1 . Vietnam aims to solve the relations between economic development and cultural preservation. Vietnamese cultural departments and activists have tried to preserve the historical and cultural relics in the country.

Vietnam now has more than 40,000 historical relics. These relics of various forms and history are treasures for future generations.

However, hundreds of relics are severely damaged due to the negative influence of time, war and human activities. Head of Hanoi Relics Management Board, Nguyen Doan Tuan, says rescue work must preserve the relics’soul: “We cannot replace ruined construction with new materials. We must preserve its shape, size and style. We need to pay attention to every brick replaced so that it looks exactly like the original.”

Most relics have to rely on tourist fees for repair and rescue work. Director of Van Mieu Cultural and Science Center, Dang Kim Ngoc, says that the relics must be promoted widely to attract more visitors and bring in more income for repair and preservation: “We provide constant guide services for visitors so that they understand more about our relics. At the same time, a natural surrounding of the relic has been ensured, including the grass field and garden to improve its scenic value.”

The local government agreed that the relics must be turned to the community for shared efforts in the preservation work. Director of Vietnam Revolution Museum Dang Quoc Quan, said that the community must be guided in the preservation and protection, “The UNESCO aims to let local community take part in the preservation of relics. We have seen limitations in the preservation of relics, especially festival-related groups of buildings. This requires management and guidance by the government.”

Nguyen Thi Minh Ly from the Department of Heritage says the community should be guided in proper behaviors towards relics: “This will ensure the protection of cultural relics in later generations Creative restoration (修复) must be based on previous(先前的) values.”

Experts have called for a systematic(系统的)guidance by the state in local level preservation while promoting creative thinking in restoration for each relic.

2 . In the future, people may travel to Mars(火星)by water-powered spaceship! Today's spaceships are fine for getting things into space, but they are not so good at travelling long distances. These spaceships burn chemical fuels(燃料)and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a water-powered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. The idea is just in the planning stages now, but scientists think such a spaceship could be developed soon.

The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine(发动机).Regular engines push spaceships by burning fuel. The water engine will use steam, created by solar panels(太阳能板)that heat water to a high temperature. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars.

Today's spaceships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon will be able to.

One Us company has already developed a spaceship like this. These spaceships are made of a strong material. Two of them have already been sent up into space, using rockets and then later filed with air. “Balloon” spaceships could be very large and carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!

Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. Such savings naturally encourage continued research into balloon spaceships and water engines. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in a spaceship powered by water.

1. Which sentence best describes the main idea of the passage above?
A.The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine.
B.In the future, people may travel to Mars by water-powered spaceship.
C.One US company has already developed a spaceship like this.
D.Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be cost.
2. What do you think is omitted(省略)at the end of the underlined sentence?
A.use steam.
B.push spaceships.
C.heat water.
D.carry that much water
3. Besides growing food, what else might astronauts do with the rest of the water?
A.Take a hot bath.
B.Freeze dangerous things.
C.Blow up a balloon.
D.Change the surface of Mars.
4. On which website can we probably read this passage?
A.www. freedictionary. com/power.
B.www. mooc. cn/music.
C.www. chinadaily. com. cn/culture.
D.www. space. com/spaceflight.

4 . Trust me, you don’t want to get caught under a tsunami! Tsunamis are one of the world’s most powerful natural forces. They can cause huge amounts of damage.

But do you know exactly what a tsunami is? They are huge, powerful waves in the ocean that grow as they reach the shore. Most tsunamis are actually caused by earthquakes. An earthquake happens when a big piece of the Earth’s crust( 地 壳 ) suddenly moves. When the piece of ocean floor moves, it creates big holes. The water floods in to fill these holes. When the water moves that quickly, it creates a huge wave. This is how tsunamis are born!

Other natural disasters like landslides, volcanic eruptions, and glaciers breaking off can also cause tsunamis. Once the water starts moving because of the force of the disaster, large waves begin to spread. These waves can move very fast. They have been recorded at speeds from 400 up to 500 miles per hour! They can also move across very long distances.

At first, the waves of the tsunami may not seem that tall. That’s because when the waves travel through the deep parts of the ocean, the top of each wave is very short. But as that wave comes near to the coast, it grows in height. Remember, the tsunami travels quickly. If you are sitting on a beach, you may not see the wave coming at first. But when the wave arrives, it will be like a towering wall of water. Some waves are as tall as 100 feet high. The biggest tsunami ever recorded happened in 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska. The wave was over 1,720 feet tall, and it wiped out trees, vegetation, and everything else in its way.

As frightening as tsunamis can be, you don’t need to worry too much about them. They don’t happen that often. Only about two tsunamis happen every year. And it is said that serious, really damaging   tsunamis only happen about every fifteen years. So don’t worry.

1. Based on the information in the article, which natural disaster is not responsible for causing a tsunami?
A.tornadoB.volcanic eruptionC.earthquakeD.landslides
2. If a tsunami forms in the deep ocean, 2,000 miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, how long at least will it take the tsunami to reach the coast of Sri Lanka ?

6 . Some parents worry kids spend a lot of time looking at screens. But a new study argues against that unease parents may feel. “The danger is that they’re hearing a message that social media use is causing very serious and harmful problems like depression and anxiety. Candice Odgers, professor at the University of California, explained. And the idea is that if you shut off social media, which lots of kids use to connect with each other and find out information, you could in fact be making a situation worse. ”

Odgers and her colleagues looked at the screen-related behavior of 400 public-school students in North Carolina aged 10 to 14. The researchers found that—even not counting time doing schoolwork on screens—the kids spent between almost 5 hours to 7 hours per day on their devices. “Overall, what we find is no connection between the amount of time that young people spend online and mental health symptoms like depression, anxiety”. What they actually found was something jaw-dropping. Young people who sent more text messages reported better mental health. Odgers was not alone there. Journal Clinical Psychological Science recently announced, “people who use technology in the positive ways to stay connected off-line often, are more connected online as well and experiencing better mental health.”

So why are the fears about screen time? Odgers argues that the methodologies (方法论)for older studies may have led to false conclusions. “One of the methods that’s been done to date has been asking students to recall   “How often are you online?” and “ Have you ever felt depressed?” And the correlation between those two things has been used to spread a lot of fear about this connection between social media use and things like depression, 99. 5 percent of the reasons that kids differ in their depression is due to something other than the time they spend online though.”

Parents get a lot of advice, and some of it always seems to conflict. “The hope is that more parents will hear this message and relax and spend kind of less time worrying about smartphones and more time just talking to their kids.”

7 . "The music will not vanish," said Zhang Yadong,a famous Chinese music producer, in an interview with CGTN,expressing his strong belief in the power of today’s young musicians.

China’s new popular variety show "The Big Band,"debuted (首演)in May, is bringing some incredibly talented Chinese rock bands into the mainstream. As one of the judges, or "Super Fans", Zhang has grabbed the spotlight for his professional remarks on the show. Zhang, who started his career as a music producer in the early 1990s, has composed, recorded and produced several hit songs and albums for notable Chinese singers and bands.

Although Zhang admitted the importance of having a unique style and innovative (创新的)music, he emphasized the necessity of hard work. He said he respects talent, but he doesn’t think it is reliable. "Music is my profession, which cannot just rely on talent,"he said, "I have to work hard to keep myself sharp all the time."

According to a 2018 report by the Communication University of China, nearly 30 percent of Chinese musicians earn nothing from their music and 70 percent have to find part-time jobs. "The cost is quite high for today’s music producers, who need the support of expensive equipment," said Zhang. "It is convenient for users to download unauthorized content, but musicians may lose their motivation to create new content because their efforts seem to have gone in vain. Luckily, music copyrights have been strengthened as numerous policies to crack down on (打击)pirated music on the Internet have come into effect." Zhang agrees that these measures are helpful, and that record companies should not sign unequal contracts with musicians by taking advantage of their desire to be famous.

Decades have passed since Zhang came to Beijing to pursue his dream. Chinese popular music, meanwhile, has continued to transform and develop. Zhang said today’s young musicians are more stressed due to fiercer competition. However, he thinks they are hopeful and should not be underestimated. "I believe the changes are from quantity to quality," said Zhang. "I hope more people can write songs and fall in love with music." For more: click here.

8 . America is a nation built upon immigrants. There was time when everyone was a first-generation American, but centuries have passed since then and traditions have been established. No matter how “American” you might look, or how perfect your English is, there’s always something that’s going to give away your status as a foreigner. And that “thing” usually shows up on your plate.

1. Peanut butter and jelly was a joy you weren’t familiar with until adulthood. And if you’re smart, you’re making up for lost time by eating as many as you possibly can now.

9 . This is the story of three plastic bottles, empty and abandoned. Their journeys are about to diverge, more or less influencing the fate of our planet.

Bottle One, like hundreds of millions of tons of other plastic bottles, ends up in a landfill. This huge dump expands each day as more trash comes in and continues to take up space. As plastics sit there being pressed among layers of their junk, rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the chemicals it contains, and some of those are highly poisonous. Together they create harmful matter called leachate (沥滤液), which can move into groundwater, soil and streams, poisoning ecosystems and harming wildlife. It can take Bottle One 1,000 years to rot away.

Bottle Two's journey is strange. He floats on water that reaches a stream, a stream that flows into a river, and a river that reaches the ocean. After months lost at sea, he's slowly drawn where trash accumulates, a place known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Here the ocean's currents have trapped millions of pieces of plastic waste. There the water becomes a cloudy plastic soup. Some animals, like seabirds, get stuck in the mess. They, and others, mistake the brightly colored plastic things for food. Plastic makes them feel full when they're not, so they starve to death and pass the poisons from the plastic up the food chain. For example, it's eaten by fish, and the fish are eaten by us.

But Bottle Three is spared the cruel suffering of his brothers. A truck brings him to a plant where he and his companions are squeezed flat and pressed into a block. The blocks are cut and torn into tiny pieces, which are washed and melted, so they become the raw materials that can be used again. As if by magic, Bottle Three is now ready to be reborn as something completely new.

For this bit of plastic with such humble origins, suddenly the sky is the limit.

1. The underlined word “diverge” in paragraph 1 probably means

10 . UNICEF is calling on world leaders to reduce air pollution, saying it leads to the deaths of more children yearly than malaria and HIV/AIDS combined.

Around 600,000 children under age 5 die every year from diseases caused by or worsened by outdoor and indoor air pollution, especially in poor nations, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said in the introduction to a report titled “Clear the Air for Children.”

“Pollutants don't only harm children’s developing lungs, they can actually cross the blood brain barrier and permanently damage their developing brains, and, thus, their futures. No society can afford to ignore air pollution.”

UNICEF is asking world leaders to take four steps:

Reduce pollution by cutting back on fossil fuel burn and investing in energy efficiency.

Increase children's access to health care, including more immunization programs and information programs about pneumonia, a leading killer of children under 5.

Minimize children's exposure to air pollution by keeping schools away from factories and other pollution sources and using cleaner cookstoves in homes.

Improve monitoring of air pollution.

UNICEF said its air pollution report uses satellite imagery to show the global scope of the air pollution problem.

Around 2 billion children live in places with outdoor pollution exceeding World Health Organization air quality guidelines, the report said. Most of these children live in low and middle income countries.

That includes 620 million in South Asia, 520 million in Africa and 450 million in East Asia and the Pacific, UNICEF said.

The outdoor air pollution is most common in low-income, urban areas and is caused by vehicle emissions, heavy use of fossil fuels, dust and burning of waste, the report said.

The satellite map doesn't take into account the dangers of indoor pollution, primarily a problem in lower-income, rural areas where people use solid fuels like coal and wood for cooking and heating.

More than 1 billion children live in homes where solid fuels are used in this way, UNICEF said, For example, 81% of rural households, in India use this kind of fuel because it's cheap and Air pollution is an especially serious threat for children because their lungs and immune systems are developing, the report said.

Unborn children are also at risk. Studies show long-time exposure to high levels of dust matter is associated with high rates of fetal loss, premature births and lower birthrates.
