3 . The holiday season is a joyful time — packed with parties and traditions. But for millions of Americans living with depression, anxiety, addiction or other mental illnesses, the season can be especially challenging. According to a survey by National Alliance on Mental Illness, about 64% of those with mental illness say that the holidays make things worse. Therefore, it's imperative that we look out for friends, family and community members who struggle with mental health to assist them.
As a neuroscientist studying the brain biology of depression and anxiety, I am encouraged by the new tools and available behavioral treatments, but these treatments are only helpful if
people access them. Too often, fear of judgment and pressures from peers, employers, or family members cause many to avoid mental health services.
The holiday season is actually a perfect time to fight mental health problems. We can all watch out for signs of mental illness and depression in friends and loved ones — including feelings of worry or sadness, and extreme changes in mood.
All of us can play a role in relieving mental health problems, caring for one another, and encouraging each other to seek out professional help. In addition to one-on-one support, we can go a step further to build support networks.
People who recently attended a conversation shared personal stories about their mental health journeys. Attendees received input from mental health professionals and local resource groups. Many said they had waited for years to talk about these topics but had no place to discuss them. And they felt better informed about resources for addressing mental health challenges, hoping this kind of respectful, honest and informative conversation can take place in communities across the country.

6 . Record fires sweeping across the Amazon this month have been grabbing global headlines as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will aggravate climate change crisis and threaten biodiversity (生物多样性).
As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called "the lungs of the world". It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million local people. The vast rainforest plays an important role in the world's ecosystem because they absorb heat instead of it being reflected back into the atmosphere. They also store carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, ensuring that less carbon is released, mitigating the effects of climate change.
"Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity," Thomas Lovejoy, an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic. "The overwhelming threat is that a lot of carbon goes into the atmosphere," he stressed. "In the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon mu:st be protected/5 U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.
Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago. A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first eight months of 2019, up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018, INPE said. "We estimate that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have decreased something between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months," Carlos Nobre, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose degradation could have severe consequences for global climate and rainfall. The extent of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has transcended (超出)Brazil's borders, reaching Peruvian, Paraguayan and Bolivian regions.

7 . From ancient stories to modern researches, the label(标签)attached to being left-handed is undeniable. Left-handed people, or “lefties” as they are often called, are generally believed to be good at art — Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso and Michelangelo are all left-handed .
Our brain is divided into two parts: the left hemisphere(大脑半球)and the right hemisphere. The left hemisphere, linked to logic and analysis, is responsible for the right side of the body. The right hemisphere, linked to creativity and imagination, controls the left side of the body. So, people tend to believe lefties are controlled by the right side of the brain, and are more creative than right-handers. Some also think that lefties may not be as good as right-handers in mathematics and problem-solving skills.
However; a recent study carried out by scientists from the University of Liverpool in the UK and the University of Milan in Italy proved this theory wrong. The study involved(涉及)more than 2,300 students in Italy aged between 6 and 17 years old. They were asked to complete several mathematical tasks of different levels. It turned out the left-handers outperformed the others when the tasks involved difficult problem-solving. This pattern was particularly clear in male adolescents. However; when it came to simple arithmetic, there was no difference between left-handers aud right-handers.
It was also discovered that those who are “severely” right-handed performed less well in all the experiments compared to “medium” right-handers and left-handers.
“Taken together, these findings show that handedness does influence abilities to some degree,” the study’s authors wrote. However, “handedness is just an indirect expression of brain function,” wrote psychology professor Giovanni Sala from the University of Liverpool in the UK, the lead author of the study. Sala also noted that only one third of people with a highly-developed right side of the brain are left-handed. It means that there are lots of right-handed people with a similar brain function as left-handers.
1. The author begins the text by ________.A.telling some ancient stories |
B.giving examples of artworks |
C.introducing a modern research |
D.presenting conventional wisdom |

B.People with a highly-developed right hemisphere are most likely lefties. |
C.The “severely” right-handed are far better at simple arithmetic than lefties. |
D.Right-handers didn’t perform as well as lefties when handling tough problems. |
A.a medical report | B.a science magazine . |
C.a biology textbook | D.an education essay |
8 . Last week, my wife and I took possession of this beauty,3-story country house in Pelham, New York. We haven't moved yet: the place is badly in need of renovation(翻新),which will happen a lot more quickly if our stuff isn't in the way. We still own our NYC co-op,and it won't close until July or August. We intend to get every last day of city living that we can.
But now seems as good a time as any to put the blog on hold—a step I've been considering for a while. I've posted 1,010 restaurant reviews in just over 11 years, which averages out to nearly two reviews per week, for roughly a decade. That’s an awfully long time. In recent months, it has felt more like a burden, and less of the joy it originally was.
Of course, that burden came entirely from myself: this blog has never accepted advertising. No one's livelihood—and certainly not mine—depended on its existence. Yet, having created this tiny space in my little corner of the Internet, with a very small but rather appreciative (and appreciated) amount of loyal readers, for a long time I fell I have to keep it going.
But my free time over the next several months will be increasingly taken up with a complex renovation, moving house, getting to know a new neighborhood, and a quite different lifestyle than I've been accustomed to. Something needs to be edited out? to make room for all that, and the blog is it.
If our move to the suburbs provides a convenient excuse, I might have reached the same decision earlier before that : the sense that my food blogging had fallen into stereotypes (陈词烂调)was in my mind even before we started house-hunting, although it certainly became more clear after that. I think I'm going to enjoy dining out for its own sake,as it used to be: no more photos,no more “writing the review” in my head as I eat.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the pleasure of dining out, which I love as much as ever. My wife and I intend to keep up our weekly Manhattan “date nights”. I still work in the city, and Pelham isn't all that far away—one of the reasons we chose it.
Will the blog return after we’re settled in our new home? Surely not with the frequency it has been, and perhaps not at all. As I write this, I’m feeling like I won’t miss it.
1. What’s NOT the reason for the author to put his blog on hold?A.He is moving to the countryside and doesn’t have enough time. |
B.It has brought him more burden than joy. |
C.This blog hasn’t received any advertising profit, which made him disappointed. |
D.Food blogging lacks creativity for him and he wants to enjoy the pure joy of dining out. |
A.He depended on the blog to make a living. |
B.He felt it his responsibility not to let his loyal readers down. |
C.His free time has been increasingly occupied with other stuff. |
D.He found it hard to adapt to a different lifestyle. |
A.The author will soon continue his blog after he settles in his new home. |
B.The author will not continue his blog after he settles in his new home. |
C.The author hasn’t decided whether to continue his blog even after he settles in his new home. |
D.The author has decided to decrease the frequency of posting the blog after he settles in his new home. |
A.A personal blog. | B.A fashion magazine. |
C.A scientific report. | D.A travel brochure. |
9 . After disappearing for over 19 years, measles (麻疹) is making a comeback in America. Since January 2019, the disease has infected more than 700 people, mostly small children, and the number seems to be increasing daily.
Measles is an infectious disease that typically begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Many people also lose their appetites and feel sleepy. About three to four days after the symptoms start, the person breaks out into a rash (皮疹) that begins on the face at the hairline and then spreads to the neck and the rest of the body.
In healthy people, the recovery, which takes between two to three weeks, starts soon after the rash begins. However, for about 40 percent of patients — mainly kids under the age of five or older adults — the disease often leads to pneumonia (肺炎), which, if left untreated, could result in death.
The recent outbreak is thought to have been caused by travelers picking up the virus in a country where the disease is still existing and exposing it to an unvaccinated (未接种的) community in the US. In New York, it was carried back by someone who had recently visited Israel, which is currently undergoing a significant measles, while in Washington, “patient zero” was infected by a type that is currently circulating in Europe.
To limit the spread of the disease before it gets out of hand, US health officials are attempting to educate communities with high rates of unvaccinated children. They are also urging adults to consult with their physicians and get injected if considered necessary by the doctor.
Hopefully, health officials worldwide will be able to convince parents that vaccinating their children will protect, not harm, them.
1. What is the third paragraph mainly about?A.The symptoms of measles. |

10 . If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.
1. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________A.provide some key facts about Confucius |
B.show great respect for the ancient thinker |
C.attract the readers’ interest in the subject |
D.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations |
A.Forgotten Wisdom in America | B.Huge Fans of the Chinese Language |
C.Chinese Culture for Westerners | D.Old Thinker with a Big Future |
A.a newspaper | B.a history paper |
C.a philosophy textbook | D.a p biography |
