to switch to reusable packaging to make them environmentally friendly.

Tailor-made meal kits cut waste by providing people with precise amounts of fresh ingredients(烹饪原料)for chosen recipes, meaning leftovers are minimized. But while the   delivery services score well on reducing food waste, buying the same food ingredients from the supermarket almost always saves energy overall simply because meal kits use so much single-use packaging. The good news is that if people have meals that are tailored for consumption, they won’t overbuy and have less food waste. They fine-tune the amount of food to what they will actually eat.

Meal kits can reduce transport emissions(排放)if people go to the supermarket less   frequently. If people only go and buy such goods as soap and toilet paper, they may only have to visit once every couple of months. A delivery truck can carry meals for a lot of people in the neighborhood. So dozens of car trips might be replaced with one truck trip.

However, study found that even if delivery meal kits reduced food waste to zero, they would still use up more energy overall than buying the same food from the supermarket unless the energy used for the meal kit packaging was cut by a fifth. The packaging is a killer if it’s single-use and thrown away, which can make all the environmental benefits lost. But if the packaging can be reused,if it’s glass bottles, like in the old days,we can get some benefits.

1. What can we learn about home delivery meal kits?
A.They can cut down on daily expenses.
B.They will totally solve the problem of food waste.
C.They can keep energy consumption to a minimum.
D.They will benefit the environment with reusable packaging.
2. What does the underlined word“fine-tune”in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Attach.B.Adjust.
C.Raise.D.Compare.
3. The author suggests carrying meals with a delivery truck to__________.
A.reduce transport emissionsB.save more food
C.shop only in the supermarketD.shorten car trip distances
4. What’s the author’s attitude to meal kits?
A.Supportive.B.Unfavorable.
C.Objective.D.Indifferent.

8 . A 23-year-old British woman has invented a product that she hopes will one day take the place of single-use plastic. The new product is made by combining fishing waste and algae (藻类).

Lucy Hughes created the material, called MarinaTex, for her final year project at the University of Sussex. She continued her research after she left the university.

On November 13, the James Dyson Foundation announced that Hughes was the international winner of the 2019 James Dyson Award for design.

MarinaTex is edible, meaning it can be eaten without danger. Hughes says it also is strong and stable. But unlike plastic, MarinaTex breaks down in four to six weeks under normal conditions and does not pollute the soil.

The inventor said she is concerned about the growing amounts of plastics in ocean waters. She noted one report that there would be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by the year 2050. The United Nations estimates that 100 million tons of plastic waste has already been left in the oceans.

Hughes also was investigating ways to reduce the amount of waste from the fishing industry. The industry produces an estimated 50 million tons of waste worldwide each year, UN officials say.

Hughes told Reuters that she was "trying to work out how I could use the waste stream and add value to that waste." Examining fish parts left over from processing helped to give her the idea for a material that was useful and did not harm the environment.

To create a strong material, Hughes added the molecule chitosan, which comes from sea creatures like crabs, and agar, a material from red algae.

After months of testing, Hughes produced a strong, flexible sheet that forms at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius.

Inventor James Dyson said that MarinaTex is "stronger, safer and much more sustainable" than the plastic polyethylene. It is also easier to break down than other possible replacement products for polyethylene, the material that single-use plastic bags are made of.

Hughes will receive about $41,000 in prize money as the first place winner of the James Dyson Award. She told Reuters that she plans to use the money to better develop the product and ways to mass produce it.

1. When did Lucy Hughes create MarinaTex?
A.At university.B.After graduation.
C.Before going to university.D.After winning the James Dyson Award.
2. What's true about MarinaTex?
A.It is delicious.B.It is environmentally friendly.
C.It is a type of plastics.D.It exists for a long time in nature.
3. What helped to give her the idea for MarinaTex?
A.Observing the process of fishing.
B.Studying different parts of a fish.
C.Checking waste from the fishing industry.
D.Examining left-over fish parts after cooking.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment.B.Education.
C.Lifestyle.D.Technology.

9 . How do you spend your time?To get it,Paul T.Rankin asked sixty-eight individuals to keep an accurate, detailed record of what they did every minute of their waking hours. He discovered that 70percent of their waking time was spent on one thing only-communication.Put that evidence alongside the research findings uncovered by the Human Engineering Laboratories, they discovered that, vocabulary, more than any other factor yet known, predicts financial success.New words make us better thinkers as well as communicators. What better reason for beginning right now to extend your vocabulary? But how?

Hybrid (杂交产生的) corn combines the best qualities of several varieties to ensure maximum productivity.A hybrid approach to vocabulary should,in the same way, ensure maximum results. That's why you should use the CPD formula.

Through Context. When students in a college class were asked what should be done when they came across an unknown word in their reading,84percent said,"Look it up in the dictionary."If you do,however, you short-circuit the very mental processes needed to make your efforts most productive.

But there's another reason.Suppose someone asks you what the word"fast"means. You answer,"speedy or swift".But does it mean that in such context as"fast color"or"fast friend"?And if a horse is fast,is it securely tied or galloping at top speed? It could be either. It all depends. On the dictionary? No,on the context. After all, there are over twenty different meanings for"fast"in the dictionary. But the dictionary doesn't tell you which meaning is intended. That's why it makes such good sense to begin with context.

Through Word Parts. Now for the next step.Often unfamiliar words contain one or more parts, which,if recognized, provide definite help with meaning.Take the word"monolithic"for example.Try to separate the parts. There is the prefix mono-,meaning"one",and the root-lith,meaning"stone".Finally,there's the suffix-ic,meaning"consisting of".Those three parts add up to this definition:"consisting of one stone".

To speed up your use of word parts, you will be introduced to the fourteen most important words in the English language. The prefix and root elements in those few words are found in over 14,000words.With those amazingly useful shortcuts, you can build up vocabulary, not at a snail's pace, one word at a time, but in giant leaps,up to a thousand words at a time.

Through the Dictionary. Now you can see why you should consult the dictionary last, not first. You've looked carefully at the context. You've looked for familiar word parts. Now you play Sherlock Homes. In light of context or word parts, you try to solve a mystery. What exactly does that strange word mean?Only after you go through the mental gymnastics to come up with a tentative (不确定的) definition should you open the dictionary to see if you're right.

You are now personally involved.Your increased interest will lead to a better memory of both word and meaning. It also encourages your development of the habits needed to accelerate your progress. And when you see in black and white the definition you had expected, what a feeling of accomplishment is yours. In that way,the CPD Formula provides the exact approaches for maximum effectiveness.

Well, there it is,your new formula-Context,Parts,Dictionary.Use it!The results will be like the money in the bank.
