1 . Our skies are filling up with satellites (卫星). Starting in May 2019, the firm SpaceX has deployed (部署) around 700 Starlink satellites into Earth orbit (轨道) over 11 launches. SpaceX plans to deploy 12000, and perhaps later 42000, satellites with the aim of providing access (使用……的机会) to the entire world.

These satellites have the promise to change the way that the night sky looks. For comparison, there are 2600 satellites currently orbiting Earth. These days, spotting (发现) a few satellites in the sky is still an exciting activity.

There are many online tools available to predict when you might get a glimpse (一瞥) of a Starlink satellite. One, called Find Starlink , takes your location (位置) and tells you what time and where in the sky to look. Even with the help of a tool it can still be a game of chance, but if you try a few times, you will eventually see something.

To get the best chance of seeing a Starlink satellite, pick a clear night. Try to get away from light pollution by going to a park or an open field, for example. Let your vision (视力) adjust to (适应) the darkness, then keep an eye out for moving sources of light in the sky. Satellites are only visible (可见的) when they reflect (反射) sunlight back to Earth. Because of this, the best time to look is just after sunset or just before sunrise, when sunlight is still reflecting off the satellites but it is dark enough to see them.

If you can’t tell whether you are looking at is a satellite or something else, there are a few simple rules to tell the difference. If a point of light is steady (稳定的) and not moving compared with everything else, it is a star. If it is a bright light moving slowly compared with the stars, it is a planet. If it is a bright flash moving extremely quickly across the sky in seconds, it is a meteor (流星).

1. Why does the firm SpaceX plan to send more satellites into space ?
A.To change the view of the night sky.
B.To offer more exact location data to the army.
C.To provide information for scientific research.
D.To make Internet available to the whole world.
2. To see a Starlink satellite better, what should we avoid ?
A.Choosing a clear night.
B.Staying away from light pollution.
C.Looking at moving light after sunrise.
D.Making your eyes used to the dark sky.
3. What is it if a light point is steady and not moving compared with a building ?
A.A star.B.A planet.
C.A meteor.D.A plane.
4. Which of the following is True according to the passage ?
A.SpaceX has launched 11 Starlink satellites onto Mars.
B.Satellites are only visible when they take in sunlight.
C.The best time to look at satellites is before sunrise as well as after sunset.
D.There are many ways available for people to spot a Starlink satellite online.

3 . On the first day of school, all the excited students walked into the room expecting to start: everyone but David.

He had had a hard summer. His father was in jail (监狱). His mother had to work nights, so she wasn't at home in the evening and was sleeping when he woke up.

As the weeks went on, David slowly gave up doing his homework and staying on task, and began to get into more troubles out on the playground. He was going downhill quickly. It was clear that he was looking for any kind of attention—even if it was negative. I also knew that he was not getting much support at home. If David was going to pass the fifth grade, I need to come up with a plan.

One day, David and I sat in the library and just talked. I told him that I knew that he was not an “F” student and that I was not going to let him fail. It was my job to teach him, but his job was to try. We talked about home and what he did after school. He knew what I expected him to do and that I respected him as a person. As a result, his behavior in my room improved. From then on David and I periodically sat in the library and just talked. He told me that his goal was to pass the fifth grade and not be suspended (停学). Finally, the last day of school arrived. David had met his goal.

During Teacher Appreciation (感谢) Week, the students had written about any teacher they wanted. In my booklet, on a wrinkled piece of paper, it reads. “You never give up on me and focus on the silver lining because you know I am smart. And for that I not only appreciate you, but admire you”, signed David. After reading that, I sat down with tears rolling down my face. We, as teachers, never know when or how we affect our students. But it's the note like this that makes all we do worthwhile.

1. According to the passage, we know the writer is_____________.
A.talentedB.brainlessC.patientD.selfish
2. Why did David like to make troubles in school?
A.Because his father was put into prison.
B.Because he was disappointed to the society.
C.Because he was laughed at by classmates.
D.Because he wanted to attract attention.
3. Which of the following quotes can express the writer's feeling?

4 . Kaitlin Woolley and Ayelet Fishbach report in Psychological Science that a meal taken “family-style” from a central plate can greatly improve the outcome of later negotiations.

Having conducted previous research in 2017 revealing that eating similar foods led to people feeling emotionally closer to one another, Dr Woolley and Dr Fishbach wondered whether the way in which food was served also had a psychological effect. They theorized that, on the one hand, sharing food with other people might indicate food scarcity(短缺)and increase a feeling of competition. However, they also reasoned that it could instead lead people to become more aware of others' needs and drive cooperative behavior as a result. Curious to find out, they did a series of experiments.

For the first test they included 100 pairs of participants from a local cafe, none of whom knew each other. The participants were seated at a table and fed corn chips with salsa. Half the pairs were given their own basket of 20 grams of chips and a bowl of 25 grams of salsa, and half were given 40 grams of chips and 50 grams of salsa to share. As a cover for the experiment, all participants were told this snack was to be consumed before the game began.

The game asked the participants to negotiate an hourly wage rate during a fictional strike. Each person was randomly assigned to represent the union or management and follow a set of rules.

The researchers measured cooperation by noting the number of rounds it took to reach an agreement, and found that those who shared food resolved the strike significantly faster(in 8. 7rounds)than those who did not(13.2 rounds). A similar experiment was conducted with 104 participants and Goldfish crackers(饼干), this time negotiating an airline's route prices. The results were much the same, with the food-sharers negotiating successfully 63. 3% of the time and those who did not share doing so 42. 9%of the time.

1. What does the "family-style" meal in the report refer to?
A.A meal taken at home.B.A meal shared with others.
C.A meal consumed by oneself.D.A meal taken in a family atmosphere.
2. For what purpose did the researchers carry out the present experiments?
A.To show the way food is served.
B.To prove sharing food increases competition.
C.To confirm sharing food can promote cooperation.
D.To find out whether sharing food can get people close emotionally.
3. Why were participants asked to eat up the snack before the game?
A.To hide the intention of the experiment.
B.To avoid the distraction during the game.
C.To reward them for their participation.
D.To add to their energy.
4. How did Dr Woolley and Dr Fishbach prove their point of view?
A.By making a questionnaire.

5 . In the winter of 1664-65, a bitter cold fell on London in the days before Christmas. Above the city, an unusually bright comet (彗星) shot across the sky, exciting much prediction of a snow storm. Outside the city wall, a woman was announced dead of a disease that was spreading in that area. Her house was locked up and the phrase “Lord Have Mercy On Us” was painted on the door in red.

By the following Christmas, the virus that had killed the woman would go on to kill nearly 100,000 people living in and around London — almost a third of those who did not flee.

In The Great Plague (瘟疫), historian A.Lloyd Moote and microbiologist Dorothy C.Moote provide a deeply informed account of this plague year. Reading the book, readers are taken from the palaces of the city’s wealthiest citizens to the poor areas where the vast majority of Londoners were living, and to the surrounding countryside with those who fled. The Mootes point out that, even at the height of the plague, the city did not fall into chaos. Doctors, nurses and the church staff remained in the city to care for the sick; city officials tried their best to fight the crisis with all the legal tools; and commerce continued even as businesses shut down.

To describe life and death in and around London, the authors focus on the experiences of nine individuals. Through their letters and diaries, the Mootes offer fresh descriptions of key issues in the history of the Great Plague: how different communities understood and experienced the disease; how medical, religious, and government bodies reacted; how well the social order held together; the economic and moral dilemmas people faced when debating whether to flee the city; and the nature of the material, social, and spiritual resources supporting those who remained. Based on humanity (人性), the authors offer a masterful portrait of a city and its inhabitants attacked by — and daringly resisting — unimaginable horror.

1. What can we learn from paragraph one?
A.A comet always follows the storm.
B.London was under approaching step threat.
C.London was prepared for the disease.

A.The people tried a lot in vain.B.The rich area didn’t experience the plague.
C.The city remained organized.D.The majority fled and thus survived.
3. Why do the Mootes focus on the nine individuals?
A.They were famous people in history.B.They all manage to survive the plague
C.They united by thinking and acting as one.D.They provided a vivid story of humanity.
4. The purpose of the text is__________.
A.to introduce a new bookB.to correct a misunderstanding
C.to report a new studyD.to show respect to the authors

6 . The shadow play is a typical traditional entertainment that has survived and thrived over the centuries. It is taken as an earliest ancestor of modern cinema.

Legend has it that more than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty was very depressed over the death of his favorite concubine (妃子). To help him get over his sadness, a minister made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the concubine and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see. The show brought the emperor some comfort. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover’s spirit. This is thought to be the beginning of the shadow play.

One mouth tells stories of thousands of years; a pair of hands operates millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works. Nicknamed “the business of the five”, a shadow puppet group is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a Suona and a Yueqin, one plays the Banhu, one is in charge of percussion (打击乐器) instruments, and one sings.

During performances, “actors” are held close to a white curtain with their colored shadows cast on it by a strong light from behind. The operator plays five puppets at the same time, each of which has three threads. Ten fingers handle fifteen threads. Moved by guiding sticks, the puppets play roles with musical accompaniment. The popularity of shadow play in some way lies in the equipment being light and easy to carry, the small number of people needed for a performance, and the flexible requirements for performance places. The plays can be quite dramatic and, when it comes to fairy tales or kungfu stories, the “actors” may be made to ride on clouds or perform unusual feats, to the great enjoyment of the audience, especially children.

The design of the figures follows traditional moral evaluation. The audience can tell a figure’s character by seeing his mask. Like the masks in Beijing Opera, a red mask represents honesty, a black mask, loyalty, and a white one, betrayal.

Nowadays, the shadow play has been industrialized and developed a series of tourist products for the promotion of Chinese culture and tourism.

A.The origin of the shadow play.B.How to please an Emperor.
C.A love story of Emperor Wudi.D.How to make a cotton puppet.

A.because the equipment is light to carryB.when roles are played without music
C.because the number of the operators is smallD.when the puppets give lively performances
3. A figure comes with a white mask may suggest that this character in the story is a person_____.
A.who is honestB.who is loyal
C.who betrays someone or somethingD.who is responsible
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Rapid Development of Beijing Opera
B.Shadow Puppetry: Traditional Arts and Crafts

7 . A new app aims to help parents interpret what their baby wants based on the sound of their cry. The free app ChatterBaby, which was released last month, analyzes the acoustic (声学的) features of a baby’s cry, to help parents understand whether their child might be hungry, fussy or in pain. While critics say caregivers should not rely too much on their smartphone, others say it’s a helpful tool for new or tired parents.

Ariana Anderson, a mother of four, developed the app. She originally designed the technology to help deaf parents better understand why their baby was upset, but soon realized it could be a helpful tool for all new parents.

To build a database, Anderson and her team uploaded 2,000 audio samples of infant(婴儿) cries. She used cries recorded during ear piercings and vaccinations to distinguish pain cries. And to create a baseline for the other two categories, a group of moms had to agree on whether the cry was either hungry or fussy.

Anderson’s team continues to collect data and hopes to make the app more accurate by asking parents to get specific about what certain sounds mean.

Pediatrician Eric Ball pointed out that evaluating cries can never be an exact science. “I think that all of the apps and technology that new parents are using now can be helpful but need to be taken seriously,” Ball said ,“ I do worry that some parents will get stuck in big data and turn their parenting into basically a spreadsheet(电子表格) which I think will take away the love and caring that parents are supposed to be providing for the children. ”

But Anderson said the aim of the app is to have parents interpret the results, not to provide a yes or no answer. The Bells, a couple using this app, say it’s a win-win. They believe they are not only helping their baby now but potentially others in the future.

1. How does the app judge what babies want?
A.By collecting data.
B.By recording all the sounds.
C.By analyzing the sound of their cries.
D.By asking parents about specific messages.
2. What was the app designed for in the beginning?
A.All new parents.B.Deaf parents.
C.Ariana Anderson.D.Crying babies.
3. What is Ball’s opinion about the app?
A.Parents should use the app wisely.
B.The app can create an accurate result.
C.Parents and babies are addicted to the app.
D.The app makes babies lose love and caring.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Parents should not rely too much on their smartphones.
B.A new app helps parents figure out why their babies are crying.
C.Parents can deal with babies’ hunger with the help of a new app.
D.A new app called ChatterBaby can prevent babies from crying.

8 . Daniel Anderson, a famous psychologist, believes it’s important to distinguish television’s influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn’t really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children’s minds.

One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images (影像). Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.

Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents’ educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads.” Anderson says.

Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ (智商) scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.

For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.

1. By watching TV, children learn _________.
A.images through wordsB.more than explicit meanings
C.more about images than wordsD.little about people’s psychology
2. Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?
A.Radio-listeningB.Television-watching

A.the more a child watches TV, the smarter he is
B.the younger a child is, the more he watches TV
C.the smarter a child is, the less likely he gets addicted to TV
D.the less a child watches TV, the better he performs at school
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To advise on the educational use of TV.B.To describe TV’s harmful effects on children.
C.To explain traditional views on TV influences.D.To present Anderson’s unconventional ideas.

9 . Thirteen years ago, the Planet Earth wildlife documentary took us all on an amazing journey. We went from deep rainforests to the bottom of the ocean. Now a new one ,Our Planet, will let us see different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world. The documentary covers 50 countries and areas. It took more than four years to produce it.

10 . In the United States, the baby boomer generation(婴儿潮一代) include those who were born in the time after World War II. Those babies have retired or are now reaching the retirement age. As these adults age, many of their adult children worry about how to take care of their aging parents. In the United States it is not common for several generations to live under one roof. Once children grow up and get married, they move out, leaving their aging parents to care for themselves. When these aging parents can no longer take care of themselves because of age or illness, it is not uncommon for adult children in the US to place their elderly parents in a nursing home.

A nursing home is a place that offers care for the elderly and ill. As the name suggests, nursing homes have professionals including nurses, doctors and social workers to help aging adults deal with the challenges of daily life. And their mental health could be guaranteed for elderly people to get relaxed, accompanied by those of the same age. Most nursing homes also have social activities for the elderly to participate in and keep active. These activities range from games to dance classes, and movie nights. Nursing homes are supposed to provide three nutritious meals for their residents.

Nursing homes are controversial, however. There have been cases across the country of staff in nursing homes treating the elderly residents badly and even robbing them. There are different states and federal agencies that are supposed to oversee(监管) nursing homes. Some people feel that it should be the responsibility of family members, especially adult children, to care for their aging or sick parents. However, many adult children have their own children and families to take care of, and do not have the means to care for their elderly parents; others worry about medical skills needed if their elderly parents are seriously ill. And these problems of caring for parents are bothering more and more adults in the US at present.

1. The first paragraph mainly about___________.

A.To discuss how to care for aging parents.
B.To ask the government to oversee nursing homes.
C.To prove nursing homes do more harm than good.
D.To show problems faced by American adult children.
