1 . I look around and can't recognize where I am. I see my friends gathered by a stage where music is playing and I run over. As I begin running towards them, they become further and further away. I keep calling for them, but no one hears me. I start hearing a distant alarm-like sound and I am transported away. I woke up in at a loss sitting in my bed. “Oh, it was only a dream,” I said to myself. I have always had vivid and intense dreams.

Today, dreaming is being studied even more than ever. Some say that dreams are how your receptors (受体) make sense of random thoughts while you sleep. Some say that you can't dream of a face you have never seen before, so everyone you see in your dreams you have at least laid eyes on at one time or another.

Other people think dreams are ways of expressing stress or internal feelings you may be experiencing. A lot of people say that they have dreams about being chased (追逐).

A common interpretation of the “being chased” dream is that you are feeling threatened. Some dream interpretation sites say you should try to reflect on what or who is chasing you to get a better idea of what is making you feel this way.

Another dream that is often experienced is flying. This dream has a much more positive interpretation, which is that you are feeling free or have broken out of a bad situation such as a relationship turned sour or a job you hate.

Unfortunately, if you even remember your dreams at all, you forget half of your dream within five minutes of waking up and within 10 minutes, you usually forget 90 percent of it.

Dreamologists who devote time to the study of dreams, suggest if you want to try to remember and study your dreams you should keep a journal beside your bed and jot down what you dreamt as soon as you wake up so you can reflect on it later.

3 . Kids getting addicted to smartphones or small devices probably make every parent worried as they have to struggle to get them to stop playing with them. Often, when parents take away the smartphone, these kids will get angry or cry.

A few days ago, citizens were amused when photos of a little girl with “panda eyes” spread on the Internet. Apparently, this was a trick played by the girl's parents as she was too addicted to her smartphone, and they wanted to break the habit.

When the girl was sleeping, the mother decided to secretly apply black eyeshadow around her daughter's eyes and it worked. “After waking up and seeing herself in the mirror, she screamed. I told her it's because she played on the phone so much,” said the mother. And the mother warned her not to play so much on the phone anymore.

It was reported that the incident had happened in Thailand and the photos spread quickly. Citizens were divided on this, with some of them feeling that it was a funny joke that would do no harm while some of them said that it was bad to do that for the kids. Some parents would try it on their kids, while some said they needed to be strict with their children's screen time.

However, Public Health of Malaysia has shared a post warning parents not to do so with their kids. They said that parents should rethink this joke as it could cause psychological scars to the kids. They explained that scaring your child with a joke could result in an experience that stayed in their long- term memory and this was not a good way to break a bad habit. It was up to the parents on how to teach and educate their children. Every parent has their own unique way of raising their children. These kids need to know about the effects, results, and responsibilities from their own actions.

3. What kind of effect might the joke have on children?
A.Developing other bad habits.B.Lack of a sense of responsibility.

4 . About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it’s safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases, a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the differences between green and blue. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shade of green-a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of cones in our eyes, we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

1. Why do some people say it’s safer to be driven by women?
A.Women are more careful.
B.There are fewer color-blind women.
C.Women are fonder of driving than men.
D.Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
2. Which of the statements about the color-blind is true?
A.Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.
B.None of them can see deep red.
C.None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.
D.All of them see everything in shades of green.
3. According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can____
A.tell different shapes
B.see in a weak light
C.tell different colors
D.kill mosquitoes
4. In which magazine would you most likely find this passage?
A.International Eye Science
B.Let’s Explore Nature
C.Collections of Women’s Studies
D.Global Warning News

7 . Optimism (乐观) doesn’t mean paying no attention to things that cause stress. But when bad things happen, optimistic people are less likely to be unhappy about themselves and more likely to see the bad things as something that lasts a short time.

A new research has found a direct connection between optimism and healthier diet and exercise behaviors, as well as better heart health, a stronger immune system (免疫系统), better lung function, and lower death risk. “Optimistic people, regardless of sex, often have goals and the confidence to reach them,” Lee said. “Those goals could include healthy habits that contribute to a longer life.”

Studies find only about 25% of our optimism is controlled by our genes (基因), and the rest is up to us. It turns out we can actually train our brain to be more positive. Researchers studied the brains of monks (僧侣) and found surprising results: Tens of thousands of hours of meditation(冥思) had changed the function (机能) of their brains, which support positive qualities. And that may be key in producing the effect on the body.

There are simple mental exercises to develop an optimistic attitude. One of the most effective ways to increase optimism is called the “Best Possible Self” method. That is to imagine ourselves in a future in which we have achieved all our life goals. And keeping a diary in which we list the positive experiences we had can also help shape our attitude. Taking a few minutes each day to write down what makes us thankful can improve our view on life, too.

8 . Mankind’s most famous “eye in the sky” turned 30 this year, taking a beautiful image of “space clouds” to celebrate.

The Hubble Space Telescope, known to most simply as “Hubble”, was sent into space on April 24, 1990. The telescope, one of our best space exploration tools, uses a large mirror to collect light and direct it into a powerful digital camera. This allows it to see parts of outer space that are located 10 to 15 billion light-years away.

Each year on its birthday, the telescope takes a new image to celebrate. On its 30th birthday, Hubble took an image titled “Cosmic Reef”. The picture shows two big clouds of cosmic dust and gas: the giant red nebula NGC 2014 and a smaller blue nebula called NGC 2020, according to Space. The title of the image comes from NGC 2014’s appearance, as it looks like a large reef of red coral.

Hubble has made many important discoveries over the last 30 years. For example, the telescope helped us discover four of Pluto’s five moons. This discovery made it possible to plan a mission for the New Horizons probe, which took never-before-seen images of Pluto in 2015. The telescope has also taken photos of pulsating stars. The regular pulses of light that come from these stars allow us to calculate the age of the universe, which is currently believed to be 13.7 billion years old.

But Hubble’s work is not done yet. It is expected to continue working through the 2020s, when it will be joined by its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, according to CNET.

1. What is the text mainly about?
A.How the Hubble Space Telescope works.
B.The Hubble telescope’s 30th anniversary.

A.It was the best space exploration tool.
B.It was designed to be in service for about 40 years.
C.It can see the whole outer space.

9 . Barcelona’s opera house has celebrated its reopening to the public since the coronavirus pandemic put the world into a huge horror, but their opening night had an unusual audience. For its first concert, the theater refused the usual crowd of people and instead packed the house with plants. Yes, that's correct. All 2, 292 seats at the GranTeatre Liceu were occupied by green plants.

The idea was conceived by an artist Eugenio Ampudia and was broadcast live on the theater’s website. These lucky ficus trees, palms, and Swiss cheese plants — which were brought in by local nurseries (苗圃) — got the pleasure of hearing Puccini’s Crisantemi performed by the UceLi Quartet string musical group.

Ampudia hopes that his idea and the work will inspire people to think more deeply about their relationship with nature and the idea of sustainability. “We are at the end of an era and that means that we have to change certain patterns,” he shares. “We don’t live in the same world as 90 days ago, and this means we have to reflect on everything that we do.”

As plants can respond to different vibrations caused by music, they certainly weren’t a passive audience — even if they weren’t able to give applause. Now that the concert is over, each plant will be given to a different frontline healthcare worker who helped guide the country through its battle with the coronavirus.

The moving concert is a continuation of the Liceu’s mission to create a dialogue between music and the visual arts. Pictures and a video of the performance taken by Ampudia will now become part of La Caixacon temporary art collection.

1. What was the special part of the concert?
A.It had only 2, 292 seats.B.It made the world fall in horror.
C.It welcomed audience with plants to come.D.It gave plants opportunities to enjoy music.
2. What does the underlined word “conceived” mean in the second paragraph?
A.Hated.B.Enjoyed.C.Put forward.D.Turned down.
3. Which statement may Eugenio Ampudia agree with?
A.We didn’t do very well in dealing with nature.B.The healthcare workers were more important.
C.The plants should have the equal rights.D.We did everything in a wrong way.
4. In which column of a magazine can this text be read?
A.Daily Hero.B.Teens’ Life.
C.New Technology.D.Art Around the World.
