文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了在线学习的利弊。

1 . Online learning is now becoming very popular around the world. As we know, it allows people to learn at home and people can learn the courses from anywhere in the world. Anyone who wants to learn something can enroll (注册) into a good school offering online courses and complete their education. Besides being convenient, there is no age limit; one can take a course anytime and at any point in their career.

Online learning also means that people have more time for their own life while continuing their education. They are able to learn when it’s convenient for them, and in many cases the courses can be completed in less time than at a traditional school. People can go to work during the day and finish their homework at night. Parents can spend time with their children and then complete online classes when their children are at school or asleep. Since people don’t have to take part in any classroom activities, it does not do any harm to their lives. They can work and learn at any time of the day and at their own speed.

Many people find that online courses are less expensive than traditional ones. Classroom teaching is usually expensive and not suitable for a lot of people. Through online learning, one can save a lot. People don’t have to spend more money on traveling, staying in hotels or eating in restaurants. Online courses are a good choice for those who are short of money but want to learn something and improve themselves. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students learning online have not only saved a lot of money but also performed better than those learning in traditional schools.

Of course, online learning requires a regimented lifestyle and the ability to learn on one’s own. For people who are not strict with themselves, online learning can be a real challenge. For busy people who take online classes, time management can be a challenge. They have to decide for themselves when to work on class tasks and how long they will need in order to finish the work. So, people must think about all of these things before making a choice.

1. In the author’s opinion, online learning ________.
A.is easy to get for anyoneB.should be made fun
C.is a good choice for anyoneD.may disappear in the near future
2. The purpose of the last paragraph is to show ________.
A.how to find time to learnB.the future of online learning
C.how to make use of online learningD.the problems of online learning
3. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Online learning is going to replace traditional schools.

5 . Professor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed an artificially intelligent teaching assistant to help handle the enormous number of student questions in the online class, Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence. This online course is a core requirement of Georgia Tech’s online Master of Science in Computer Science program. Professor Goel already had eight teaching assistants, but that wasn’t enough to deal with the overwhelming number of daily questions from students.

Many students drop out of online courses because of the lack of teaching support. When students feel isolated or confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to fade. Professor Goel decided to do something to remedy (改进) his situation and his solution was to create a virtual assistant named Jill Watson, which is based on the IBM Watson platform.

Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn’t too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all the 40,000 questions that had ever been asked since the class was launched. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustments and sufficient time, Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn’t tell it apart from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.

The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions posed by students on the online forum. The name Jill Watson will, of course, change to something else next semester. Professor Goel has a much rosier outlook on the future of artificial intelligence than, say, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates or Steve Wozniak.

1. What do we learn about Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence?
A.It is a robot that can answer students’ questions.
B.It is a course designed for students to learn online.
C.It is a high-tech device that revolutionizes teaching.
D.It is a computer program that aids student learning.
2. What problem did Professor Goel meet with?
A.His students were unsatisfied with the assistants.
B.His course was too difficult for the students.
C.Students’ questions were too many to handle.
D.Too many students dropped out of his course.
3. What do we learn about Jill Watson?
A.She turned out to be a great success.
B.She got along pretty well with students.
C.She was unwelcome to students at first.
D.She was released online as an experiment.
4. How did the students feel about Jill Watson?
A.They thought she was a bit too artificial.
B.They found her not as capable as expected.
C.They could not but admire her knowledge.
D.They could not tell her from a real person.
5. What does Professor Goel plan to do next with Jill Watson?
A.Launch different versions of her online.
B.Feed her with new questions and answers.
C.Assign her to answer more of students’ questions.
D.Encourage students to interact with her more freely.
6. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.A robot gives an online course.
B.Virtual assistant is getting popular in school.
C.Robots will replace humans in online classes.

Education officials and industry experts are debating the future of online learning. The discussion is important because recently hundreds of universities in the United States have moved classes online because of the     1     of the new coronavirus.

For Asha Choksi, the rise of internet-based or online study programs has led to major improvements in higher education.

“What it’s done is, it’s actually given a lot more power to students in terms of how, when and where they learn,” the head of research for Pearson Education told VOA. Her company is     2     online learning programs.

Colleges and universities worldwide have been looking for ways to provide satisfactory education off campus and outside of     3     business hours. The decision by many schools in the U. S. to suspend in-person classes during the recent coronavirus crisis has shown how important online teaching can be. And demand for such programs is increasing.

The financial advising company Tyton Partners     4     the online program management industry at over $1.5 billion in 2015.

Choksi, however, argues that her company is     5     a path to higher education for people who might not have been able to get a degree otherwise.

Pearson Education is one of a growing number of companies that     6     with schools to create online study aids and full degree programs. Classes meet online through video     7    . In this way, students are able to     8     with each other and their professors even when they are far away from school.

Online learning also permits older students, who work, full-time and support families, to work on their education in their free time. It can be helpful for people who might have difficulty coming to a college campus, such as disabled students or those who live far from any college or university.

However, recent research suggests the majority of college students and professors prefer in-person instruction. In addition, some experts are     9     that companies in charge of online learning programs are not clear about the policies they have with the schools they serve.

Last year, the EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research published two opinion studies on online higher education programs. Researchers asked over 40,000 American undergraduate students and 9,500 professors what they thought about these programs. In both groups, as least 70 percent of people said they prefer in-person     10    .

10 . According to University World News, there are around 200 million students who are affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, great minds did not let the hours go for nothing. As online education was already familiar, chances of establishing the mainstream policy of conducting classes through online increased greatly.

A huge response from all over the world is seen. Many universities and schools started conducting their classes through Ding Talk TV, CCTalk or other conferencing portals (入口). It is known that this procedure will not last if situation becomes stable again as what is now going on is only a “Better than nothing” option, but the appeal and impact of “E-Learning” will definitely remain.

Undoubtedly the online education will make a huge impact on the lifestyle and time consumption of the people as life will become even faster and more comfortable than now. Also the transportation problem of the country will be solved as students will be able to conduct the classes from home. More precisely, wastage of time will be removed completely, which would help the students to become more concentrated and hardworking. Another major problem is the accommodation problem which will be settled completely as anybody can access the classes sitting in their own home.

However this E-Learning method may result in some possible problems in future. Even for the time being, though the credit (学分) hours are counted and the students are graded on the basis of online exams, some courses and subjects should be left out for later to be conducted physically. For example, subjects which do not require practical experiments or are computer related, such as literature, history, law, computer science, mathematics, etc. are completely okay to be conducted in both the classroom and E-Learning. Whereas, chemistry, biology, agricultural science, all the medical departments, etc. or in short, whatever the course is, if that requires practical application, practice and fieldwork, shouldn’t be conducted in the virtual class.

Therefore, all the courses which require lab work or practical application, should be separated and designed as a “Lab Year” and conducted those classes physically when situation becomes normal. Even some of the theoretical courses, such as law, journalism, should have a few courses conducted later for the students’ own benefit in future. In other words, there should be a balanced way of handling the situation.

1. According to the passage, E-Learning is very likely to ________.
A.settle the transportation problemB.help students find a house to live in
C.cause students to waste more timeD.make people’s life less comfortable
2. Which of the following might be the possible problem of online education?
A.Students can’t be graded fairly based on online exams.
B.Some courses requiring practice can’t be conducted physically.
C.Computer Science and history have to be conducted online.
D.Some subjects should be left out for later to be conducted online.
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Online education will replace the traditional one.
B.The effects of “E-Learning” exist for the time being.
C.The theoretical courses needn’t be conducted physically.
D.Traditional Education will still have a place in the future.
4. What might be the best title of the passage?
A.Online Education: Impact and Practice
B.Online Education: Benefits and Problems
C.Online Education: Problems and Solutions
D.Online Education: Opportunity and Possibility
