文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。讲述了新冠网课期间,教师乔恩特·李想办法让自己的化学课很有趣并帮助学生的故事。

1 . After schools moved online a year ago because of COVID-19, Jonte Lee, a teacher in Washington, DC. was determined to make his chemistry labs interactive and accessible. He figured the way to do so was to connect to the students on social platforms.

As a result, Lee has been livestreaming (网络直播) his lessons on Instagram and Facebook, inspiring students to follow along at home. Lee’s principal suggested he livestream a lab last April. “Our thought behind it was students know how to use Instagram and Facebook,” Lee said,

Realizing that most of his students would not have access to lab equipment when they had online lessons, Lee largely uses items that can be found in most kitchens. “And if there’s something a student doesn’t have, I don’t mind shipping it to the student,” he said.

Since beginning his lessons, Lee has heard from viewers across the country about how his classes have improved their experience of attending online school. One woman told Lee she had been worried about supervising her grandchildren’s classes at home. “She was like, ‘I know nothing about science, what’s going to happen?’ and then she came across my page,” said Lee. “Stories like that really touch my heart.”

Lee also has bought and delivered backpacks, school supplies, and even Amazon Fire tablets to each of his students. Lee poured his summer school teaching salary into the endeavor, calling is an “incredible experience”. Lee’s favorite lesson described how to make ice cream in three different ways, because of how engaged his students were even after the livestream ended.

Lee plans to continue posting videos even after students go back to school in person. “As a public school teacher, I have no intention to be famous or make money. I simply want to give back to all the taxpayers that fund my salary,” said Lee. “This allowed me to be a community teacher, and not a teacher that is bound by the four walls in my classroom.”

2 . Online education has grown fast over the past ten years. The explosion of technology has made teaching outside the traditional classroom possible for teachers and has provided learners with easy access to course materials. Its attractiveness, benefits, and challenges are addressed.

In April,2005,I was approached by a student who was interested in our doctoral program. However, the first question out of her mouth was, “Do you offer any online courses?”Later that day, as I was reading the conference program guide trying for interesting presentations, I noticed many workshops on web-based learning and online education. I later attended two of those workshops and met several professors from different universities who had either taught online courses for quite some time or who were discovering the best practice for teaching online. The experiences helped me realize at least to some extent the degree of growth in online education.

My responsibilities for the term included gaining more understanding of online education. Consequently, I made several attempts to enrich my knowledge of distance learning and online teaching. I consulted with my colleagues who were teaching online courses. This helped me recognize the importance of getting materials prepared even before the start of a term. I also learned that online courses may consume more time than regular classroom teaching. And I attended several workshops regarding online education and established a network with those who were involved in online programs at other universities. I will consider these people as my consultants as I begin to design my own online course. Also, I conducted a brief survey with 15 students and two faculty members who had taken or taught an online course before to understand their experience. Eventually I completed a literature review which gave me the foundation and the background of understanding the need for online education.

1. What benefits the development of online education?
A.Teachers’ good teaching ability.B.Lack of traditional classrooms.
C.Learners’ access to course materials.D.The rapid advance of economy.
2. Why did the author take a student for example?
A.To explain the growing trend of offline education.
B.To predict the future of the teaching career.
C.To show students’ love for the doctoral program.
D.To persuade learners of traditional education.
3. What caused the author to know more about online education?
A.The requirement of research.B.The professional responsibilities.
C.The appetite for knowledge.D.The colleagues’ encouragement.
4. What is the author’s attitude to online education?
A.Carefree.B.Doubtful.C.Supportive.D.Unwilling.

It used to be impossible to spend a long winter holiday. But now, though the winter vacation has been over, it’s still necessary     1     me to stay at home because of my illness. As people say, being left alone all day can drive a man crazy. A couple of weeks ago my parents invited a teacher     2    (give) me lessons online.

At first, I didn’t know how     3    (take) classes through the Internet. Now I have got used to my teacher and the situation. Before class I go online waiting for my teacher to come, for it is terribly rude     4     a student to come late. In each class, the teacher teaches me     5     to do and how to do it. After class I finish my homework.     6    (be) honest, although I study relatively hard, the result isn’t as good as in school. Yesterday I failed to pass the exam, which made my teacher very disappointed. However,     7    (attend) classes at home is a comfort for me.

5 . Professor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed an artificially intelligent teaching robot, Knowledge- Based Artificial Intelligence, to help handle the enormous number of student questions in the online class. This online course is a core requirement of Georgia Tech's online Master of Science in Computer Science program. Professor Goel already had eight teaching assistants, but that wasn't enough to deal with the overwhelming number of daily questions from students.

Many students drop out of online courses because of the lack of teaching support. When students feel isolated or confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to taper off. Professor Goel decided to do something to remedy this situation and his solution was to create a virtual assistant named Jill Watson, which is based on the IBM Watson platform.

Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn't too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all the 40, 000 questions that had ever been asked since the class was launched. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustments and sufficient time, Jill was able to answer the students' questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer.

The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn't tell it apart from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill's true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.

The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions posed by students on the online forum. The name Jill Watson will, of course, change to something else next semester. Professor Goel has a much rosier outlook on the future of artificial intelligence than, say, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates or Steve Wozniak.

1. What do we learn about Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence?
A.It is a robot that can answer students’ questions.
B.It is a course designed for students to learn online.
C.It is a high-tech device that reforms teaching.
D.It is a computer program that aids student learning.
2. What does the underlined phrase “taper off” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Grow dramatically.B.Increase sharply.C.Decrease gradually.D.Decline randomly.
3. How did the students feel about Jill Watson?
A.Incapable.B.Useful.C.Incredible.D.Universal.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.A robot gives an online course.
B.Artificial Intelligence will replace humans in online classes.
C.Virtual assistant is getting popular on campus.
D.Professor Goel of Georgia Tech applies a virtual teaching assistant.

6 . As the COVID-19 forces students to stay home, online learning has seen a sharp rise among students. Since late January, China has delayed starting the new school semester and encouraged students to study at home over safety concerns.

Besides what has been arranged by your schools as your study routine, what can you gain from online learning?    1

To successfully learn online, you need to dedicate a significant amount of your time, consistently attend the program, concentrate while studying and fully stick to your learning process, just as you would do for a regular course.

To stay on track with your online course, always keep in mind what you hope to complete by the end of it.    2     Estimate how much time each task will take to complete. Keep detailed notes and review them often.

A study plan is important to online learning.    3    Online learning needs to be well organized. Create a study calendar that will help you remember all the important dates like online exams or deadlines for your assignments.

When you feel yourself losing concentration, consider taking a short break or sopping for the night.    4

Taking online courses can be very convenient for many people.    5    It requires time management skills, self-discipline, willpower and motivation.

7 . Tips for Success in Online Learning

You may be one of the increasing number of students who is trying to achieve a college degree online. If so, follow these tips to help you be a successful online learner.

    1    .

Many students think that online classes require less work and are easier than traditional classes. In fact, online classes are designed to be just as exact and difficult as traditional courses. Be prepared to do at least six hours of work a week in an online course. Some weeks and some full classes will require far more than that, especially during the weeks of finals and midterms.

Pay attention to the course learning aims.

2    . Don't ignore them. Course aims are carefully planned and they are the foundations(基础) around which a well-designed course is built. Lectures, activities, written assignments, discussion boards, and tests-in fact, everything in a course-flow from the aims.

Be open to new ways of learning.

Students learn in different ways, and teachers often use kinds of strategies to meet different kinds of learning styles. Give videos and audio files a try, even if they seem different from what you're used to.     3    .Be open to it.

Join with all your heart.

A good posting would cause thought-provoking(引发深思的) questions related to the lesson's topic and would be many sentences.     4    .A well-designed discussion board is designed to produce thoughtful talking.

Make a regular schedule.

Log on(登录) to your course every day or at a minimum five days a week. Since courses are designed for students to do at least six hours of work each week, it’s not wise or effective to wait until the end of the week to do the coursework.     5    .It is just as you would in a traditional course.

A.Do not make a guess
B.Read and practice everything
C.Every course has learning aims
D.Be comfortable communicating through text
E.Manage your time and do some work each day
F.You will likely be given points for your postings
G.Well-designed courses use technology to improve learning

8 . Online courses have become popular in many countries. There are different kinds of online courses, but most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom.     2     In Singapore, eight schools have been chosen to try new ways of using technology in the classroom. The schools have tablets(平板电脑)and touchscreens instead of books and blackboards in the classrooms.     3     Through them, students can communicate with each other and work on projects together.

In South Korea, some students have been taught English by teachers in the Philippines and other countries since 2011. The teachers are in their home countries and are connected to the Korean classrooms via the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact with a robot in the classroom. The robot is controlled by the teacher.     4
