2 . My family lives in Texas. I was born and brought up in Texas and I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. However, around my second year in the law school, I wanted to make a great change, which was almost unheard of for Texans: I wanted to leave!

I realized this after completing my first-year internship (实习期). I knew I wanted something different and my chance came during the 2011 Super Bowl in Dallas. A snowstorm blanketed the entire city in snow and thousands of people were gathered. I overheard that StubHub, a big company from a great city, San Francisco, was throwing a party next door to my hotel. I thought if I could get an internship, I could leave for the summer and at least see what it was like. Yes, it was a huge leap. I told myself I was ready.

There was just one problem: I wasn't invited to the StubHub party. But you know I’m the type of person who goes for something she wants. Needless to say, I crashed the party and found my way to the president. I kindly introduced myself and then asked if they had a legal internship program. Guess what? They accepted my request to be a legal intern, even though no such program existed.

Although the legal department didn't have a permanent position for me, the experience has shaped my life Working for a great company in San Francisco, I’m incredibly happy for making my decision to leave Texas.

By leaving Texas, I learned that it is so much more rewarding to try the unfamiliar than to stay in the comfortable. Exploring the unfamiliar is how you'll understand what fits your life. I say, dive in first.

D.You should listen to your family to learn about your potential.
4. Which of the following words can best describe the author?

3 . Yesterday morning I was having breakfast in the 37th floor club lounge(休息室) at the InterContinental Bangkok, quite enjoying my conversation with Julia. She is a lovely Bavarian lady who works in the club lounge. Suddenly I felt really dizzy(晕眩的). I hadn't drunk anything the night before and had got a great night of sleep, so I found that a bit strange. But it continued. After a few moments I realized what was going on -- I wasn't dizzy, but it was an earthquake. For over 20 seconds the club floor was shaking.

Julia tried to remain calm and asked us to go down the stairs. When I walked past the rooftop pool, I saw water rushing out of it, which terrified me even more. I skipped down the 37 flights of stairs as if I were taking part in the Olympics.

However, as I was trying to get to the ground floor, I found it strange that nobody else was escaping. Eventually I made it to the ground floor. Again, I had never been in an earthquake before, so I had no sense of what it was like during an earthquake. I was kind of expecting disorder on the streets, a thousand people in the hall, and a general Armageddon style setting.

Sure enough I hurriedly got through the doors on the first floor and went straight to the reception desk, thinking the girl at the desk knew what was going on. But she looked quite confused, not knowing what I was talking about. Then I asked another one but I got the same response. I believed the world was coming to an end, while everyone looked at me as if nothing had happened.

Well, as it turned out, nothing did happen to them. Clearly there was an earthquake in Myanmar, and it was only felt at the top of some of the taller buildings in Bangkok.

Julia kept the club lounge closed for safety for some time, while I was happy just to be on the ground level.

1. How did the author most probably respond after knowing his situation?
A.He remained calm.
B.He became frightened.
C.He asked others to go down the stairs.
D.He thought for a while about what to do.
2. What did the author find after he got to the ground floor?
A.Nothing seemed to have happened.
B.Many people were trying to escape.
C.People were looking at him nervously.
D.There were no other people in the street.
3. Why did the girl at the reception desk look confused?
A.Because no one was running.
B.Because the author looked strange.
C.Because she didn't feel any shaking at all.
D.Because she didn't speak the author's language.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.A joke others played on the author.
B.How the author survived an earthquake.
C.The author's most unforgettable experience.
D.The author's experience in an earthquake.

5 . Please take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal. Imagine telling someone you meet today what you’re going to do. Imagine their congratulations and their high image of you. Doesn't it feel good to say it out loud? Don’t you feel one step closer already? Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it.

Any time you have a goal, there is some work that needs to be done to achieve it. Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you’d actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and he acknowledges it, psychologists have found it's called a "social reality". The mind is kind of tricked into a feeling that it's already done. And then. because you’ve felt that satisfaction. you’re less motivated to do the actual and necessary hard work. This goes against the traditional wisdom that we should tell our friends our goals, right?

In 1982, Peter Gollwitzer, a professor of psychology, wrote a whole book about this. And in 2009, he did some new tests, which were published. It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests—everyone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment to this goal to the room, and half didn't. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they could stop at any time. Finally, those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal.

1. What do the words "social reality" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Necessary hard work.B.Completion of a goal
C.A sense of satisfaction.D.People’s judgement.
2. What does Peter Gollwitzer try to tell us?
A.Writing down the goal is very helpful.
B.Achieving the personal goal needs more time.
C.Keeping the goal secret makes people work harder.
D.Making the goal public makes people less satisfied.
3. How did Peter Gollwitzer prove his idea about people's goal?
A.By giving figures.B.By giving examples.
C.By making a survey.D.By making comparison tests
4. What will probably happen if you tell your friends your goal?
A.You'll be more confident
B.You will not gain satisfaction.
C.You'll be less likely to realize it.
D.You'll be much more motivated.

7 . I grew up in an age when I had to wait for almost everything. Classic movies were shown on television. And, of course, one had to be home at the appointed time to watch them. “The Wizard of Oz” for example, was broadcast only once a year. The steadily heightening sense of expectation as the broadcast date approached was almost too much for my 10-year-old heart to bear.

And then there was money. The banks did business on weekdays only. They opened at 9 and closed at 4. You needed money but didn't make it to the bank on time? Well, check under the sofa cushions or borrow from family or friends.

Such was the world as recently as the 1970s. Everything seemed to operate on a strict clock, and the words “on demand” had no meaning. This was the way things worked, and it was all we knew.

And then, seemingly overnight, everything changed. It suddenly seemed as if I never had to be anywhere at an appointed time, because everything was available all the time. The changed times, on the other hand, have encouraged nothing less than a constant sense of urgency, which is ironic (讽刺性的): If we can have anything we want anytime we want it, should’t we be less hurried? The answer is that an “on demand” lifestyle has created an appetite for speed: If I can have something this fast, why can’t I have it faster? Recently I read a book that has “FSTR” (get it?) written across its cover. One of its metaphors (隐喻) was telling: First there was the fresh-squeezed lemon; then there was the lemonade mix; now we just buy the lemonade by the gallon (加仑).

And so, on this hot day, I went to the supermarket and bought three fresh lemons. I squeezed them into a tall glass. Then I filled the glass with cold water, ice, and a teaspoon of sugar. Fresh lemonade in hand, I went outside, sat in my lawn chair, and looked out over the river.

Yes, time passes quickly. But, now and then, it doesn’t have to.

1. How did the young author feel about watching The Wizard of Oz?
A.Surprised.B.Excited.C.Touched.D.Worried.
2. What’s the author’s tone in writing about the book he read recently?
A.Humorous.B.Optimistic.C.Opposing.D.Cautious.
3. What does the author try to convey by making lemonade himself?
A.His enjoyment of spending a lazy day at home.
B.His disapproval of the demands of a hurried age.
C.His satisfaction of making use of modern technology.
D.His disappointment at the lemonade in the supermarket.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.We waited, and it was worth it
B.We worry, but it makes no sense
C.Why does time pass quickly now?
D.How do we balance speed and happiness?

8 . My dad passed away peacefully at home yesterday, surrounded by his family.

We are feeling grief but also gratitude. My dad’s passing was not unexpected - he was 94 and his health had been failing-so we have all had a long time to reflect on just how lucky we are to have had this amazing man in our lives for so many years.

My dad had a great influence on my drive. When I was a kid, he never let me put very little effort into things I was good at, and he always pushed me to try things I hated. He modeled an amazing work ethic(道德准则)as one of the hardest-working and most respected lawyers in Seattle.

My dad's influence on our philanthropy(慈善行为)was just big. Throughout my childhood, he and my mom taught me by example what generosity looked like in how they used their time and resources. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation would not be what it is today without my dad. More than anyone else, he shaped the values of the foundation.

Finally, my dad had a positive influence on my most important roles - husband and father. When I am at my best, I know it is because of what I learned from my dad about respecting women and guiding children's choices with love and respect.

Dad wrote me a letter on my 50th birthday. “Over time, ” he wrote, “I have told you and others not to overuse the adjective incredible. This is a word with huge meaning to be used only in extraordinary settings. What I want to say, here, is simply that the experience of being your father has been…incredible.”

I know he would not want me to overuse the word, but there is no danger of doing that now. The experience of being the son of Bill Gates was INCREDIBLE. People used to ask my dad if he was the real Bill Gates. The truth is, he was everything I try to be. I will miss him every day.

1. The underlined part “my drive” in paragraph 3 refers to________.
A.my attitude to wealthB.my interest in what is round
C.my choice of workD.my effort to something
2. Based on the text, which word can be used to describe the author's father?
A.Honest.B.Creative.C.GenerousD.Confident.
3. At the end of the text the author implies that________.
A.he regarded his father as his role model
B.his father developed a strict parenting style
C.people annoyed him by asking who the real Bill Gates was.
D.the family were not allowed to use the adjective “incredible”
4. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To remember his beloved father
B.To inform people of his father’s death.
C.To reflect on his relationship with his father.
D.To explain how his father got on with the family.

9 . I made my decision to start my own company and leave my stable position after attending a regional sales meeting. The vice-president of our company delivered a speech that changed my life. He asked us. "If genie(精灵)would grant you three wishes what would they be?" After giving us a moment to write down the three wishes, he then asked us. "Why do you need genie?" I would never forget the power I felt at that moment.

I realized that everything I had accomplished had prepared me for this moment. I was ready and did not need a genie's help to become a professional speaker.

When I tearfully told my boss my plans, this incredible leader whom I respect so much replied, "Go ahead with reckless abandon and it will pay off."

Having made that decision, I was immediately tested. One week after I quit mine, my husband was laid off(解雇)from his job. We had recently bought a new home me and needed both incomes to make the monthly mortgage payment and now we were done to no income. It was tempting to turn back to my former company, knowing they wanted me to stay, but I was certain that if I went back, I would never leave. I decided I still wanted to move forward rather than end up with a mouth full of "if onlys" later on. A motivational speaker was born.

When I held fast to my dream, even during the tough times, the miracles really began to happen. In a short time period my husband found a better job. We didn't miss a mortgage payment. And I was able to book several speaking engagements with new clients. I discovered the incredible power of dreams. I loved my old job, my peers and the company I left, but it was time to get on with my dream. To celebrate my success, I had a local artist paint my new office as a garden. At the top of one wall she wrote, "The world always makes way for the dreamer."

1. What motivation did the author get from her vice-president?
A.Why she needed a genie to help realize her dream.
B.How could she realize her dream by a grantable genie.
C.She did not have to rely on a genie at all.
D.What wishes could a genie grant her.
2. What attitude does the author's boss have to her plans?
A.Angry.B.Indifferent.C.Pitiful.D.Supportive.
3. What happened after the couple lost their jobs?
A.The author came back to her former company.
B.They were determined and worked hard.
C.Their newly-bought house was taken back by the bank.
D.The author's former boss gave her husband a better job
4. What does the text enlighten(启发)us?
A.Opportunity always comes to those who are prepared.
B.You will succeed as long as you stick to your dream.
C.It is better to teach a man to fish than to give him fish.
D.Helping others will benefit yourself as well.

10 . Have you ever lined up? How do you feel? Most of us line up a large number of times during our lives. Waiting lines are such a thorn in our sides at popular destinations — Disney World, the Empire State Building — that many of us are willing to pay to avoid lines.

Culture has much to do with how we handle waiting lines. The British are the best people in the world at waiting in lines. I’ve never seen a people less concerned with lines than the British.

If you’ve been to Wimbledon you know what I mean. There are no online ticket sales for this fortnight of tennis. You queue up for hours, often a half day or more with 8,0000 others on a golf course near the stadium, suffering whatever rain, wind or sun.

It is an unwritten but ever present rule at Wimbledon that you never talk about or even admit that the queue exists. You’ll hear and participate in every conversation imaginable while waiting. It’s not really possible to jump or break-in a queue at Wimbledon because of the stewards and the time-dated stamps they hand out, and it’s considered bad behavior anywhere by the British.

Some places such as restaurants in Canada and in the States are getting wise. The host or hostess greets you, and says politely. “Sorry, but it will be about 45 minutes!” Almost always you’ll be seated in just 20 to 30 minutes. It’s called managing expectations. But, now you’re very happy as if you had something to do with getting a table earlier.

Finally, technology promises to save some queuing time. In the years ahead, stores will adopt Apple’s methods, with every salesperson capable of taking payments. Then the lines will disappear.

With age, perhaps, comes wisdom. I do whatever I can to avoid activities where queues are quite common. But you can’t always avoid lines, so I make the best of them. I usually start conversations with total strangers in a queue... at the very least you open yourself up to an opportunity for an engaging conversation. Queues, like life, have a lot to do with attitudes.

1. Why does the author say that waiting lines are a thorn in our sides?
A.Lining up makes us hurt.B.We have to pay to avoid lines.
C.We spend most of our life queuing.D.Waiting lines are unavoidable in our life.
2. While queuing in Wimbledon ________.
A.you will be fined if you break inB.everybody is used to waiting long
C.people prove the existence of queuesD.the waiting time depends on the weather
3. What does the underlined part “managing expectations” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Reducing waiting times at queue lines.B.Haring high expectation for customers.
C.Tying lo live up to customers’ expectations.D.Letting customers wait shorter than they expected.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards line?
A.Positive.B.Unclear.C.Annoyed.D.Indifferent.
