2 . If history doesn't quite repeat itself, it certainly rhymes. With demand for bicycles rocketing, and nations preparing to spend billions of dollars to redesign their cities with a new focus on cycling and walking, it's worth remembering how the invention of the bicycle in the late 19th century transformed societies the world over. It was a hugely revolutionary technology, easily equal to the smartphone today. For a few heady years in the 1890s, the bicycle was the best must-have—swift, affordable, stylish transportation that could take you anywhere you cared to go, anytime you liked, for free.

Almost anyone could learn to ride, and almost everyone did. The sultan of Zanzibar(a former Muslim country)took up cycling. So did the king of Russia. But it was the middle and working classes around the globe that truly made the bicycle their own. For the first time in history, the masses were mobile, able to come and go as they pleased. No more need for expensive horses and carriages.

Society was transformed. Women were especially enthusiastic, abandoning their burden some Victorian skirts, adopting reasonable clothes, and taking to the road in groups. “I think bicycling has done more to liberate women than anything else in the world,” Susan B. Anthony, the American champion of women's suffrage(选举权)said in an interview with The New York Sunday World in 1896. “I stand and feel thrilled every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel...the picture of unrestricted womanhood.”

By 1898 cycling had become such a popular activity in the United States that The New York Journal of Commerce claimed it was costing restaurants and theaters more than $ 100 million a year in lost business. Bicycle manufacturing became one of America's biggest and most advanced industries. A third of all patent applications were bicycle-related—so many that the US patent office had to build a separate building to deal with them all.

The arrival of the bicycle touched virtually every aspect of life—art, music, literature, fashion, and even the human gene pool. English songwriter Henry Dacre scored a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1892 with Daisy Bell and its famous refrain(副歌)A Bicycle Built for Two.

3. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Bicycle-related patent applications.B.Interviews with cyclists.

6 . Animal rights activists respect animals because they understand animals have a place in the world. Zoos, especially the ones that are doing everything right, become a headache for the animal rights activists.

Zoo supporters argue that they save endangered species and educate the public, but many animal rights activists believe the costs are more than the benefits, and the violation(违反) of the rights of the individual animals is unreasonable. Roadside zoos, petting zoos, and smaller animal exhibitors tend to offer narrow space for the animals, keeping them in pens or cages. Sometimes, a tiger or bear will live with cold concrete(混凝土)and metal bars for their entire lives. Larger, trusted zoos try to avoid these operations by offering excellent treatment to the animals. However, to animal rights activists, the problem is not how well the animals are treated, but whether we have a right to limit (限制)them for our delight or “education”.

To zoo supporters, by bringing people and animals together, zoos educate the public and promote an appreciation of the animals, encouraging people to protect the animals. Zoos save endangered species by bringing them into a safe environment, where they are protected from poachers(偷猎者), habitat loss, hunger, and predators(捕食者). Many zoos also have various programs for endangered species. In the wild, these individuals might have trouble finding mates and multiplying(繁殖). A good zoo provides an enriched habitat in which the animals are never bored, are well cared for, and have plenty of space. Besides, zoos are a tradition, and a visit to a zoo is a healthy, family activity.

In the case of zoos, both sides—animal rights activists and zoo supporters will argue that their side saves animals. Whether or not zoos benefit the animal community, they certainly do make money. As long as there is need for zoos, they will continue to exist. We can start by making sure that conditions are the best possible for the animals who are limited to zoos.

1. Which of the following statements do the zoo supporters agree with?
A.Zoos can offer all the animals foods when they are in trouble.
B.Zoos give people more chances to educate animals.

7 . Renewable energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind and solar farms, have so far been subsidized(资助)by government support schemes. This has led to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

However, the most recently approved offshore wind projects will most likely operate with ‘negative subsidies’—paying money back to the government. The money will go towards reducing household energy bills as the offshore wind farms start producing power in the mid-2020s.

This is the conclusion of an analysis by an international team led by Imperial College London researchers published today in Nature Energy.

Lead researcher Dr Malte Jansen, from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial, said: “Offshore wind power will soon be so cheap to produce that it will undercut fossil-fueled power stations and may, be the cheapest form of energy for the UK. Energy subsidies used to push up energy bills, but within a few years cheap renewable energy will see them brought down for the first time. This is an astonishing development.”

The analysis for five countries in Europe, including the UK, focused on a series of government auctions(拍卖)for offshore wind farms between February 2015 and September 2019. Companies that want to build wind farms bid in the auctions by stating the price at which they will sell the energy they produce to the government.

These are known as ‘contracts for difference’ or CIDs. If a company's bid is higher than the wholesale electricity price on the UK market once the wind farm is up and running, then the company will receive a subsidy from the government to top up the price.

However, if the stated price(规定价格)is less than the wholesale price, then the company will pay the government back the difference. This payback is then passed through to consumer's energy bills, reducing the amount that homes and businesses will pay for electricity.

The winning companies said they could build new offshore wind farms for around £40 per megawatt hour(MWh)of power. This was a new record set by these wind farms with bids 30 percent lower than just two years earlier.

1. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Offshore wind farms to be built in the UK could reduce household energy bills by producing electricity very cheaply.
B.Offshore wind farms will not be subsidized by government in the near future.
C.The importance of CDs.
D.The operation of negative subsidies
2. According to Paragraph 2, offshore wind farms _______.
A.will stop producing power in the mid-2020sB.are paying money back to the government
C.will help reduce household energy billsD.will all operate with negative subsidies'
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The renewable energy projects will lead to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.
B.The company whose bid is less than the wholesale electricity price will receive a subsidy.
C.The stated electricity price is now higher than the wholesale electricity price.
D.Fossil-fueled power will be soon produced cheaply,

8 . When Earth was just a tiny young thing,it birthed many new continents - then it swallowed them all up, leaving just a few traces behind, a new study shows.

These first continents had a special skill for living fast and dying young, but in doing so, they paved the way for solid continents that eventually led to the emergence of plate tectonics(版块运动), the new study suggests.

For hundreds of millions of years, the current continents have been more or less stable. But very little is known about the continents that existed early on in Earth's history.

To learn more about that early history, the researchers used computers to model the interactions of rock and magma(岩浆) in the Earth’s crust(地壳) and below. The modeling showed that the earliest continents, known as the Hadean (4.6 to 4.0 billion years ago), were weak and likely to destruction. Modern continents have a comprehensive high tensile strength, meaning it’s hard to tear them apart by stretching.

By the time the Archean (4.0 billion to 2.5 billion years ago) began ending the Hadean, the crust which had first formed was almost entirely replaced by the seeds of the modern continents.

In a sense, the researchers found, those lost Hadean continents made the later, more stable continents possible.

The emergence of continents at the close of the Hadean also contributed fertilizer that would later help seed life on Earth, the researchers wrote. Bits of them broke off and entered the atmosphere and oceans, providing necessary nutrients for the life forms that soon emerged.

1. Compared with the modern continents, the Hadean was________.
A.youngerB.firmerC.weakerD.bigger
2. What is true about the Hadean according to the researchers?
A.It existed 4.0 million years ago.B.It disappeared before the Archean began.
C.It helped make more stable continents.D.It provided all the necessary nutrients.
3. How does the author support his ideas?
A.By listing researchers’ findings.B.By giving a lot of examples.
C.By making comparisons.D.By listing a lot of numbers.
4. Where can we probably read the passage?
A.A science fiction.B.A science magazine.
C.A travel brochure.D.An encyclopedia.
